Was this station axually signing off? The only 660 in IRCA Mexican Log shown closing at 0600 is XEACB Cd. Delicias, Chihuahua, and the direxion fits. But remember we are in the two sesquiweeks of confusion between U.S. and Mexican DST start dates, except for border cities, which Delicias is not. [Hauser‐OK] 670 CUBA R.Rebelde, multiple sites FEB 1 2300 – Parallel 1180 with Cuba newstalk; dominant. [Connelly*Y‐MA] MAR 10 1000 – R.Rebelde and its presumed relay outside Habana off‐ frequency 671 making constant het during WSCR downtime; the two null at the same point from here, conveniently. Nothing else but KBOI heard with DX test minutes. At 1002 with WSCR back on, Rebelde network was starting a new broadcast day originating remotely from Manzanillo. [Hauser‐OK] 671 CUBA R.Rebelde, unknown site MAR 10 0803 – Checking the channel with the Chicago stations off for maintenance, this one was the only audible station, clear but low modulation as always, and of course creating a huge het. [Connelly*O‐MA] 710 CUBA R.Rebelde, multiple sites FEB 1 2300 – Talk parallel 670 et al.; over WOR. [Connelly*Y‐MA] 710 MEXICO XEDP Cd. Cuauhtémoc, Chih. MAR 20 1226 – A fellow speaking Low German, with hymn accompaniment; his accent sounds English rather than Spanish, and he mentions Chihuahua, so hereʹs another station serving that community. Immediately into Spanish with usual singing ID from XEDP, ʺLa Ranchera de Cuauhtémoc,ʺ as often heard around sunrise only in Spanish. I wonder if that Plattdeutsch was brief announcement or a full program? MAR 30 0535 – Preacher in Spanish from SW with Cuba nulled, with het which seems to come from this station, then with PSA mentioning Chihuahua, so XEDP may have gone off‐frequency. [Hauser‐OK] 720 BRAZIL ZYI770 Recife or ZYK276 Porto Alegre MAR 21 2306 – Portuguese fast talk by man; on LSB to dodge WOR IBOC. [Connelly*O‐MA] 16 720 CUBA R.Progreso, Mabujabo MAR 7 2330 – Progreso ID; over others, LSB used to dodge WOR IBOC. [Connelly*Y‐MA] 720 MEXICO XEDE Saltillo, Coah. MAR 10 0806 – WGN goes off after referring to their webcast, and Mexican music immediately takes over and dominates the frequency for most of the next two hours. At first I think the Mexican is KSAH San Antonio which I have blamed for spoiling WGN reception when trying to listen to ʹExtension 720ʹ; however, now itʹs really XEDE, and no trace of KSAH. Most of their pieces are only 2 or 3 minutes long, with automated time and temp between each. As soon as music stops, time check just with the numbers such as at 0812, ʺdos, doce,ʺ next music already starts up making it hard to copy the rest of the break, but at 0844 super‐hype ʺKalienteʺ and woman with temp, ʺ6 grados centígrados,ʺ hearing that numerous times more such as 0824, 0842, 0912; after 0900 it has plunged to 5 degrees. XEDE runs full canned IDs with sound effects near the hour and half hour, such as at 0858 and 0930 mentioning Saltillo, with their full address in Colonia Universitaria. MAR 12 0235 – Auroral conditions facilitate XEDE to continue dominating frequency vs. little if anything from WGN. Usual automated music format with time check, ʺLa Kalienteʺ and temperature at every break. MAR 30 1201 – Choral national anthem, mixing with presumed KSAH, ID mentions their time and temp format, Coahuila, and ʺLa Kaliente.ʺ [Hauser‐OK] 730 CUBA R.Progreso, La Fe FEB 1 2330 – Chimes, Progreso ID parallel 640; over WJTO groundwave, CKAC nulled and auroraʹed to oblivion. [Connelly*Y‐MA] 740 BRAZIL ZYH446 R.Sociedade da Bahia, Salvador MAR 22 0000 – Typical top‐of‐hour ʺClose Encountersʺ theme (5 notes on electronic instrument), Portuguese talk; briefly cutting through the competition from CFZM and CHCM. [Connelly*Y‐MA] 780 BRITISH VIRGIN ISLANDS ZBVI Roadtown, Tortola MAR 21 2306 – ʺThis is Radio Station Zed BVIʺ into slow soul male vocal; over R.Coro. [Connelly*O‐MA] 780 MEXICO XEWGR Exa FM, Monclova, Coah. MAR 10 BM0805 – WB is second to go off (for 670, 720, and 780 Chicago scheduled down time), forwarding listeners to their FM 105.9, and promising to come right back on if there is any emergency. 780 is then mostly occupied by techno music, presumably XEWGR Exa FM, as recently logged with WBBM on; this is not as dominant as XEDE is on 720; at 0816, it has some CCI, maybe another Mexican; 0846 there is some JBA talk with XE nulled. 0909, XEWGR goes into a fade and some other woman is talking in Spanish, 0911, music fades back up tod mix an overtake. By 0947, WBBM is first to come back with news. (It was the instigator of this outage, and its neighbors had to go off for safety reasons.) [Hauser‐OK] 780 VENEZUELA YVMN R.Coro, Coro FEB 1 2331 – Reverberated man ʺen Coro ... la informaciónʺ; dominant. [Connelly*Y‐MA] 830 MEXICO XEITE México, DF MAR 12 0239 – Mexican music, rather than WCCO, too far up into the auroral zone; 0300 ID as R.Capital, 25 mil watts, which is supposed to cut to only 5 mil at night. Mexican stations are required to carry government PSAs, unlike Americans, optional fillers), ʺEl Planeta Terraʺ and ʺMilenio Televisión presenta,ʺ more talk, i.e. XEM Chihuahua per Cantú, 500 watts at night. IRCA Log 2011 did not have this with Milenio, instead ʺRenacimiento 850,ʺ changed affiliation? [Hauser‐OK] 860 BRAZIL ZYH592 R.Cidade, Maracanau MAR 21 2315 – Portuguese talk by man; mixed with CJBC and VON St. Kitts & Nevis. Robert Vance says, ʺYouʹre terminated!ʺ ‐ I terminated both loops with approx. 900 ohm resistance to favor north and east reception respectively. All of the local El Paso and Juárez stations are to the 20 west and south, and it appears to be working out quite well so far. I still get the locals on the east loop but at greatly reduced levels, making them easier to phase out against the north loop more effectively. Suppressing the XEʹs to the south also has seemed to make eastern XE reception a bit better so hopefully I can ferret more of those out. Also, I hope to be able to snag a few more Canadians before they go away for good, Iʹve only gotten two of those from this location. Next on tap is the upgrade of the north‐south loop into a 25 x 14‐ft loop terminated on both bottom corners and fed through a termination gizmo. Iʹve got the gizmo built and the two xfmrs wound, just need to build the corner boxes. Got my supports ready to go, just need to get it done; hopefully before the end of April.

Pro Sports Barry S. Finkel [email protected] 10314 S. Oakley Networks Chicago, IL 60643-2409 Network listings for professional sports play-by-play coverage

Here are updates to the Major League Baseball (MLB) network lists. Scott Fybush reports: ʺA few updates to your MLB lists in the latest DXN: ʺThatʹs last yearʹs affiliate list for the Red Sox. They drop WTLA 1200/WSGO 1440 (and their FM translators) in Syracuse, but they have added WTRY 980 in Troy/Albany. WEEI‐FM 93.7 is the new co‐flagship (with WEEI 850) in Boston; that simulcast started last September. WXTK 95.1 is off the network now that sister station WEII 96.3 has picked up the Sox for the Cape. WPKZ 1280 (and its FM translator at 105.3) has been dropped from the network this year. ʺThe Mets actually have a mini‐network this year: theyʹve picked up WTLA/WSGO in Syracuse and WMML 1230 in Glens Falls. The new Mets broadcaster is Josh Lewin, not ʺLevin.ʺ (He and I went to high school together!) ʺI believe WBZQ 1300‐IN is off the Cubs network this year; the station has been sold and is going SS‐REL. ʺThe Yankees add WPKZ 1280‐MA to their network this year. WADO 1280 is once again the SS flagship for the Yankees, though Iʹm not sure itʹs a full schedule there.ʺ

About the Boston Red Sox list ‐ The URL http://www.weei.com/weei/shows‐schedules/red‐sox‐radio‐network is undated, so I do not know if it is really last yearʹs list. Another URL http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Boston_Red_Sox_Radio_Network 21 has a network list, but it does not list the source. I compared the WEEI list with the wiki list, and there are differences. The wiki page has a list of 26 former affiliates, but some of the stations that are on the WEEI list but not on the wikie list ar not listed as former affiliates. (But some are listed.) The wiki Red Sox list is reproduced below. As for 1300 WBZQ‐IN and the Chicago Cubs ‐ I do not know ths status. A quick Google search does not show a web page for that station, and the Cubsʹ list online is a current list.

Allan Dunn reports, ʺIn your Pro Sports Network Affiliates column in DX News, WPKZ‐1280 is no longer a Boston Red Sox affiliate, but a New York Yankees affiliate. In talking to my in‐laws who live in central , there is a noticeable Yahkees following in that areaʺ And Scott Fybush also reports, ʺJust saw an article today that the Yankees are switching Tampa affiliates from WHBO 1040 to WWBA 820 this year.ʺ Remember that any network list may change throughout the season.

Things appear to have returned to “normal” now.

NOAA Space Weather Outlook Issued March 26 – For the period March 26‐April 21, 2012 Solar activity is expected to be at low to moderate levels. Predominantly low levels are expected from 26 ‐ 28 March, when old Region 1429 rotates back onto the northeast limb. M‐class flare probabilities are expected to increase from 28 March ‐ 11 April as old Region 1429 progresses across the solar disk. A return to low levels is expected to prevail for the remainder of the period, 12 ‐ 21 April. No proton events are forecast from 26 ‐ 30 March. An increase to a slight chance for proton events is forecast from 31 March ‐ 11 April as old Region 1429 populates the visible disk. A return to background proton flux levels is expected from 12 April ‐ 21 April. Electrons, greater than 2 MeV, are expected to be at normal to moderate levels from 26 ‐ 28 March. From 29 March ‐ 03 April, moderate to high levels are expected. From 04 ‐ 13 April, a return to normal to moderate levels is expected. Moderate to high levels are expected from 14 ‐ 18 April. A return to normal levels is expected for the remainder of the period. The geomagnetic field is expected to be at mostly quiet levels from 26 ‐ 27 March. Quiet to active levels are expected from 28 ‐29 March in response to the effects of a CH HSS. Predominantly quiet levels are expected from 30 March ‐ 12 April. An increase to quiet to active levels is expected from 13 ‐ 14 April in response to a CH HSS. Quiet levels are expected to prevail for the remainder of the period.
