If we could but taste something of what this implies, we would forever magnify the unspeakable grace which surpasses all human understanding. During this time, we celebrate the grace that is ours in Christ Jesus. Let our worship be joyous as we contemplate the forgiveness of sin and the restoration of the relationship between ourselves and the God who made us. We long for more grace.     Book of Acts Study, Part 53 – Wednesday, February 10, 2021 (COVID 19 Livestream #47) The Book of Acts fills in between the Gospel of John and the Book of Romans. Not only in the order in which the Books of the Bible are listed, but chronologically. So the Book of Acts is very important, it fills in important history of the propagation of the early church. It documents the spread of the Gospel into the Gentile world. Last week, we looked at the setting of the Book of Acts. We looked at the author Luke, and learned a little about him. But we also established the themes for the Book of Acts that we will be rallying around for our church, at such a time as this. Two main themes of the Book of Acts we will be emphasizing: 1. Humanly speaking, the early Christians had nothing going for them. The church was new, with unproven leaders. They weren’t educated, they had no money, no modern means for spreading the gospel. They faced incredible opposition and enormous obstacles. Yet they were empowered by the Holy Spirit to do the impossible and bring a simple salvation message to an unsaved world. If this isn’t encouraging for us here at Crossover, I don’t know what is. God doesn’t call the qualified, He qualifies the called. What is going to happen here at Crossover will be a clear work of the Holy Spirit and it will be done through common broken people, amen?! 2. Persecution was meant to squash Christianity.

    TO GOD BE THE GLORY Acts 12:20-25 Acts 12;20-25 As one who grew up in the church, there was, fairly early on, a familiarity with the Bible and with the stories of the Bible. This included those sections that were • captivating because their excitement (stories like the plagues that came upon the Egyptians, David's slaying of Goliath or Joshua and the battle of Jericho) • seductive because of their content (sections of the Bible like the Song of Songs, the story of David and Bathsheba, or the story of Amnon and Tamar), or • intriguing because of what took place (the miracles of Jesus, Lazarus being raised from the dead (especially with the King James Version line, "Lord, by this time he stinketh: for he hath been dead four days" (John 11:39)), or Eutychus' falling asleep during Paul's preaching and then falling out the second story window). Well, today's text before us here in Acts chapter 12 falls into this third category. "And he was eaten by worms." I guess, even as a child, I knew that that is what inevitably happens to dead bodies that are buried in the ground. I had seen worms and bugs of all sorts making their way through animals that had been hit by cars (what we now call "roadkill" though, as a child, I don't recall that term being used at the time). So I had seen that. And so the idea that worms and all kinds of small insects would one day be feeding on the flesh of the bodies of those who die…I understood that.

So the Twelve called a meeting of all the believers. They said, “We apostles should spend our time teaching the word of God, not running a food program. And so, brothers, select seven men who are well respected and are full of the Spirit and wisdom. We will give them this responsi- bility. Then we apostles can spend our time in prayer and teaching the word.” Everyone liked this idea, and they chose the following: Stephen (a man full of faith and the Holy Spirit), Philip, Procorus, Nicanor, Timon, Par- menas, and Nicolas of Antioch (an earlier convert to the Jewish faith). These seven were presented to the apostles, who prayed for them as they laid their hands on them. So God’s message continued to spread. Te number of believers greatly increased in Jerusalem, and many of the Jewish priests were converted, too. Stephen, a man full of God’s grace and power, performed amazing mir- acles and signs among the people.     1 Acts 12:20-25, No. 27 “Reading the Signs” April 3, 2016 The Rev. Dr. Robert S. Rayburn We’ve been away from Acts for several Sunday mornings and return to it at a paragraph that relates an incident that has, at first glance, little obvious connection to the main drift of the narrative to this point. It is not about what the Christians were doing to spread the gospel or how they were enduring persecution, the subjects of the previous paragraphs. But, as will become clear, the account of Herod’s death, in a very important and illuminating way, completes the narrative begun in 12:1. Herod had arrested and executed James and had also arrested Peter. Now we find out what happened to Herod himself. Indeed, the previous sentence, v. 19, connects what follows to what had gone before. It tells us what Herod had done when unable to locate Peter and re-arrest him. The scene has changed from Jerusalem to Caesarea. Text Comment v.20 For some reason Herod had fallen out with the citizens of the two Phoenician coastal cities north of Caesarea, Tyre and Sidon. But those cities depended on Galilean corn for their food supply and so realized that they needed to patch things up with the king. So, no doubt with a bribe, they secured the help of Blastus, one of Herod’s advisors, to represent them as they sought to regain the favor of the king and so the shipment of grain. v.21 On the formal occasion when their case was to be heard and Blastus was to speak on their behalf, Herod – not a man to take the high ground – harangued them with a speech.

On an appointed day Herod put on his royal robes, took his seat upon the throne, and delivered an oration to them. And the people were shouting, “The voice of a god, and not of a man!” Immediately an angel of the Lord struck him down, because he did not give God the glory (ὧν οὐκ ἔδωκεν τὴν δόξαν τῷ θεῷ), and he was eaten by worms and breathed his last. But the word of God increased and multiplied. (Ὁ δὲ λόγος τοῦ ⸀θεοῦ ηὔξανεν καὶ ἐπληθύνετο.) And Barnabas and Saul returned from Jerusalem when they had completed their service, bringing with them John, whose other name was Mark. Introduction In a sense one might describe the whole Christian life as the work of giving God glory, of giving God the credit. Doing so is not automatic. We do not, even as Christians, automatically honor the Lord, give Him credit, defer to His wishes and seek the promotion of His name. We sing like we do so; we sometimes advertise ourselves that way; commercials on Christian radio make it sound that way—but we do not automatically honor the Lord.
