Already, it is time to look back and analyse. Let us leave the technicians to identify the tactical trends, the economists to assess the financial impact, the statisticians to describe the matches and tournament in figures, and everyone to draw their own personal conclusions from EURO 2008. The limited space available in this editorial is hardly sufficient for such exercises, but it does enable me to thank everyone – starting with the Austrian and Swiss host associations – who helped to make this tournament such a great success. For that is the main conclusion: EURO 2008 was a magnificent success at every level and the call for respect was well and truly answered. The competition’s slogan IN THIS ISSUE promised emotions and it certainly did not fail to deliver: plenty of surprises, games turned on their heads in the last few minutes, penalty shoot-outs, tears of joy and Spain win EURO 2008 03 despair among the supporters and, above all, a festive atmosphere in the stadiums, fan zones and cities.

Matches – 19 October 1968 – Burnley 5 Leeds United 1 First Division – Turf Moor – 26,423 Scorers: Bremner 23 min Burnley: Thomson, Smith, Latcham, Dobson, Waldron, Blant, Thomas, Murray, Casper, Coates, Kindon Leeds United: Sprake, Reaney, Cooper (Lorimer 70), Bremner, Charlton, Hunter, O‟Grady, Giles, Jones, Madeley, Gray In a season when Leeds United finally realised the rich potential they had hinted at for five years, one particular game stood out like a sore thumb, a very, very sore thumb, indeed. Their campaign was founded on ruthless efficiency and leaving the minimum to chance, but it was punctuated by the most extraordinary of calamities one Saturday afternoon towards the end of October. United were sitting atop the Division One table as they travelled to Turf Moor to face a promising young Burnley team. They had dropped just four points in 13 games and came into the game on the back of three successive clean sheets in the League. Their only Division One reverse had come the month before, away to reigning champions Manchester City, though during the week they had bowed out The Yorkshire Evening Post of 19 October 1968 carries the news of the 5- of the League Cup after losing 2-1 at Second 1 defeat at Turf Moor Division Crystal Palace. It was clear, though, that United had treated the defence of the trophy they had won in March less than seriously. Terry Lofthouse in the Yorkshire Evening Post: “When the final reckoning is made at the end of the season, Leeds United‟s 2-1 defeat by Crystal Palace in the fourth round of the League Cup may have been a blessing in disguise.

  • A HISTORY of CLUB CRICKET in COUNTY DURHAM Chapter One
A HISTORY OF CLUB CRICKET IN COUNTY DURHAM Chapter One..........The eighteenth century In the beginning The first recorded cricket match in Durham was at Raby Castle in 1751. It was five years after the Duke of Cumberland and bayoneted Redcoats slogged through the county’s mud on their way to the Battle of Culloden. Defoe’s account of his travels through Great Britain had not long been published. Defoe found nothing remarkable in Darlington or Chester-le-Street except “dirt” but was impressed by Lumley Castle and acknowledged Lumley coal the best in the country. He thought Durham a “compact neatly contriv’d city” where clergy lived “in all the splendour and magnificence imaginable”. Durham cathedral and Saint Cuthbert’s remains were a shrine for pilgrims but the city was a vulnerable haven riding on a cut-throat sea. The poor lived in slums; the populace was prey to vagabonds, footpads and highwaymen. The Bishop of Durham bewailed “the scorn of religion”. His flock scratched a living on the land or burrowed beneath it for lead and coal; their leisure centred upon drinking and blood sports like cock-fighting. In 1742 John Wesley came across a village “inhabited by colliers only, and as such had been always in the first rank for savage ignorance, and wickedness of every kind. Their grand assembly used to be on the Lord’s Day on which men, women and children met together to dance, fight, curse, and swear, and play chuck-ball, span farthing, or whatever came to hand.” Somehow, sometime the game of cricket took root in these parts.
