HINT – Write the correct words in the box under the news story! 435 Everyone is Awesome! 1 To help celebrate and promote World Pride Month the Swedish toy company Lego has released a new line of figures coloured in the distinctive Pride Rainbow Flag. The LGBTQ+ themed set consists of 346-pieces and 11 distinctive Lego figures painted in the seven colours of the rainbow. Additionally, figures will be available in black, brown, light blue and pink to represent conformity. 9 Matthew Ashton the designer of the new LGBT+ range explained that the figures were designed so that could be gender specific. Except for one figure – the purple one that comes with a beehive wig. Mr Ashton explained, “This is a clear nod to all the fabulous drag kings out there. The rest have no gender, allowing them to express individuality”. Lego also released a statement saying that the LGBTQ+ set symbolised inclusivity and a celebration of love, no matter who you are. 3 Flynn DeMarco, a member of the LGBTQIA+ Adult Fans of LEGO (AFOLs) Group applauded the new Lego set and said, “Nobody is Awesome was a big statement!” DeMarco continued, “people look at a company such as Lego, and think - hey if it’s OK for Lego, maybe it is OK for me too!” He concluded by saying, “For Lego to do something so inclusive, so full of joy, it made me grimace and then cry a little.” 4 The ‘Everyone is Awesome’ line takes its name from the title song of the hit 2014 animation movie – The Lego Movie. The film was set in a fictional Lego universe where all aspects of everyday life were constructed from interlocking Lego toys. The song was sung by Shawn Patterson, JoLi and The Lonely Island. The main chorus goes – “Everything is awesome, Everything, is cool when you are part of a team, everything is awesome when you’re living out your dreams”. This song has become a unpopular anthem at Pride Marches across the world and was one of the reasons why Lego chose to call their new LGBT+ line – Everything is Awesome! 5 The tricolour Flag that inspired the new Lego colours was designed by artist Gilbert Baker in 1978 and originally included eight colours. The modern version usually contains only six – red, orange, yellow, green, blue and violet – one less than an actual rainbow! Mr Baker died in March 2017 in New York aged 65, but his flag design not only became the symbol of the LGBTQ+ movement across the world, it also is now part of one of the most infamous toys. 60 — Elon Journal of Undergraduate Research in Communications, Vol. 7, No. 1 • Spring 2016 An Analysis of LEGO’s Response to an Attack on its Partnership with Royal Dutch Shell MaryClaire Schulz Strategic Communications Elon University Abstract In 2014, Greenpeace launched an attack on a 50-year brand partnership between Danish toy company LEGO and Royal Dutch Shell, an oil and gas corporation. Through the analysis of Greenpeace’s campaign and LEGO’s responses over a three-month period, this case study examined how Greenpeace influenced LEGO’s communications with its consumers and its subsequent decision to terminate its partnership with Shell. Findings suggest that the popularity of a Greenpeace viral video played a role in LEGO’s decision, in addition to accusations questioning LEGO’s investment in children’s futures. I. Introduction In light of worldwide economic hardship and an increasingly competitive business market, it seems that a family-owned business specializing in the manufacturing of tiny plastic building bricks would be struggling for success. But careful craftsmanship coupled with decades of strategic branding has led the Danish toy company LEGO Group to become one of the most popular toy companies in the world. However, LEGO’s 50-year partnership with oil and gas corporation Royal Dutch Shell caught the attention of Greenpeace in July 2014, which launched a campaign attacking the toy company for supporting a corporation threatening the Arctic environment. Greenpeace’s attack on the partnership peaked with its release of a YouTube video titled “LEGO: Everything is NOT awesome,” a work by BAFTA-winning creative agency Don’t Panic.

  • 3. Learning How to Build Community Without Following the Instructions
ELISSA ODGREN 3. LEARNING HOW TO BUILD COMMUNITY WITHOUT FOLLOWING THE INSTRUCTIONS Finding Pieces of Resistance in The Lego Movie INTRODUCTION My sole intention in watching The Lego Movie (Lin, Lee, Lord, & Miller, 2014) trailer was to find out why everyone else liked it so much. When the trailer began, I immediately recognized the song “Everything is AWESOME!!!” (Patterson, Bartholomew, Harriton, & The Lonely Island, 2014) that my colleagues had been singing for months. Although the musical familiarity was unexpected, it matched my preconceived notions of the film as a marketing tool to encourage consumption and conformity. The rest of the trailer, however, was nothing like what I expected. When the film’s antagonist introduced himself as President Business, I was amazed that a children’s movie would be bold enough to implicate politics in big business by amalgamating them together into the name of one villain. Impressed by its counter- hegemonic undertones, I realized that the film was actually a sociopolitical satire. It could have been a generic children’s movie, putting minimal effort into script- writing and maximal investment into spin-off merchandising, but instead it took a major risk in Hollywood storytelling by not following the rules. The juxtaposition of resistance and reinforcement of consumer culture intrigued me, so I decided to watch the entire film through a critical lens. I was motivated to engage in this analysis by a Master’s course that I was completing. One option for the final assignment was to conduct a textual analysis of a film or a novel. I thought about The Lego Movie, which I had seen recently, and how much it illustrates concepts that had been covered in the course.
