Sound of Music 1965 Originally a Broadway Musical One of the most famous musicals of all time Written by Richard Rodgers (who wrote the music) and Oscar Hammerstein (who wrote the words to the songs) Set in Austria Based on the life of Maria Kutschera who was studying to be a religious sister at Nonnberg Abbey Maria can’t seem to follow the rules of the abbey, so she is sent away for the summer to be a governess of Captain Von Trapp’s 7 children She is sent away for a short while so she can find out what the world expects of her, and if she does, hopefully she can then learn to expect it of herself. She will be allowed return in the Fall. Captain Georg von Trapp was a highly decorated hero, Austrian Imperial Navy His wife Agatha died in 1922 of Scarlet fever leaving him the seven children Ever since Agatha’s death, the Captain runs house like one of his naval ships: marching orders, whistles, no playing, and NO MUSIC! The movie stars Julie Andrews as Maria and Christopher Plummer as Captain von Trapp The story takes place in the late 1930s when Germany is set to march into Austria and take it over. Hitler wanted to unify Austria and Germany. This unification was called the Anschluss. The Anschluss happened in 1938. Some Austrians were in favor of the Anschluss. Most were not. Captain Von Trapp was not in favor of the Anschluss. An Overture is played at the beginning of a musical. It is a short sample of the many songs that will be played in the musical that is about to start. Later in the musical, after an intermission, the Entract does basically the same thing to begin the second half of the show – it replays parts of the songs that were heard in the first half, and introduces some new ones that will be heard in the second half. .

Maria von Trapp gründet mit Hilfe des Hauskaplans einen Famili- enchor, und nimmt, ermuntert durch Lotte Leh- mann, 1937 an dem Volkssängerwettbewerb der Salzburger Festspiele statt, den sie gewinnen. Es folgt ein erstes Radiokonzert und das Angebot einer Konzertreise durch Amerika. 1938 erfolgt der Anschluss Österreichs an das Dritte Reich und der als kaisertreu bekannte Georg von Trapp befürchtet Repressalien, zumal er ein Konzert der Familie zu Hitlers Geburtstag abge- lehnt hatte. Er vermietet das Haus an einen geist- lichen Orden und emigriert mit der gesamten Familie und dem Chorleiter und Hauskaplan Georg Wasner in die USA. Mit dem Zug geht es über Italien, die Schweiz und Frankreich nach Eng- land, von dort mit dem Schiff nach New York. Maria is full of energy, passionate, country girl who has a charming but gawky, awkward physicality and personality, naive, naughty, witty, strong- minded, and tomboyish. Needs to have an obvious connection with children and an ability to relate at their level. Captain Georg Von Trapp- (Age: 40) SING / DANCE / ACT A retired very wealthy Austro-Hungarian Naval Lieutenant Commander, distinguished, active, handsome, highly organized and regimented, efficient and very smart. The Captain is a widower with seven children who is strong and firm with a hidden softness. The Mother Abbess of Nonnberg Abbey- (Age: 40+) SING / ACT A true big-hearted mother figure, loved, adored and respected. Baroness Elsa Schraeder- (Age: 40’s) SING / ACT A very wealthy widow, who is president of her late husband’s corporation. Elegant, sophisticated city person. Clever and canny and very much into making a good social arrangement Max Detwieler -(Age: 40-50) SING / DANCE / ACT A theatrical agent and First Secretary of Education and Culture- personal friend of von Trapp and a sort of uncle to his children. He is clever at his job, witty and charming though quite pushy to get what he wants. We are not sure whose side he is on until the last moment. Witt and humor personality of the show. Background of the Study Sound of Music movie is directed by Robert Wise and starring Julie Andrews in the lead role. This movie is published by Robert Wise Productions and 20th Century Fox Studios. It has 174 min long duration includes credit title of the movie maker. The movie version was filmed on location in Salzburg, Austria and Bavaria in Southern Germany, and also at the 20th Century Fox Studios in California. This movie released in 1965. The film is based on the Broadway musical The Sound of Music, with songs written by Richard Rodgers and Oscar Hammerstein II, and with the musical book written by the writing team of Howard Lindsay and Russel Crouse. The screenplay wrote by Ernest Lehman. It already played in Broadway in year 1959. Sound of Music also played in West End and Melbourne in year 1961. The musical originated with the book The Story of the Trapp Family Singers by Maria von Trapp. It contains many popular songs, including “Edelweiss”, “Do-Re-Mi”, “Sixteen Going on Seventeen”, and many more as well as the title song. According to the real Maria von Trapp, the writers of The Story of the Trapp Family Singers, the film presents a history of the von Trapp family which is not holly accurate.

“The Sound of Music” (1965) Added to the National Registry: 2017 Essay by Julia Hirsch (guest post)* “The Sound of Music” (1965) “The Sound of Music” remains one of the most popular American movies of all time and its musical compositions have become an iconic part of our American culture. The story of “Music’s” heroine, Maria von Trapp, has had many iterations. First, of course, was the real life of a spirited, rebellious and deeply complicated woman named Maria von Trapp. Orphaned at a young age, Maria became the ward of an abusive uncle where she rebelled by joining the Nonnberg Abbey in Salzburg, Austria. Maria’s athletic free spirit, however, didn’t mix with a staid traditional convent in which the nuns hadn’t looked out a window in 50 years! As a diversion, Maria was sent to the home of retired naval captain, Georg von Trapp, to be governess to his bedridden daughter. Soon Maria and the Captain fell in love and married. Maria became mother to his seven children, and she and the Captain had three more children of their own and, discovering that the family naturally harmonized together, Maria convinced them all to compete in singing festivals around Salzburg and Europe where they became well known as the “Trapp Family Singers.” Then Hitler invaded Austria, and the Captain was ordered to return to naval service. Unable to work under the Third Reich, the Captain and Maria, with their ten children in tow (one in utero), escaped Austria and eventually moved to America where they continued their singing career.

The Sound of Music In 1930's Austria, a young woman named Maria is failing miserably in her attempts to become a nun. When the Navy captain Georg Von Trapp writes to the convent asking for a governess that can handle his seven mischievous children, Maria is given the job. The Captain's wife is dead, and he is often away, and runs the household as strictly as he does the ships he sails on. The children are unhappy and resentful of the governesses that their father keeps hiring, and have managed to run each of them off one by one. When Maria arrives, she is initially met with the same hostility, but her kindness, understanding, and sense of fun soon draws them to her and brings some much-needed joy into all their lives -- including the Captain's. Eventually he and Maria find themselves falling in love, even though Georg is already engaged to a Baroness and Maria is still a postulant. The romance makes them both start questioning the decisions they have made. Their personal conflicts soon become overshadowed, however, by world events. Austria is about to come under the control of Germany, and the Captain may soon find himself drafted into the German navy and forced to fight against his own country. Maria had longed to be a nun since she was a young girl, yet when she became old enough discovered that it wasn't at all what she thought. Often in trouble and doing the wrong things, Maria is sent to the house of a retired naval captain, named Captain Von Trapp, to care for his children.
