In case you have not yet put two and two together, St. Joseph is the patron saint of our parish. I know, crazy, right? ! ! He is such a wonderful patron for us and a great saint in the Church. He is celebrated in so many ! different ways and by so many different countries and groups. One country that rejoices in celebrating St. Joseph is Italy, especially on the island of Sicily. ! ! According to legend, during the Middle Ages, a severe drought plagued Sicily. The rain did not come and crops in the fields did not grow. The famine was so bad that many people died. Farmers and ! others turned to St. Joseph to ask for his prayers to God for their crops and lives. In exchange, they promised that they would honor God and St. Joseph with a special feast. ! ! They finally received a miraculous rain. The crops grew. With the harvest that came forth, the people kept their promise and prepared a huge feast for themselves, their neighbors, and those in need. It ! became an annual tradition known as Tavola di San Giuseppe. ! ! That tradition continues still today. Around the time of the Feast of St. Joseph, March 19 th , families and parishes in Sicily and throughout the world celebrate with the St. Joseph Table tradition. St. Joseph (your parish) has been celebrating this tradition for 26 years. It is the annual fundraiser to help those in need in our parish and community. All proceeds go to purchasing grocery store gift cards to be used by those struggling to make ends meet. ! ! The 27 th Annual St. Joseph Table will be next Sunday, March 3 rd , in McDevitt Hall in the basement of the church. There will be lots of baked goods, including around 7000 cookies, which will be for sale. Many of these will be beautifully displayed on the St. Joseph Table. The baked goods will be blessed after the 7:30am Mass. Throughout the morning, folks can purchase the baked goods (the baked goods on the St. Joseph Table, when purchased, will stay on display until 2pm.) Beginning at 11am, there will be a delicious pasta luncheon until 3pm. ! ! I want to thank the organizing committee and their large group of volunteers that make this great day happen. They have been hard at work for a few weeks now. ! ! Folks come from all around to attend our St. Joseph Table. I hope you also can join us for this ! wonderful annual event. Again, all proceeds go to our brothers and sisters in need in our community. ! ! St. Joseph, pray for us. ! ! In Christ’s Peace, ! ! Vol. 37, No. 1 ! Published for St. Joseph Parishioners ! February 24, 2019 ! The Doctor Is In ! by Ed Cronin ! ! ! “While I’m here, Doc, I’d like to get a flu shot” a fairly common ! request when we get our annual physical. Of course, we bring in a ! mental or written list of ailments we want to discuss and also get tested for an assortment of possible maladies. We don’t want to forget ! anything, since we hope it will be the only professional medical ! treatment we need this year. ! ! ! And so we continue to take the necessary measures to safeguard our health. After all, we don’t enjoy pain and illness. Beyond this, we ! protect ourselves from contagious diseases and maintain a healthy lifestyle. ! ! ! Flu shots and other vaccines, which are now readily available to us, are relatively new to mankind. Without them, there have been devastating epidemics that have taken huge tolls in lives. As history attests, we have ! consistently responded with efforts to discover medicines and vaccines to prevent future epidemics. ! ! ! We are now experiencing an epidemic for which we have not engaged in seeking a cure. Instead, measures are consistently taken to spread the disease. Our medical research cannot be relied on to protect us from its spread, since the epidemic is not of a physical nature. Worldwide, we are suffering a spiritual epidemic which is ! consistently being advanced rather than treated. ! ! ! If you have lived during the last few decades, you have seen a growing indifference toward sin, social ! acceptance of immorality, denial that there is anything such as sin, and aggressive attack on God’s laws through the legalization of a growing number of immoralities. Immoral laws have been enacted under the guise of support for our human “rights.” However, “rights” do not exist under conditions of immorality. There is much grave ! matter that should cast a pall of fear over our world, but it hasn ’t . A growing callousness has accompanied the growth. For those who have aided and abetted any advancement of this spiritual disease, the personal ailments ! suffered far exceed those that drive us to our annual physicals. Many of the maladies are of a grave nature. ! ! ! Where do we run for treatment? A doctor is not equipped to treat us. However, if we accept what Jesus taught us and the Church teaches, we know where treatment is available. But there is a curious difference between our search for medical treatment and that for our spiritual treatment. While we scramble to a doctor’s office, we ! commonly ignore a confessional. Why? As mentioned earlier, INDIFFERENCE. Perhaps it’s because we feel our physical ailments, but not necessarily our spiritual. ! ! ! Occasionally entertaining some crazy thoughts, I have wondered what would happen if our bodies were ! invisible for a moment and our souls visible. I envision a massive stampede to the confessional and a dramatic ! decline in cosmetic sales. We would need a larger church and maybe more Masses. ! ! ! I recall some time ago suffering a lack of motivation to seek spiritual healing, and did not go to confession for a period of time. I must have been driving my Guardian Angel nuts. In giving a knockout punch to indifference, I finally admitted to myself that I was playing Russian Roulette with my soul. I came to terms with the fact that need for treatment for my eternal soul far surpassed my need for any medical treatment. I resolved then that ! avoiding reconcilement made as much sense as yelling instructions to a golf ball in flight. ! ! ! Did you know that Cannon Law requires that we confess our sins at least once a year? I have a suggestion for those who have not been to confession in over a year: think of your visit to confession in the same way as your annual physical. And if a serious malady surfaces during the year, make an interim visit. Jesus, our Divine ! Physician, always awaits us. THE DOCTOR IS IN. ! S T . J O S E P H N E W S & V I E W S Mary’s Corner ! ! ! If you are looking for ways to make Lent more meaningful this year, I by Lida Wurtenberger ! would suggest the book, 3 3 Days to Morning Glory , by Father Michael Gaitley. Years ago Archbishop Naumann invited us to make this ! and many did. Making or renewing this consecration is a beautiful way to come closer to Jesus through devotion to Mary .! ! ! The book shows how this consecration was instrumental in forming the lives of four of our most beloved modern saints, Louis Marie DeMontfort, Maximilian Kolbe, Mother Teresa of ! Calcutta and John Paul II. St. Louis DeMontfort declared that it presents a short, easy, secure and perfect way to become a saint. ! ! ! Father Gaitley is convinced that this total consecration is a life changing experience. To quote Archbishop Naumann, “If you have never had a very strong Marian devotion before, this will be a wonderful opportunity to develop a beautiful friendship with Our Blessed Mother. If devotion to Mary is already an important part of your spiritual life, this will be an opportunity to renew and deepen friendship with Our Lady.” ! ! ! Normally you would start the preparation for the consecration on February 20 th to make or renew this total ! consecration to Jesus through Mary on March 25 th , the Feast of the Annunciation. . However, since we are past this date, you can start a few days late and read two days at a time until you catch up.! ! ! Members of the Legion of Mary, whose whole apostolate is based on Louis DeMontfort’s Tru e Devotion to Mary, rededicate themselves each March 25 th to our Queen and Our Mother. Those who give her everything can depend on her to present their poor gifts to Christ on a golden platter, so to speak, making them far more pleasing and beautiful. Try it. You will see it transform your life. 33 Days to Morning Glory may be purchased at ! Catholic bookstores or from Marian Press (1 800 804 3823). ! Ladies’ Guild Meetings ! (Information from Mike Reichmeier, other previous Grand Knights, and many dedicated Knights) ! ! ! Nearly 30 years ago, Shawnee Council Knights of Columbus began preparing and serving shrimp dinners on ! Friday evenings during Lent. Mike Reichmeier, coordinator of the dinners since their beginning in 1990 or 1991, said they were among the first in the archdiocese to have the dinners. Not only do Council members prepare and serve the dinners, but also many parishioners who are not members assist them. All net proceeds go to charity. ! ! ! They were very green the first year, not knowing how many would attend, and how much shrimp to prepare. ! Estimating 150 200, Knights Pat Baldwin, Joe Borders, and Mike cooked five pounds each in 5 gallon turkey ! fryers in a parking area adjacent to the K of C Hall. Falling short of their goal, they lost a few hundred dollars. ! ! ! The Council saw potential, and decided to try again the next year, serving every other Friday evening, with more cooks using the fryers outside the Hall. So many showed up on those evenings that many were turned away. ! However, they were more successful than the first year, with enough proceeds that they were able to donate nearly $1,500 to charity. Also, they were building a lot of camaraderie among Knights of all ages, and a very nice ! Lenten dinner was available for St. Joseph parishioners and others from around the archdiocese. ! ! ! Not being able to keep up with the demand using the 5 gallon fryers, more help was needed to serve the dinners in a timely manner, so they began to use fewer cooks and more Knights on the serving line. ! ! ! For the third year, they streamlined the cooking by coaxing Don Goode (“Quack”) not only to bring his ! 40 gallon cast iron pot, but also to help cook. Using this utensil, the Knights were able to go from cooking 15 pounds of shrimp to cooking up to 50 pounds at a time, and were able to include all the Fridays of Lent, except for Good Friday. The menu included shrimp and side dishes; desserts were added later at a small cost, prepared and served by Padre Pio Academy students, their parents, and faculty. ! ! ! Noted in a 1994 issue of News & Views : “Friday Night Shrimp Feed, $8 for all you can eat, hot dogs for kids $1.” Based on consumption and cost of shrimp, the pricing later was raised to $10. When the cost of shrimp ! skyrocketed, it was increased to $14, with a seniors price of $12. A few were taking advantage of “a ll you can eat”, taking home in hidden containers more than they consumed on site; not wanting to punish anyone for that ! behavior, a nominal charge of $3 was added for seconds. Pizza by the slice was added to the menu in recent years at $1 per slice for kids, but now two free slices are given to children 8 and under when they are accompanied by a paying adult. Three years ago fried and baked cod were added at a cost of $8. Today that meal accounts for at least a third of the dinners. ! ! ! Since its beginning, 10 12 Knights have assisted with the dinner; today a minimum of 25 30 are on the ! cooking and serving lines. Some have been on the dinner crew from day one and still are helping. Larry Brunner is cited as being one of the first who is still involved. The Knights wanted to recognize other key workers they have counted on through the years, saying there probably are more who have escaped their memories. Having it down to a science, Dickie Marx has been the main chef/shrimp cooker, with Chris Boutte, Lee Cunningham, and Matt Flickner assisting. These guys have been doing it for 15+ years. Don Goode was a cook for a few years ! after he donated the large cooking pot. ! ! ! From potato cleaners to food preparers, table bussers, servers, cashiers, bartenders, set up and clean up crews, more than 200 Knights, their children and grandchildren have helped over the years, with volunteers including Paul Fischer, Ron Derks, Shawn Sourk, Dave Boyd, Larry Brunner, Leo Rieke, Ed Rottinghaus, Rich Brandl, Dave Carl, Dan Nicks, Tom Nicks, Mickey Sandifer, Robin Mika, Pat McNally, Dick Lynch, Mike Maderak, Tim Macek, Larry Batliner, Rich Sutton, Joe Borders, Jim O’Connell, Larry Hoffman, George Barter, George Anton, Rich Hathorne, Keith Winterhalter, Jake Rieke, Chris Meyer, Zachary Kolich, Chris Handlin, Biz Lambert, ! Michael Hogard, Jason Brentano, and Joe Morrison. ! ! ! The Knights feel that it has been a worthwhile journey, but not always without a few incidents. The doors had to be closed a few times because of snow or icy weather. In the fourth and fifth years, more shrimp had to be ! purchased at local grocery stores when the demand exceeded their expectations. Bacos were initially used on the salad at first. We then thought they might be made from bacon, so we stopped using them. (We later learned ! Baco’s are not made from Bacon, but made from Soy!) KU and K State affected the crowds during Big 12 or NCAA tournaments on Friday nights. Now there are eight TV’s in the Hall to attract the crowds! ! ! ! The most important benefits from having the shrimp dinners through the years are the friendships created among the Knights, the fellowship among the customers, and being able to donate over $300,000 to charity. ! ! ! The Knights thank you for your continued support! We look forward to serving you and your families at the Friday night dinners during Lent, starting at 5pm March 8th at the K of C Hall! ! S T .
