Dear Student,

Congratulations on your decision to study abroad at the through IFSA! This information serves to help you decide which Oxford is right for you.

In case you did not already know, Oxford is a part of the prestigious Russell Group of major research universities in the United Kingdom. Oxford runs on a tutorial system which is quite different from the U.S. education system and is ideal for hard-working, independent students who are passionate about academics and crave an intellectual challenge.

The University of Oxford is a federation of individual and while all of the colleges operate under the auspices of the University of Oxford, each college is self-governing with its own tutors, grounds, clubs, and residence . As such, students apply to one individual college, rather than the university, and often times Oxford students identify more with their particular college, rather than the University itself. For a virtual tour of Oxford, click here. In addition to students’ individual college faculties, students also have access to university wide lectures, sports, clubs, and facilities as well such as the Bodleian Library.

A description of each college follows. Please read and consider each college as this will help us make sure you are sorted into the right college for your best chance at admissions and success at Oxford! If you have questions about the college selection process or Oxford in general, please feel free to contact an IFSA Oxford program advisor.

College description Regent’s Park grew out of a Baptist tradition – and are thus Dissenters – which is why the college has always prided itself on providing education to those historically excluded from university education - it was one of the first to admit women; and it was the first college to fly the rainbow flag. It says grace in English rather than Latin, which was prompted by its desire to be inclusive of all as few students in our state school system (where 95% of all students go) learn Latin – it is usually only those in the private schools that are given this opportunity. The college still trains men and women for ordination and ministry in the Baptist tradition.

It has one of the finest JCR’s in all of Oxford, and Regent’s Park is located just behind the Ahsmolean Museum. IFSA students at Regent’s Park have the most centrally-located housing in Oxford. The college has a reputation as being one of the most friendly and welcoming colleges in Oxford – largely due to its size, but also because of its socially minded outlook.
