Chapter 1 ALMOST THE BEST DAY OF MY LIFE ‘It was brilliant to see Paul Weller coming on as substitute against Scunthorpe. His courage and determination provide an example to us all. I hadn’t realised just how serious his operation had been until I read a piece about him in the local rag. I will spare you the details. Suffice it to say this illness is a pig. It often greatly inconveniences people living quite sedentary lives. To have overcome this disability and to have returned to life as a professional sportsman is an incredible achievement. I’m rooting for you Paul along with everyone else.’ A BURNLEY FAN, Tim Quelch, wrote that in a fanzine way back in October 1999 .

Editor Notes Alex Everson Welcome to the the first ever online only issue of a new Reading fanzine, The Digestive. This fanzine is here to offer you some light hearted, some deeper, and some maybe downright silly pieces of content for you to get stuck into about our club. In conjunction with @ElmParkRoyals, we are looking to breed a new fan voice, and give the everyday fan the oppurtunity to write about that long forgotten match, their favourite player who everyone else disliked, or perhaps delve into expected goals models at long last. We are looking to try and grow this fanzine from a small acorn in this, the first issue into something regular, with contributors coming from you! The fans, and readers of this zine. If writing about Reading is something you've ever wanted to do, this is your outlet to let people know your thoughts and feelings. This issue comes during our first International break of the season - before a long distance trip to Middlesbrough in mid September. Hopefully, by the time we next connect - Reading will have picked up more points and be moving up the table. Until then, please enjoy the fanzine, and if you are interested in writing, designing covers, or want to just pass a comment, please send @ElmParkRoyals a tweet. Editor Notes Alex Everson The Digestive returns after a turbulent month of results for Reading which saw us pick up just 2 league wins during February. However with a gap over the relegation zone remaining fairly consistent throughout (Outside of the never to be spoken of again Wigan match), it seems that the league season is slowly drawing to a conclusion. With just 10 games to go, it appears that the aim now will be to finish as high up the table as we can, with relegation looking like a threat which the door can now be shut on. In this issue, we take a look at previous times we've competed in round 5 of the FA cup with new writer, Jamie Butler. We also get a look into the life of supporting Reading from literally from the other side of the world as Richard Crewdson gives us his experiences of supporting the Royals from Adelaide. We also remember former loan players with Rob Saunders later in this issue. We also have your usual preview and review articles to pore over, along with a look back at our recent midweek form over the past few seasons. We also continue the memorable minute series with Cabin__13. Finally an article about a Reading legend as featured on our cover this month from Paul as he discusses the blur that was, Michael Gilkes. With the season slowly coming to a long, drawn out close, hopefully a good result in the upcoming FA cup game will give our season an extension - however I think I speak for the majority of us in saying, at least it shouldn't be going to the last day this time.
