  • Listening Guide 9 “Mr. Tambourine Man”—1965 the Byrds/Bob Dylan
Listening Guide 9 “Mr. Tambourine Man”—1965 The Byrds/Bob Dylan Time Lyrics Description McGuinn’s jangly twelve-string introduction sets up the song with a two-measure 0:01 riff, much like the beginning of The Beatles’ “Ticket to Ride” and George Harrison’s twelve-string guitar riff. The tambourine and bass enter, and the bass slides up to the fifth note of the scale, 0:05 creating a memorable sound as well. The bass sound was more powerful than most recordings of the day, due to careful compression and production. 0:08 Drums set up the entry of the vocals. Hey, Mr. As the instrumental accompaniment continues, the three vocalists (McGuinn, Crosby, 0:09 Tambourine Man and Gene Clark) harmonize the chorus. 0:23 A short instrumental and a drum fill set up the second half of the chorus. Hey, Mr. 0:25 Harmonization continues. Tambourine Man 0:40 As the chorus ends, a rising line in one of the guitars leads into the verse. McGuinn’s voice, alone for the verse, was a purposeful middle ground between 0:43 Take me for a trip John Lennon and Bob Dylan. The second half of the verse is a good time to hear that McGuinn still has folk I’m ready to go 1:10 influences in his singing, but is clearly more concerned about singing well than Dylan anywhere was. Two measures of instrumental prepare for the return of the chorus, with a gentle drum 1:29 setup. Hey, Mr. 1:33 Return of the three-part harmony for the chorus, as at the beginning.

However, it was between 1962 and 1966 that the group had most of their chart success and that their unique ‘sound’ was crystallised. This study takes a broad, big- picture overview of the Beach Boy’s repertoire from this period and charts the development of their sound through the apprentice-craft-art (ACA) framework. The concept of a ‘sound’ is able to draw together the musical, technological, sociological and historical elements that, when combined, create the sound of the Beach Boys during the 1962-1966 period. The flexibility of this concept means that areas often overlooked in popular music studies and in studies on the Beach Boys in general (particularly the roles of production and instrument types), are able to be woven into analyses of more traditional musical elements (such as song structure or chord progressions).
