The season opens with Rupert Goold’s production of Romeo and Juliet and runs in repertoire to 5 February next year, with Michael Boyd’s production of Antony and Cleopatra; The Winter’s Tale directed by David Farr; Julius Caesar directed by Lucy Bailey; As You Like It, directed by Michael Boyd; and David Farr’s King Lear (see end of release for production details at a glance). All six productions have been developed throughout their time in the repertoire and are revised and re-rehearsed with each revival in Stratford, Newcastle, London and finally for next year’s residency in New York. The season also includes the RSC’s two recent Young People’s Shakespeare (YPS) productions created especially for children and families, and inspired by the Stand Up For Shakespeare campaign which calls for more children and young people to See Shakespeare Live, Start Shakespeare Earlier and Do Shakespeare on their Feet – Hamlet, directed by Tarell Alvin McCraney, and The Comedy of Errors (in association with Told by an Idiot), directed by Paul Hunter.

    Ruth Paskins Shakespeare and Selected Dramatists of his Time 16-03-09 How far is ‘sexuality’ the motive and/or the means for the enactment of villainy in Shakespeare’s Titus Andronicus, Richard III, and Othello, and to what degree is this attractive? The iconic male ‘villains’ of Shakespeare’s works have proved subjects of fascination for generations of theatregoers. This essay will explore the nature of this ‘fascination’ through the medium of ‘sexuality’ as employed by Aaron the Moor (Titus), Richard Gloucester (Richard III) and Iago (Othello). The legacy of the dramatic Vice, the ‘single representative figure of evil’ (Hammond, Anthony 101) from the morality play is key to the examination and understanding of these figures. The characteristics shared by these villains; ‘self-explanation and soliloquy,’ ‘long avoidance, but ultimate suffering of, punishment’ and ‘various signs of depravity such as boasting and conceit, enjoyment of power, immoral sexuality’ (Hammond 101 [emphasis mine]), are a direct borrowing from this figure of Vice. Despite, or perhaps because of his total moral and social depravity, the Vice offered great dramatic opportunities for an actor, and became the ‘star part’, his entrance eagerly anticipated by the audience. This popularity peaked mid-century until around 1580 when, with the advent of sophisticated plots and characters, the role of the Vice diminished in importance (Hammond 100). The sixteenth century audience’s fascination with this manifestation of ‘evil’, however, established a precedent for the ‘attraction’ of, and to, the villain in play and performance texts, an attraction still apparent in popular culture today. The source of this attraction is as mysterious and subjective as the meaning of ‘attraction’ itself.

Performances will run from 2 – 25 February 2017, with a national press night on Tuesday 7 February. Bernarda’s husband is dead. Now she alone rules her household and the lives of her five daughters. A period of eight years mourning will be observed without contact with the outside world and the men who might bring them ruin.     FALOCCO, JOE, Ph.D. Elizabethan Staging in the Twentieth Century: Theatrical Practice and Cultural Context. (2006) Directed by Russ McDonald. 433 pp. This study examines some of the major figures involved in the rediscovery of early modern staging conventions. Despite the wide variety of approaches employed by William Poel, Nugent Monck, Tyrone Guthrie, and the founders of the new Globe, I perceive a common philosophical underpinning to their endeavors. Rather than indulging in archaism for its own sake, they looked backward in a progressive attempt to address the challenges of the twentieth century. My history begins with an introduction in which I establish the ideological position of the Elizabethan revival as the twentieth-century heir to Pre-Raphaelitism. The first chapter is on William Poel and urges a reexamination of the conventional view of Poel as an antiquarian crank. I then devote chapters to Harley Granville Barker and Nugent Monck, both of whom began their careers with Poel. Barker’s critical writing, I argue, has been largely responsible for the Elizabethan revival’s reputation as an academic and literary phenomenon. Monck, on the other hand, took the first tentative steps toward an architectural reimagining of twentieth-century performance spaces, an advance which led to Tyrone Guthrie’s triumphs in Elizabethan staging. Guthrie learned from Monck and Barker as these men had learned from Poel. This lineage of influence, however, did not directly extend to the new Globe. The Globe also differs from the subjects of my other chapters because it doesn’t represent the effort of a single practitioner but instead incorporates the contributions of a group of scholars and architects.
