Ivanchuk scored amazing 13 points out of 14, with a rating performance of 3059 points! He started with 9 out of 9, which is a truly remarkable start, and finally finished with 12 wins and only two draws.

    NEWSLETTER 59 (January 16, 2012) 1ST EUROPEAN RAPID & BLITZ CLUB CUP-OPEN AND WOMEN- ROMANIA’2012 The 1st European Rapid & Blitz Club Cup will take place on August 8th -12th, 2012 in Bucharest, Romania. GENERAL REGULATIONS 1. Participation The valid regulations to be followed are the "ECU Tournament Rules" approved by the General Assembly of the European Chess Union. According to the Rules for the European Club Cup, participation is open to every club who has the approval of its own national federation. 2. Organizing fees 150 Euro per team for rapid competition 100 Euro per team for blitz competition 3. Application, registration 3.1. Every federation who intends to participate with one or more club teams must inform the organizing committee before 1st of July 2012, of its acceptance of the invitation specifying the name of the teams. 3.2. Entry forms must be completed and returned to the Tournament office not later than the 1st of July, 2012, by fax at +40213174700 or mail stamped by the Federation, or by official e-mail to [email protected]. This date is the registration deadline. The basic team composition must be written in the entry form. 3.3. The complete registration form must include first name/s, surname/s, ID number, FIDE or/and National title, and passport number of each player and captain. It must also include the name and telephone/e-mail/fax number of the Chief of Delegation (if any), the person in charge of every Club and bank transfer details. © Europechess.net Page 1 3.4.

I first met Valentin Kirillov shortly after I began playing chess. His job was titled “state coach”, making him responsible for selecting players for the Latvian national teams, and he was acutely aware of all chess activities in the country. He quickly noticed me, partly because he knew my father from junior competitions. In January 1984, at the tender age of eleven years old, I joined Alexander Shabalov and Vidvuds Ozolins in the Soviet Under 18 Championship held in distant Kirovabad (now Ganja) in Azerbaijan. Kirillov was the head of the Latvian delegation, and I had no personal coach at the time. My openings were awful, my opponents were much older and far more experienced, and so no wonder I started out with 0.5 out of 5.

The 18th edition of one of the biggest tournaments in the ECU calendar took place in the Sports Palace in Minsk, with the participation of 400 players, who competed for the 1 NL JUNE 2017 EUROPEAN CHESS UNION prestigious title of the European Chess Champion and one of the 22 seats – tickets to the World Chess Cup 2018. The winner became Grandmaster Maxim Matlakov (RUS, 2714) who triumphed with 8.5 points. The Russian scored the same points as Baadur Jobava (GEO, 2713) and Vladimir Fedoseev (RUS, 2690), but thanks to better tiebreak criteria he became the new European Chess Champion, while the other two won silver and bronze respectively. The prize fund of 100 000 EUR, attracted the majority of the best European players including and many women players as well. The best ranked women players were WGM Olga Girya (RUS, 2476) and IM Elisabeth Paehtz (GER, 2474) with 6.5 points, and WGM Aleksandra Goryachkina (RUS, 2470) with 6 points. The best senior player was GM Zurab Sturua (GEO, 2555), the 2014 World and 2015 European Senior Chess Champion. The best players U18 were IM Haik M. Martirosyan (ARM, 2516), IM Aram Hakobyan (ARM, 2449), IM Kirill Shevchenko (UKR, 2491) and IM Alexey Sarana (RUS, 2472), all with 7 points.

    PCA – Super Classic (1995) Umbrella brand for an invitational series in different cities, organized by the PCA, there was no pre- qualification tournament whatsoever; the concept is comparable with the ‘Grand Chess Tour’ today Riga (Tal Memorial) // Novgorod // Horgen (CS-Masters) In 1995, a three tournament series, organized by the PCA was titled the ‘Super Classic", covering the following so-called supertournaments (installing a fairly new terminus): Tal Memorial at Riga, Novgorod, Russia, and the Crédit Suisse Masters at Horgen near Zürich. Note: The tournaments of Riga and Novgorod have been played before, Horgen just after the PCA World Chess Champion match between Kasparov and Anand, held in New York 1995. The invited PCA Super Classic players were (ordered by their PCA rating at that time): Garry Kasparov Vassily Ivanchuk Vladimir Kramnik Artur Jussupow Jaan Ehlvest Rafael Vaganian Boris Gulko Nigel Short Jan Timman and Vishwanathan Anand at Riga and Veselin Topalov, replacing Anand at Novgorod and Joël Lautier, replacing Anand at Horgen Alexei Shirov withdrew at Riga due to a dispute with the Latvian Federation plus Edvins Kengis with wildcard at Riga (thus eleven participants) plus Viktor Korchnoi with wildcard (!) at Horgen (thus eleven participants) Anand dropped out of Novgorod and was replaced by Veselin Topalov. At Horgen, it was Joël Lautier who played instead of Anand who declined again. Kengis and Korchnoi were added to represent the hosting nation of Latvia at Riga and of Switzerland at Horgen, respectively. Nine of the invited players who started the PCA series finished it. Overall winner: Kasparov. The 1995 Tal Memorial at Riga remained a one-off event (the Tal Memorial series starting in 2006 in Moscow are independent), the Crédit Suisse Masters at Horgen (with A & B-group) collapsed after the two editions in 1994 and in 1995, Novgorod lasted for four editions from 1994 to 1997.

    GM Alexsandr Lenderman Tops the 43rd Eastern Open by Tom Beckman Tournament Results: 170 players came ready to play in the 5-section, 7-round Eastern Open, held in Bethesda MD over December 27-30, 2016. GM Alexsandr Lenderman scored 6½ points out of 7, drawing only with GM Alexander Shabalov. The decisive game came in round 5 when GM Lenderman downed GM Sergey Erenburg (last year's winner) to take a ½-point lead over the field, which he did not relinquish. GM Alexander Shabalov took clear 2nd with 6 points. The number of special prizes were increased in the 3 categories: Best Played Game/Best Fighting Spirit, Brilliancy, and Opening Innovation. In addition to the main tournament, a one-day Scholastic Tournament drew 40 players in 3 sections. The Winner's Perspective: GM Aleksandr Lenderman, one of four GMs who competed in the event, won clear first place in the open section for the third time and said he considers the Eastern his “lucky tournament.” “I don’t win clear first very often but somehow this is just my lucky tournament,” said Lenderman, who also won clear first place at the Eastern back in 2009 and 2010. Aleks said he enjoys playing in the Eastern because he has several good friends in the area, including tournament organizer Tom Beckman, GM Larry Kaufman, and one of his students, Carla Naylor.
