TURANDOT Cast Biographies Soprano Martina Serafin (Turandot) made her San Francisco Opera debut as the Marshallin in Der Rosenkavalier in 2007. Born in Vienna, she studied at the Vienna Conservatory and between 1995 and 2000 she was a member of the ensemble at Graz Opera. Guest appearances soon led her to the world´s premier opera stages, including at the Vienna State Opera where she has been a regular performer since 2005. Serafin´s repertoire includes the role of Lisa in Pique Dame, Sieglinde in Die Walküre, Elisabeth in Tannhäuser, the title role of Manon Lescaut, Lady Macbeth in Macbeth, Maddalena in Andrea Chénier, and Donna Elvira in Don Giovanni. Upcoming engagements include Elsa von Brabant in Lohengrin at the Opéra National de Paris and Abigaille in Nabucco at Milan’s Teatro alla Scala. Dramatic soprano Nina Stemme (Turandot) made her San Francisco Opera debut in 2004 as Senta in Der Fliegende Holländer, and has since returned to the Company in acclaimed performances as Brünnhilde in 2010’s Die Walküre and in 2011’s Ring cycle. Since her 1989 professional debut as Cherubino in Cortona, Italy, Stemme’s repertoire has included Rosalinde in Die Fledermaus, Mimi in La Bohème, Cio-Cio-San in Madama Butterfly, the title role of Manon Lescaut, Tatiana in Eugene Onegin, the title role of Suor Angelica, Euridice in Orfeo ed Euridice, Katerina in Lady Macbeth of Mtsensk, the Countess in Le Nozze di Figaro, Marguerite in Faust, Agathe in Der Freischütz, Marie in Wozzeck, the title role of Jenůfa, Eva in Die Meistersinger von Nürnberg, Elsa in Lohengrin, Amelia in Un Ballo in Machera, Leonora in La Forza del Destino, and the title role of Aida. -

Ennis Cathedral: The Building & Its People. Saturday 29th. August 2009 Presented by the Clare Roots Society Clare Roots Society The Clare Roots Society, brainchild of Ennisman Larry Brennan, was formed in April 2006 as an amateur family history group. The Society meets once a month in Ennis, and has approx. 50 members. Anyone with an interest in tracing their family tree is welcome to join. Some members are experienced genealogists while others are novices in the field. In addition to local members, we have some 'virtual' members who live overseas, but who follow our activities via email, and dream that they are in Clare. Activities are advertised in local press and in the Ennis Cathedral church bulletin. Under the Chairmanship of Declan Barron and his committee of Fiona de Buitleir, Eric Shaw, Larry Brennan & Paddy Waldron, guest speakers were arranged at past meetings including Paul O’Donnell of the South Galway genealogy group, Peter Beirne of 'The Manse' Local Studies library in Ennis, Jim Herlihy on the RIC, Liam Curran on Irish Soldiers in the British Army, Jonny Dillon of the Folklore Dept., UCD, and Dr. Pat Nugent of the University of Liverpool amongst others. From our own members, speakers have included Dr. Paddy Waldron, Gerry Kennedy, Ger Madden, Declan Barron, Eric Shaw, Robert Cullen, and Larry Brennan. In addition, we have run a number of hands-on computer workshops on genealogical research and the recording of data. The society works in partnership with Clare County Library in order to add to the wonderful fund of genealogy information already available on their website www.clarelibrary.ie Our biggest project to date, completed in 2008 with the assistance of a grant from the Heritage Council of Ireland, involved transcription of the gravestones in the old Drumcliffe Cemetery. -

Illustration by Agostino Iacurci On a chilly, wet day in late November, I visited the Central Cemetery, in Vienna, where 2/13 several of the most familiar figures in musical history lie buried. In a musicians’ grove at the heart of the complex, Beethoven, Schubert, and Brahms rest in close proximity, with a monument to Mozart standing nearby. According to statistics compiled by the Web site Bachtrack, works by those four gentlemen appear in roughly a third of concerts presented around the world in a typical year. Beethoven, whose two-hundred-and-fiftieth birthday arrives next year, will supply a fifth of Carnegie Hall’s 2019-20 season. When I entered the cemetery, I turned left, disregarding Beethoven and company. Along the perimeter wall, I passed an array of lesser-known but not uninteresting figures: Simon Sechter, who gave a counterpoint lesson to Schubert; Theodor Puschmann, an alienist best remembered for having accused Wagner of being an erotomaniac; Carl Czerny, the composer of piano exercises that have tortured generations of students; and Eusebius Mandyczewski, a magnificently named colleague of Brahms. Amid these miscellaneous worthies, resting beneath a noble but unpretentious obelisk, is the composer Antonio Salieri, Kapellmeister to the emperor of Austria. I had brought a rose, thinking that the grave might be a neglected and cheerless place. Salieri is one of history’s all-time losers—a bystander run over by a Mack truck of malicious gossip. -

Shortlisted in The Australian/Vogel Literary award in 1998, Salt Letters was published by Allen & Unwin in 1999. It was subsequently published by W.W. Norton, New York and translated into Italian and German. Christine has a PhD in Creative Writing from Melbourne University and teaches in the MA Creative Writing Program at RMIT. On writing Ophelia’s Fan—Christine Balint Ophelia’s Fan began with my own experience of hearing Berlioz’s Symphonie Fantastique along with its rarely performed sequel Lélio or The Return to Life. Both of these orchestral works by the Romantic French composer were inspired by the Irish Shakespearean actress Harriet Smithson. Seeing her on stage in Paris in 1827, Berlioz fell in love. I sat in the audience in Melbourne watching an actor playing a young Romantic artist with long hair, lolling about on the grand piano and raving about Ophelia, Juliet, and Shakespeare. As I listened, I began to wonder what it would be like to be Harriet, hearing the work she inspired for the first time. The subject of Harriet and Berlioz and the symphony is rich with possibility. It has allowed me to work with many subjects that have interested me for some time: music, Shakespeare, theatre, and nineteenth-century history. The research process took me from the Bishop’s Palace in Ennis, County Clare, to the Freemason’s records in Dublin, to the Bibliothèque Nationale de France. -

Joseph summer’s The Shakespeare Concerts Series 2 TheFairOphelia Joseph summer’s The Shakespeare Concerts Series The Fair Ophelia is the second offering in Navona’s THE SHAKESPEARE CONCERTS SERIES, consisting of diverse settings of Ophelia’s mad scene and Gertrude’s reflection on Ophelia’s death from Shakespeare’s The Tragedy of Hamlet, Prince of Denmark by Berlioz, Brahms, Schumann, Saint-Saëns, Strauss, Cage, and Summer. The parallax views of Ophelia experienced by the composers present the listener with an unusual opportunity to hear Ophelia in a three dimensional perspective. Is this tragic Shakespearean maiden mad because she’s angry with those characters who inhabit her world, or should we be angry with those characters who inhibit her predilections, and thus have made mad the hapless heroine? The next offering in Navona’s THE SHAKESPEARE CONCERTS SERIES is GODDESSES, featuring The Tempest’s three goddesses: Juno, Ceres, and Iris in a setting of Honour, Riches, Marriage-Blessing by Joseph Summer. Other highlights are Andrea Chenoweth singing Ariel songs by Thomas Linley accompanied by Massachusetts’ renowned period ensemble, Arcadia Players, under the direction of Ian Watson; mezzo-soprano Kellie Van Horn performing Shall I compare Thee To A Summer’s Day with Jessica Lizak on flute; and In The Old Age Black Was Not Counted Fair with tenor Luke Grooms, baritone Paul Soper, and Clark Matthews on French horn. 2 Program Notes BY JOSEPH SUMMER 3 Introduction There being a myriad of interpretations of the character of Ophelia from Shakespeare’sThe Tragedy of Hamlet, Prince of Den- mark, when it was time for me to create program notes for the 2012 concert, it seemed to me that like the program itself, within which seven composers’ interpretations were realized, the program books should reflect this diversity; ergo, instead of creating a singular template from which every copy would be manufactured, I drew up many different versions.
