We lived on a hill overlooking an old farmhouse with a sheep corral surrounding it. A lot has changed around here since then, but, if you look closely at our surroundings, you can still see signs or reminiscences of our rural past. Our local history may be most evident, as you trek along the many trails throughout our beautiful mountains and hills. If you have any old photos of Conejo’s yesteryear, we would love to see them and, possibly, share them with our many readers. And speaking of pictures, we have a number of photographers who contribute to Conejo365 and do an amazing job of capturing the look and feel of our area. From the incredible horizons to the tiniest of wild flowers that spring up everywhere, these artists have it all covered, bringing our magazine pages to life. We would also like to express our sincere appreciation to our advertisers for helping to bring to everyone the hundreds of great events we promote through Conejo365. Special thanks go to CR Print for designing, printing, and distributing both the magazine and our website. And, for sure, let’s not forget the tremendous support of our readers who post their events on our website. Keep them coming! No event is too large or too small; the more unusual, the better. Go to our website at www.conejo365.com and click on “add your event” so we can include it in our magazine and in our regular, electronic updates. So you’re always up-to-date, don’t forgot to sign up for our weekly email called “Here’s what’s happening in the Conejo,” which is sent out every Thursday to all of our subscribers, showing the current calendar of events in our area. You can register for the email by going to our website. Happy Holidays and be sure to keep Conejo365 close at hand to enjoy everything the Conejo and surrounding areas have to offer! Their leadership came from the religious congregations of Brownist English Dissenters who had fled the volatile political environment in the East Midlands of England for the relative calm and tolerance of Holland in the Netherlands. Concerned with losing their cultural identity, the group later arranged with English investors to establish a new colony in North America. The colony, established in 1620, became the second successful English settlement (after the founding of Jamestown, Virginia, in 1607) and later the oldest continuously inhabited British settlement in what was to become the United States of America. The Pilgrims' story of seeking religious freedom has become a central theme of the history and culture of the United States. History Separatists in Scrooby The core of the group that would come to be known as the Pilgrims were brought together by a common belief in the ideas promoted by Richard Clyfton, a Brownist parson at All Saints' Parish Church in Babworth, Nottinghamshire, between 1586 and 1605.

Our region is fortunate to have rich soils, a year-round growing season, and a commitment to protecting our valuable farmlands. These assets are more important than ever in a world of rising energy and food costs, climate change, and growing concerns about food safety and food security. Like other areas on the urban fringe, however, there is enormous pressure to pave over farmland, and our farmers are stretched thin by complex regulations, weather and water uncertainties, labor shortages, and global price competition. Buying locally grown foods won’t solve all our problems, but it’s a great step in the right direction.

While we do enjoy a temperate climate year-round in the Conejo, we certainly do have changes in our weather and in our landscapes. If you have hiked any of the wonderful trails in our Santa Monica Mountains, you’ll experience a whole new perspective of where we live (and why we live here). Especially in the Fall, the hills are golden and dotted with giant green oak trees. The views from our mountain peaks are spectacular and seem to go on forever. If you’re looking out from some of these vistas, you can see a far off Catalina and the Channel Islands. Just a turn of 180 degrees and the entire Conejo Valley is revealed below. It just doesn’t get much better than this. Then, again, there is the incredible entertainment that is available to us in the Conejo. Just look through this magazine at the amazing variety of events and things to do here, further validating why we call this our home. Even with that, there is always more to discover.
