AN ABSTRACT OF THE THESIS OF Nicolas Evans for the degree of Master of Arts in English presented on June 2, 2017. Title: (Mis)representation & Postcolonial Masculinity: The Origins of Violence in the Plays and Films of Martin McDonagh. Abstract approved: ______________________________________________________ Neil R. Davison This thesis examines the postmodern confrontation of representation throughout the oeuvre of Martin McDonagh. I particularly look to his later body of work, which directly and self-reflexively confronts issues of artistic representation & masculinity, in order to gain a more nuanced understanding of his earliest and most controversial plays. In part, this thesis addresses misperceptions regarding The Leenane Trilogy, which was initially criticized for the plays’ shows of irreverence and use of caricature and cultural stereotypes. Rather than perpetuating propagandistic or offensive representations, my analysis explores how McDonagh uses affect and genre manipulation in order to parody artistic representation itself. Abstract The bachelor thesis explores the theme of violence in plays by Irish playwright Martin McDonagh. It focuses on two selected plays The Beauty Queen of Leenane and The Lonesome West both of which together with A Skull in Connemara create The Leenane Trilogy. The thesis focuses on two forms of violence that is physical and psychological abuse within a family. More specifically, violence between mother and daughter and between two brothers. In the introduction Martin McDonagh and his work are presented and also where in the Czech Republic we could have and can encounter his plays. In the second chapter the terms physical, psychological and domestic violence are defined. Furthermore, the basic characteristics of in- yer-face theatre, which McDonagh uses, are described. After that follows the essential part of the thesis which deals with the analysis of the two plays. It starts with The Beauty Queen of Leenane. Firstly, a short plot review is introduced followed by a comment on the characters and the setting. -

When he returns home he learns that his cat has in fact suffered a much more tragic and immediate fate. Padraic, a man whose mentally instability is legendary, is now intent on revenge at any costs. -

I did write film scripts, but they were shit. I even wrote a radio play, too, and it was shit. Plays were really my last option. The reason I didn’t write plays initially was because I thought theatre was the worst of all the art forms. —Martin McDonagh MARTIN McDONAGH TIMELINE 1970 Martin McDonagh is born on March 26 in southeast London. His mother is the former Mary Harte, originally from Killeenduff, Easky, County Sligo. She works as a chambermaid, and his father, John, who hails from Leitir Mealláin, Connemara, County Galway, is a construction worker. McDonagh and his brother John Michael, his only sibling and his elder by five years, will go on to spend many childhood summers in the west of Ireland, staying with their relatives. The young family lives on a council estate (public housing project) in Elephant and Castle, where half his block is occupied by Irish families. McDonagh describes the community: “the Kellys on one side of the house and the Caseys on the other, and the Dubliners’ songs blaring out all afternoon” (O’Hagan, 2015). They move up the road to Camberwell when McDonagh is still a child. 1984 McDonagh sees his first play, David Mamet’s American Buffalo at the Duke of York’s Theatre in the West End Theatre District of London. Al Pacino, his favorite film actor, plays Donny. -

Mathews © UCDscholarcast UCDscholarcast Paige Reynolds, Hollywood and Contemporary Irish Drama Paige Reynolds Hollywood and Contemporary Irish Drama Shortly after winning the 2007 Man Booker Prize for her novel The Gathering, the Irish author Anne Enright explained to a BBC Radio 4 Today audience that “When people pick up a book they may want something happy that will cheer them up. In that case they really shouldn’t pick up my book. It’s the intellectual equivalent of a Hollywood weepie.”1 The phrase “the intellectual equivalent of a Hollywood weepie” was immediately adopted by those seeking to characterize The Gathering, a novel that chronicles the attempts of its affluent Dublin heroine to grapple with her family history, her brother’s suicide, and her faltering marriage. By likening her novel to a Hollywood melodrama for smart people, Enright’s shorthand blithely breached commonly assumed divides between text and film, elite art and popular entertainments, Irish and American cultures. The casual nature of her characterization suggests an easy converse in the twenty-first century between the high culture of Irish literature and the low culture of popular Hollywood melodrama. In recent decades, the clear distinctions between high art and popular art have been challenged by innumerable literary and cultural critics. But the “divide” once presumed to separate high and low cultures has been bridged by figures in the Irish theatre since the start of the twentieth century – even in that bastion of corrupted popular art, Hollywood.2 Beginning in the early twentieth century, when D. -

Between the Lines of . The Cripple of Inishmaan For our second play of the 2011-2012 season, Riverside Theatre is excited to present Martin McDonagh’s The Cripple of Inishmaan, a dark comedy about a physically challenged young man who dreams of leaving his isolated Irish island to become a Hollywood star. We have many events coming up to help you immerse in the world of 1930’s Ireland. On Saturday, October 15 at 7:30 p.m., come to Riverside to see a performance by the Irish music ensemble The Beggarmen – whose recorded music will also be used in The Cripple of Inishmaan. Tickets are $20, $15 for youth and college students, and all proceeds will benefit Riverside Theatre. Our free Thursday Theatre talk will be October 20 at 5:30 p.m. Join us to get more information on the play from director Ron Clark and Ray Heffner, a scholar of Irish literature. Our Talkback Sunday will be October 30, immediately following the matinee performance. This is an opportunity to talk with the director and actors about the play. The art exhibit in the theatre’s lobby during the production will features photographs of rural Ireland by Iowa City photographer Thomas Weingeist. Playwright: Martin McDonagh Even though Martin McDonagh was born in 1970 and has only been writing plays since the mid- 1990’s, he is one of the most prolific, widely-produced playwrights to come out of the British Isles since the Elizabethan era. He is the only playwright other than Shakespeare to have four of his plays performed at once in London.
