2018 Regionals Skills Canada BC Regional competitions in 2018 were expanded to include more than 2,100 competitors – an increase from 1,800 competitors in 2017.

The Inspire Program Skills Canada BC, as an early influencer offered youth in the important K–12 demographic provided opportunities to thousands of students to explore trade and technology careers through the Inspire program. In 2018 the Inspire program was delivered to 15,000 students, in 23 communities around the province.

Women in Trade and Technology Conference Skills Canada BC hosted the popular Women in Trade and Technology Conference during the Provincial competition (April 18, 2018). This exciting event is growing each year and is an important program that introduces young women to skilled trades and technology apprenticeships and careers.

2018 Provincial Competition Skills Canada BC’s annual Provincial competition (held April 18, 2018) hosted brought together an audience comprised of competitors, students, parents, educators, government, labour and industry leaders and the general public.

This exciting event covered more than 160,000 sq. ft. of competition space at the Tradex in Abbotsford. Thousands of student spectactors were bused in to watch the competitions, participate in the Women in Trade and Technology Conference or participate in a Try-a-Trade activity.

• “(Virtual)” indicates that the competition was held at many schools in the region and then projects were mailed to judges to determine the medalists for the Region and who qualifies for the Provincial Competition. • “(Locally Developed)” indicates that a volunteer decided to create a contest that is not normally held at the Regional level. When such a contest becomes popular and spreads to other Regions, it becomes part of the regular contests.

2018 NATIONALS

The 2018 Skills Canada National competition was held June 4 - 5, in Edmonton, Alberta. More than 550 competitors vied for a spot on the podium. Over 7,000 student visitors visited this exciting event and discovered the many careers available in skilled trades and technology sectors.

The 2018 Skills Canada National Competition profiled one of the nine Essential Skills “Problem Solving” and how it is part of every skilled trade and technology career. Additionally, the changing dynamics of the workforce was recognized and highlighted in the digital literacy and technology demonstrations that are crucial to BC keeping pace with a quickly changing job market. 3D Digital Game Art is an example of a new technology that was featured in the 2018 National competition.

2019 WORLDSKILLS INTERNA TIONAL COMPETITION

The 2019 WorldSkills International Competition will be held in Kazan, Russia, August 29 – September 3, 2019. Seven Britsh Columbian competitors are set to compete in a final qualifying roundin Halifax, May 26 – 28, 2019, to win a spot on Team Canada to compete in Russia.

7 2018 INSPIRE: IN SCHOOL PRESENTATIONS: INFOR M! RELATE! EXCITE!

In 2014/2015 school year Skills Canada BC launched a unique in-school “Inspire” program that introduced over 400 students, grades 6 – 12, to skilled trades and technology careers.

Today, the Inspire Progam is an in-demand program with educators, province-wide. In the 2017/2018 school year, the Inspire Program was delivered to more than 15,000 students, (including approximately 7,500 female students) to rave reviews. Many of the Inspire presentations are delivered to mainstream classrooms and connect with a demographic of students and teachers not currently in the dual credit or skilled trades streams.

Summary of Inspire program presentations and deliverables from September 2017 to June 2018. September 2016 – June 2017: Activities Completed

• 509 InSPIRE presentations were delivered to 327 elementary and 182 secondary schools. • Presentations were delivered in 10 of the 13 Skills Canada BC Regions. • Approximately 15,210 K-12 students in 16 school districts have been presented with the program during this period. • 10 Facilitators delivered programs in towns/cities across BC between September 2017 and June 2018.

2017/18 School Year: Inspire Program Implementation

Demand for Inspire presentations has remained extremely strong throughout the school year. It is anticipated that this demand will continue in the 2017/18 school year especially in alignment with the new curriculum being implemented throughout the province.

September 2017 – June 2018 program highlights are listed below:

• InSPIRE registration was open to BC educators in mid October with the program beginning in late October in school districts across the province.

• Surrey school district once again encouraged all grade 6 and 10 educators to register for the program, by the end of the 2017 school year 203 presentations were completed in that district.

• 10 Facilitators in the Regional Areas of Vancouver Island South, Vancouver Island Central, North West Lower Mainland, Central Lower Mainland, Lower Fraser Valley, Upper Fraser Valley, Cariboo, Central Okanagan, North West, and the Peace Regions were contracted to present the InSPIRE program. All facilitators have a background in trades/skills training and/or education; all have undergone criminal records checks.

• Stanley DeWalt (hand tool company) has been the official hand tool supplier for InSPIRE – providing in-kind support with tool boxes, tools and prizes for the Skills Challenge.

2018/19 School Years Activities Planned

• It is projected that 500 Inspire presentations will be completed during this period to approximately 15,000 students.

• Registration is open to all regions of the Province (September 2018)

• In preparation for the 2018/19 school year, program planning, registration and website updates will begin prior to registration opening.
