at speed MARK CAVENDISH MY LIFE IN THE FAST LANE “The greatest sprinter of all time.” —L’ÉQUIPE Praise for Boy Racer by Mark Cavendish “Boy Racer is an emotional, fast-paced and direct account of Cav’s transformation from awkward chubby teenager to world champion and Tour stage winner.” — Velo magazine “Boy Racer is Mark Cavendish’s brash, brutal and honest story of his life on the bike, full of the sound and fury of hand-to-hand combat at the finish line. Cavendish holds nothing back.” — USA Today “Mouthy former fat kid races bikes, kicks ass, hilarity ensues.” — Bicycling magazine “Like being hard-wired into the brain of the world’s fastest sprinter. [Boy Racer is] the closest to finding out what it feels like to be in the midst of a bunch sprint.” — Cycle Sport magazine “The Best 50 Cycling Books of All Time” “Few have brought the terrifying and visceral art of sprinting to life. Boy Racer redresses the balance.” —The Times “Boy Racer . catch[es] the inner conflict between the impetuous- ness that makes Cavendish such a daunting competitor and the in- trospection that makes him such an interesting person.” — The Guardian Copyright © 2014 by Mark Cavendish Published in 2013 by Ebury Press, an imprint of Ebury Publishing, A Random House Group company U.S. edition published in 2014 by VeloPress All rights reserved. Giudici Di Gara Quadriennio Olimpico 2013-2016
92nd SCHELDEPRIJS April 14 This Scheldeprijs is Johan Museeuw’s last race. The event draws a huge crow. Nico Mattan is alone in the break at the entrance of the final lap with a lead of 30”. He is caught after a 115 km breakaway. The first rider who bridges the gap is…Johan Museeuw. But the bunch is packed together for the finish and Boonen beats McEwen after a long side by side sprint. After the finish an impressive human tide marches on the Churchill Avenue. Everybody is really enthusiastic about young Boonen’s win and wants to pay respect to Johan Museeuw the day his career comes to an end. For the Love of the Cobbles Only Those Who Are in Top Condition Can Say That the Ronde Van Vlaanderen Is Not Hard
For the Love of the Cobbles Only those who are in top condition can say that the Ronde van Vlaanderen is not hard. For all others, it is the Way of the Cross. –Andrea Tafi 2 For the Love of the Cobbles A Journey Inside Cycling’s Cobbled Classic Racing Season, and a Ride Across the Hard Surfaces of Belgium and France By Chris Fontecchio Founding Editor of the Podium Café 3 Prologue On a spring afternoon in 1985, I did what I usually did when nothing was going on. I hopped on my bike and rode to my friend Steve’s house. It was spring break and I was home from college with no particular plans, so falling back on my high school routines was like slipping into an old sweatshirt. Those routines consisted of gathering across town -- biking on the nice days -- at either Steve’s house or another friend’s, and if anything like a quorum could be found, basketball or football or some warped rendition of baseball would happen. But on this day there was no quorum. Steve was home, hanging in his room, watching TV. “Check this out,” he said1 as he flicked on CBS Sports, showing a bike race from France. I’d caught a glimpse of the Tour de France before, enough to know the name and register some basic comprehension of the need for some people to race their bikes. Back then I poured over the sports pages every morning, and knew from the agate page (the one with the scores, standings, etc. -
