The humble doughnut soon came to symbolize the Salvationists' work among American troops—work that has continued through three subse- quent wars to present-day induction centers and the "Army's" own Red Shield Clubs. Last year, they dis- tributed 291,000 travel kits to armed forces inductees and the "Army's" League of Mercy visited thousands of patients in Veterans Hospitals. Ever since they first hit the streets of New York City in 1880, Salvation Army workers have been practicing their motto, "With heart to God and hand to man." In this, their 101st year, their work continues unabated. Servicemen have never "gone out of style" to the Salvation Army, not during WWII when they operated 43 USO clubs and 3,000 Red Shield Clubs worldwide, nor during the Ko- rean and Vietnam Wars. And today, Lt. Col. Harry W. Poole, Salvation Army national con- sultant for Armed Forces Services, sounds surprised to be asked why the organization continues to serve. "Why, because we're needed," he said. "It's vitally important to main- tain that contact between a soldier and his family and community. And that's what we strive to do."

Richard A. felt as though he were locked into a dead- end job. He hadn't been his exuberant self for weeks. Regardless of how much sleep he got, he was always exhausted. No matter how hard he pushed himself, the results were a Sisyphus- like what's-the-use feeling. The zest that once propelled him out of bed couldn't be recaptured. "Boring, boring, boring" described every day. When he was honest with himself, Richard had to admit that a lot of his griping was about matters that really weren't that important. He had developed a talent for blow- ing insignificant incidents out of proportion and putting the blame on the company, a subordinate or a peer. Winthrop Locke is April's Legionnaire

Although Winthrop Locke is a Life Member of the Legion, he still pays his dues each year so it can be credited to another Legionnaire who cannot afford to pay. That's one measure of the man who is this month's Legionnaire. Win, as he is called by his fellow Legionnaires at William B. Dalton Post 137 in Holbrook, MA, is 85. Sixty-one of those years have been spent as a Legionnaire both at Post 137 and as a charter member of Post 38 in Lexington, MA. He has received numerous awards for his Legion work, including a cita- tion for his service to veterans.
