Value All Care, Value Every Family familyvaluesatwork.org Value All Care, Value Every Family More and more people of all political persuasions acknowledge that paid leave is an issue whose time has come. As we enter the “not if but when” stage of creating public policy, we need to make sure the program values all care and values every family. Parents urgently need paid time to welcome a new child into their homes. But more than three-quarters of those who take unpaid leave under the Family and Medical Leave Act do so to care for a loved one or for their own serious illness. Our paid leave program cannot leave them out. The stories in this booklet come from people across the country. Each of them faced an unexpected injury or illness, like most of us do at some point. And like us, they just want to take care of themselves and their loved ones without falling off an economic cliff. It would be very difficult to cure or prevent all the ailments described in this booklet. Department of Educational Studies The University of British Columbia Vancouver, Canada Date: y 11 ABSTRACT HIS STUDY IS A CRITICAL ANALYSIS OF THE DISCOURSE ON CHILDHOOD RESILIENCE and the politics of teaching resilience to "kids at risk" in inner-city schools. Resiliency research is Trooted in the early psychology studies of children's coping and competence. By the 1970s, researchers were observing children who appeared invulnerable to traumatic events. These children were later described as resilient, and resilience was defined as bouncing back from adversity. Today, resilience has become an ideological code for social conformity and academic achievement. My analysis problematizes "childhood resilience" and "teaching resilience" and examines two dangerous shifts in the mainstream resiliency research over the past several decades. -

Narratives and the Economics of the Family Robert Akerlof & Luis Rayo (This paper also appears as CAGE Discussion Paper No: 503) August 2020 No: 1299 Warwick Economics Research Papers ISSN 2059-4283 (online) ISSN 0083-7350 (print) Narratives and the Economics of the Family∗ Robert Akerlof† Luis Rayo‡ August 6, 2020 Abstract We augment Becker’s classic model of the family by assuming that, in addition to caring about consumption, the family wishes to further a subjective story, or narrative, that captures its deeply held values. Our focus is on two stories that in many ways are polar opposites. The first one—the protector narrative—gives rise to a type of traditional family where gender roles are distinct, men and women are pushed towards “separate spheres,” and men are expected to be tough and authoritarian. The second one—the fulfillment narrative—gives rise to a type of modern family where roles are less distinct, family members have greater latitude in their decisions, and marriages are based to a greater extent on romantic love. We derive a rich bundle of behaviors associated with each story, and using survey data, we show that our findings are consistent with a variety of empirical patterns. The leaders I followed push themselves and those around them to work towards surmounting at least a small portion of the barriers faced by the individuals they have dedicated significant amounts of their lives to serving. They gave their time, insight, and support generously, allowing me a window into the absolutely vital work they do in their communities. I do not take such gifts lightly, as those working in the non-profit sector face ever-increasing demands and constraints on their time and resources. Despite these limitations, all made time for my incessant questioning and prying observation, and for that I am eternally grateful. Many of my relationships with these individuals grew into close and cherished friendships that will extend far beyond the reach of my dissertation research. Obviously, I cannot list their names, but those of them with time and interest enough to read the acknowledgments page will know exactly to whom I’m referring. As well, the clients and participants in the programs I followed deserve a good amount of my gratitude. This working paper examines how sociological constructions of family and intimate relations have shifted over the years, exploring how particular bodies of literature have documented and shaped understandings of social connectedness. It will be argued that there are three major sociological perspectives on contemporary personal relations, with theorists emphasising breakdown, democratisation or continuity. Having reviewed the available research and outlined each perspective, this paper moves on to contextualise the three different interpretations, relating them to current debates around the concept of social capital. As Lynn Jamieson (1998) notes, the word ‘intimacy’ has come to replace what would previously have been termed ‘primary relationships’, signifying a new focus on the quality as opposed to the structure of such relationships. Within the field of sociology the term intimacy has taken on a particular significance, describing a theoretical stance that has emerged and colonised topics of interest that were previously viewed from the perspectives of family or community studies. -

SCIENTIA MORALITAS CONFERENCE PROCEEDINGS DOI: 10.5281/zenodo.4385020 The Construction of the Family Ethic in Turkey Esra Özdil Gümüş PhD Candidate, Boğaziçi University, Turkey, [email protected] ABSTRACT: The Republic of Turkey in 1923, is established on the foundations of secularism and modernity. The newly established state, which turned its face to the West by rejecting the legacy of the Ottoman Empire, carried out a modern nation building project with the imagination of a new nation, family and citizenship. Through family planning policies, the modern nuclear family was supported as a disengagement from the Ottoman traditional society. Due to secularist policies, beliefs, morals, values, ethics were accepted as individualistic matters and pushed to private sphere. This family-oriented modernization and ideal of national family required the construction of a new citizen woman who incurred the responsibility of raising new patriot generations devoted to principles of the reformist state. However, this perception of family and woman began to change in the last few decades especially with the neoconservative and neoliberal policies adopted by the rule of the Justice and Development Party (JDP). In accordance with the earlier governments, the family preserved its privileged position, however, with a new assignment on family which instrumentalizes ethics, morals and beliefs in the public sphere compatible with its policies. The birth control policies have come to an end and the care giving services assigned to families instead of public service, which eventually requires a renovation of duties and responsibilities of the family and women. This paper intends to analyze the mobilization of beliefs, morals and ethics for the sake of construction of the social order.
