ECU BOARD MEETING
The European Chess Union Board meeting was held in Iasi, Romania from 19 22 July 2011. The meeting was very constructive and successful organised by the Romanian Chess Federation and Iasi Chess Association.

MOST IMPORTANT DECISION MADE BY THE ECU BOARD :
The report on the activities between the two meetings was adopted
The Board made a decision on signing the contract with Convekta Company concerning the mutual organization of chess tournaments on the internet
The report on the work of the Commissions for Sofia Rule, Dress Code and Copyright on the use of chess games from the ECU competitions created by President Danailov was adopted
Members of the working group were appointed 1. Dirk de Ridder, Almog Burstein, Theodoros Tsorbatzoglou. They will prepare the proposal on the changes of the ECU Tournament Rules and Regulations until the next Board meeting

POLAND AND ROMANIA WON THE EUROPEAN YOUTH TEAM CHAMPIONSHIP-U 18’2011
Poland and Romania won the European Youth Team Championship U 18. The event, organized by the European Chess Union, Romanian Chess Federation and Municipality of Iasi, was held in the town of Iasi, Romania on July 14 22, 2011.

In the Open section of the tournament the final ranking is the following: Poland, Turkey, Romania 1, Hungary, Croatia, Romania 2, Slovenia, Bulgaria, Germany, Israel, Romania 3, Moldova. The team composition of the new European Champions was: IM Marcel Kanarek, FM Zbigniew Strzemiecki, FM Daniel Sadzikowski and Pawel Weichhold.
In the girls section of the tournament the final ranking is the following: Romania 1, Hungary 1, Hungary 2, Bulgaria, Romania 2, Poland, Slovenia, Romania 3. The team composition of the new European Champions was: WIM Irina Bulmaga and WFM Mihaela Veronica Foisor.

All Board members of the European Chess Union were present at the closing ceremony of the Championship. The first prize to the champions of Poland was given by Mr. Silvio Danailov, President of ECU. Mr. Danailov and the Board members met also with the Mayor of Iasi, Mr. Gheorghe Nichita.

FM GEORGE FROEWIS AND IM EVA MOSER WON THE AUSTRIAN STATE CHESS CHAMPIONSHIPS’2011
21 year old FM Georg Frowis won the Austrian Chess Championship’2011with final result of 7.5 points. The silver took Andreas Diermair with 7 points, the bronze is for Georg Danner, who finished with 6.5 points. In women's section, IM Eva Moser defends her title with 8 points final result. With the same points finshed the tournament the silver holder WIM Anna Christina Kopinits. The third place is for Barbara Schink 6.5 points.
The Austrian State Chess Championships was held on July 23 31, 2011 in Linz.

IM FILIP PANCEVSKI WON THE OPEN CHESS CHAMPIONSHIP OF FYR OF MACEDONIA’2011
IM Filip Pancevski won the Open Chess Championship of FYR of Macedonia’2011 with final result of 7.5 points. The silver took the Bulgarian IM Sasho Nikolov, who finished with 6.5 points. On the shared third place with 6 points finished FM Riste Menkinoski, IM Orce Dancevski and GM Vlatko Bogdanovski.
The Championship was held on July 16 24, 2011 in Struga and organized by the Chess Federation of FYR of Macedonia and Alkaloid.

TURKISH YOUTH CHESS CHAMPIONSHIPS’2011
The Turkish Youth Chess Championships’ 2011 took place on July 22 28, 2011 in the capital Istanbul. The tournaments were played for ages U13 U18 (boys and girls) in 7 rounds, according to the Swiss system.
The full scale of the Championships, organized by the Turkish Chess Federation, was divided in two different events U8 U12 (boys and girls) and U13 U18 (boys and girls). More than 1000 participants played in the first part of the Championships which was held on February in Kemer, Antaliya. In U13 U18 part of the Championships participated 380 chess players.

VLADIMIR KRAMNIK WON THE 39 TH SPARKASSEN CHESS MEETING – DORTMUND
GM Vladimir Kramnik won the 39 th Sparkassen Chess Meeting. This is his 10 th title in the tournament – a record that will probably never be broken.
The 39 th Sparkassen Chess Meeting was held on July 21 31, 2011 in the City Theater of Dortmund, Germany. This year in the event participated the following chess players: Vladimir Kramnik, Hikaru Nakamura, Ruslan Ponomariov, Anish Giri, Le Quang Liem and Georg Meier. For the second time in the tournament the players were not allowed to offer a draw during the game.

MAGNUS KARLSEN WON THE 44 TH BIEL CHESS FESTIVAL
GM Magnus Karlsen won the 44 th Biel Chess Festival with final result of 7 points. Second is GM Alexander Morozevich on a half point distance to the winner. Third finished GM Maxime Vachier Lagrave with 5 points.

The tournament was held on July 16 29, 2011 in Biel, Switzerland. The rate of play was 2 hours for 40 moves+1 hour 20 moves+15 minutes to the end of the game+30 seconds increment, starting from move 61.

EUROPEAN AMATEURS CHAMPIONSHIPS’2011
The International Chess and Games Festival Czech Open’2011 took place on July 14 31, 2011 in Pardubice, Czech Republic. The festival included 25 different tournaments, as in the main 5 chess events participated 1193 players from 40 countries.
OPEN A
The Grandmaster Open A tournament was played in 9 rounds under the Swiss system rules. The rate of play was 2x 1,5 h/40 + 30 min + 30 s/move, waiting time in case of late coming was 1 h.
The name of the winner is GM Dmitry Kononenko from Ukraine, who finished the tournament with result of 7.5 points. On a half point distance from the ranking leader finished four GMs: Konstantine Shanava (Georgia), Viacheslav Zakhartsov (Russia), Hannes Stefansson (Iceland) and Zoran Jovanovic (Croatia).

THE CHESS OSCAR’2010 GOES TO MAGNUS KARLSEN
GM Magnus Karlsen won for a second time the Chess Oscar. His first prize was in 2009. The prize is given by the Russian Chess Magazine 64 as a result of the votes of chess journalists from 36 countries. The Chess Oscar is the special award for the best chess player of the year.
The other holders of the prize are: Garry Kasparov – 1995, 1996, 1999, 2001 and 2002; Vishwanathan Anand – 1997, 1998, 2003, 2004, 2007 and 2008; Vladimir Kramnik – 2000 and 2006; Veselin Topalov – 2005.
