  • Summary of the Project Entitled
SUMMARY OF THE PROJECT ENTITLED “TOURISM INDUCED CHANGES IN THE MEIOFAUNAL DIVERSITY OF CHERAI BEACH – A PROMINENT TOURIST BEACH OF KERALA” By Dr. Priyalakshmi G Dept. of Zoology Bharata Mata College Thrikkakara, Kochi The world’s sandy beaches are iconic assets to society, but escalating threats to these systems pose formidable conservation challenges. During the last decades, recreational activities have been increasing rapidly as people enjoy more leisure time and higher standards of living. Many of these activities are focused on coastal tourism. Tourism has long been considered as a clean industry with almost no negative effects on the environment. Partly due to their barren appearance, sandy beaches have not been regarded as vulnerable to human disturbance (Poulson & Mc Clung, 1999). But beaches are not just piles of sand; they support a range of underappreciated biodiversity. Sandy beaches harbour diverse and abundant assemblage of marine organisms. Besides macrofauna, the sandy beaches are profusely inhabited by microscopic organisms belonging to the lower and higher invertebrate taxa. These organisms that occupy the spaces between the sand grains are called ‘Interstitial Fauna’ or ‘meiofauna’. The diversity of these interstitial organisms that inhabit the interstices of beach sands in the intertidal realm is so astounding that 22 of the known 33 metazoan phyla have their representatives living in this ecosystem. The Gastrotricha, Kinorhyncha, Gnathostomulida, Loricifera, Mystacocarida, Nematoda, Polychaeta, Copepoda, Ostracoda, Turbellaria, Halacaroidea, Hydrozoa, Nemertina, Entoprocta, Gastropoda, Aplacophora, Brachiopoda, Holothuroidea, Tunicata, Priapulida, Sipuncula and many representatives of Rotifera are permanent meiofauna, whereas some organisms like the larvae of macrofauna are a part of meiobenthos, only during their juvenile stages (temporary meiofauna). Thus, benthos represents a major component of the marine environment and plays a vital role in the overall food chain in the sea (Ganesh & Raman, 2007).

  • Solid Waste Across the Coastline of Kerala JANET ORLENE | ERNAKULAM
SOLO WOMAN WALK-BATAPADY BEACH TO KANYAKUMARI-850+ KM-OCTOBER 5TH 2019 TO DECEMBER 6TH 2019-K2K THE COASTAL WALK Solid Waste Across the Coastline of Kerala JANET ORLENE | ERNAKULAM On October 5th, 2019, Janet Orlene set out on a solo coastline walk from Batapady beach near the border of Kerala to Kanyakumari. Backed by a team of 2, Pradeep Rajendran and Meghana Basavaraju, Janet covered the entire strip of coast meeting the unique terrains, people and solid waste patterns of Kerala. *This report has not been formally edited.* | 4th July 2010 | Authored by Janet Orlene 1 Introduction What I expected to see was completely different from what I saw. I expected to find a lot more sanitary napkins, thin plastic bags, more obvious chemical pollution and other textbook things that I’ve learnt all my life. Instead, the largest quantities of solid waste turned out to be in the form of slippers and shoes, plastic water bottles, diapers, medical waste and household waste. The chemicals I saw polluting the ocean were in the form of thin oily surfaces (often near ferries and the shipbreaking yards), mining wastes, sewage, etc. This journey through all of the most beautiful coastal landscapes Kerala had to offer was an eyeopener in terms of human activity caused destruction. The coastline is one of the most powerful indicators of the human-caused environmental crisis. What this report aims to show are the observations I made during the walk down the coastline of Kerala. Note: *Although not mentioned otherwise, one of the largest polluters across Kerala shore are diapers.

Munambam Muziris Beach Munambam Muziris Beach is one of the most beautiful beaches on Vypin Island. It is the focal point of the Periyar River and the Arabian Sea and is one of the most beautiful places to enjoy the sunset in the region. The beach has also been gifted with natural green spaces that provide shade for resting and places for children to play. However, the beach has received much less attention from the authorities than the busier Cherai Beach located three kilometres away. And, local residents who are living with disabilities were unable to use the space because there were no facilities that would allow them to access the beach. Through ESAF’s advocacy and expertise in redesigning public spaces as inclusive play spaces, the Munambam Muziris Beach project worked towards making the beach more functional and inclusive for all people irrespective of their gender, age and ability so that they all could enjoy the beach as they would any other public space.

The BMCs of Kerala has also been declared as Environmental watch groups by the Government of Kerala vide GO No 04/13/Envt dated 13.05.2013. In Kerala after the devastating natural disasters of August 2018 Post Disaster Needs Assessment ( PDNA) has been conducted officially by international organizations. The present report of Rapid Impact Assessment of flood/ landslides on Biodiversity focus on community perspectives of the affect on Biodiversity and Ecosystems. It is for the first time in India that such an assessment of impact of natural disasters on Biodiversity was conducted at LSG level and it is a collaborative effort of BMC and Kerala State Biodiversity Board (KSBB). More importantly each of the 187 BMCs who were involved had also outlined the major causes for such an impact as perceived by them and suggested strategies for biodiversity conservation at local level. Being a study conducted by local community all efforts has been made to incorporate practical approaches for prioritizing areas for biodiversity conservation which can be implemented at local level.

Marine and terrestrial organic matter, mangrove and terrestrial pollen, dino agellate cysts, diatoms, Total organic carbon, percentage of sand, silt and clay, total dissolved solids and salinity were recorded in the sediment samples from each station. Based on the study, three depositional zones were identi ed in the Vembanad wetland i) ood tidal basin, ii) Central tidal basin, and iii) uvial basin. The constant composition of terrestrial and mangrove pollen in the 8 stations of the northern Vembanad ecosystem from Munambaom-Barmouth points to tidal in uence. Low percentage of dinocysts and pollen but high percentage of diatoms in Munambaom, Cherai beach, and Midway to Cherai stations of the central part of Vembanad is probably due to prevalence of high energy and an oxidizing environment of deposition. Abundance of terrestrial pollen as well as fresh water diatoms, but extremely low representatives of marine dinocyst in the southern stations Kochi Shipyard-Kumarakaom indicate high uvial supply and proximal setting with respect to the terrestrial source.
