NucLear D iscourse ancI Its D iscontents, or, ApocAlypsE Now or Never Jean BEThkE ElskrAiN Human beings think most often in images; a terrible or delightful picture comes into our minds and then we seek to find words to express it, to capture it, to make it somehow manageable. Thus it is with the possibility of nuclear war. Our images are fixed. The scenes of utter destruction at Hiroshima and Nagasaki; two cities laid waste; people disappeared, remaining as shadows on cement or persisting in a terrible and painful twilight zone of lingering death from radiation. Or, even years later, moving through the world carrying within them a perceived taint, a threat to themselves and others: “I am one who has been touched in the most frightening way by the most horrible sort of weapon.” I taught a class at the University of Massachusetts/Amherst for five years called “Issues of War and Peace in a Nuclear Age.” Inevitably, we would arrive at the section of the course that required a discussion of the dropping of the atomic bombs in World War 2. -
Ethics for Digital Journalists
ETHICS FOR DIGITAL JOURNALISTS The rapid growth of online media has led to new complications in journalism ethics and practice. While traditional ethical principles may not fundamentally change when information is disseminated online, applying them across platforms has become more challenging as new kinds of interactions develop between jour- nalists and audiences. In Ethics for Digital Journalists , Lawrie Zion and David Craig draw together the international expertise and experience of journalists and scholars who have all been part of the process of shaping best practices in digital journalism. Drawing on contemporary events and controversies like the Boston Marathon bombing and the Arab Spring, the authors examine emerging best practices in everything from transparency and verifi cation to aggregation, collaboration, live blogging, tweet- ing, and the challenges of digital narratives. At a time when questions of ethics and practice are challenged and subject to intense debate, this book is designed to provide students and practitioners with the insights and skills to realize their potential as professionals. Lawrie Zion is an Associate Professor of Journalism at La Trobe University in Melbourne, Australia, and editor-in-chief of the online magazine upstart. He has worked as a broadcaster with the Australian Broadcasting Corporation and as a fi lm journalist for a range of print publications. He wrote and researched the 2007 documentary The Sounds of Aus , which tells the story of the Australian accent. David Craig is a Professor of Journalism and Associate Dean at the University of Oklahoma in the United States. A former newspaper copy editor, he is the author of Excellence in Online Journalism: Exploring Current Practices in an Evolving Environ- ment and The Ethics of the Story: Using Narrative Techniques Responsibly in Journalism . -

INTRODUCTION THE PULITZER PRIZES FOR INTERNATIONAL REPORTING IN THE THIRD PHASE OF THEIR DEVELOPMENT, 1963-1977 Heinz-Dietrich Fischer The rivalry between the U.S.A. and the U.S.S.R. having shifted, in part, to predomi- nance in the fields of space-travel and satellites in the upcoming space age, thus opening a new dimension in the Cold War,1 there were still existing other controversial issues in policy and journalism. "While the colorful space competition held the forefront of public atten- tion," Hohenberg remarks, "the trained diplomatic correspondents of the major newspa- pers and wire services in the West carried on almost alone the difficult and unpopular East- West negotiations to achieve atomic control and regulation and reduction of armaments. The public seemed to want to ignore the hard fact that rockets capable of boosting people into orbit for prolonged periods could also deliver atomic warheads to any part of the earth. It continued, therefore, to be the task of the responsible press to assign competent and highly trained correspondents to this forbidding subject. They did not have the glamor of TV or the excitement of a space shot to focus public attention on their work. Theirs was the responsibility of obliging editors to publish material that was complicated and not at all easy for an indifferent public to grasp. It had to be done by abandoning the familiar cliches of journalism in favor of the care and the art of the superior historian .. On such an assignment, no correspondent was a 'foreign' correspondent. The term was outdated. -

Home » Opinion » Article Forget polling voters, just ask the punters John Garnaut February 9, 2007 THIS week three years ago, David Cox, Labor's slightly dishevelled member for the Adelaide seat of Kingston, stopped to contemplate his fortune in the parliamentary corridor. His party had surged to a 6 percentage point lead in the opinion polls, after years of wretched irrelevance. Publicly, Labor had been talking with caution and humility; privately it was a different story. Cox, a hard-headed economist and strategist, allowed a schoolboy grin to spread across his usually deadpan face. "It's amaaaaazing," he said. That was February 2004. Nine months later, voters threw Cox out of his seat and gave his party another thrashing. Now, Labor is led by a cautious workhorse with none of Mark Latham's fissile characteristics. John Howard has aged three years; and with Iraq, climate change and perhaps interest rates, the times that famously suited him appear to have shifted. Labor's opinion poll lead is now 10 points, not six. Yet there is none of the premature celebration that marked Labor three years ago, and only a hint of the panic that rippled through the Coalition. Chastened by their Latham exuberance, press gallery reporters are falling over themselves to show sagacious restraint and predict a Howard comeback. The pundits now know better than to be swept around by opinion polls. As economists such as Justin Wolfers and Andrew Leigh have shown, polls can have almost zero predictive value so far out from an election. -

[email protected] Abstract: The digital revolution that began in the twentieth century and continues today has profound and surprising implications for the role of the humanities in higher education. Three prominent characteristics of the twenty-first century — ubiquitous technology, global interaction, and relentless change — require a new approach to the education that fosters technological expertise, communication across boundaries of language and culture, and creative response to new challenges and opportunities. This situation creates new opportunities for a revitalized role of the humanities in education that combines critical with creative thought and emphasizes communication in a world connected by interactive technology. Literary translation can be a key contributor to the development and implementation of a humanities curriculum for the modern world designed to educate technologically sophisticated, innovative “citizens of the world.” This paper has two sections. The first section sets a conceptual framework; the second suggests ways to apply translation to achieve this 1 goal: both employing translation in a traditional manner and attempting to expand its meaning and implications. A N Smith Lecture in Journalism The University of Melbourne __________________________________________________________________ Do newspapers have a future? And how long is that future? Michael Gawenda Thank you all for coming and thank you Vice Chancellor Glyn Davis for asking me to give this lecture. I am in the company of some very distinguished people who have given the A.N. Smith lecture in the past. I hope I can be somewhere near as interesting and provocative as some of them were. I want to start with a couple of quotes from dead old white men, a demographic I am bound, sooner or later, to join. That’s my future taken care of. I state the obvious of course, but do so because how journalists and editors like me regard the future of newspapers depends on how much of a future we ourselves have--in newspapers and in life. Most these quotes come from books and articles I have not read. They are quotes I have found by using the Google search engine. The Google search engine has now become a widespread research tool in journalism. The effects are not always benign. Still, I have, at times, succumbed to its seductiveness. In 1961, the American playwright Arthur Miller said: `A good newspaper, I suppose, is a nation talking to itself.’ I think that with a small edit, the sort a sub- editor of a certain type could easily perform, this Miller attempt at wisdom about newspapers could have said something that would be as true today as it would have been almost a half century ago : `A bad newspaper, I suppose, is a newspaper talking to itself’. -

Welcome to English Language and Composition! We are so excited for what next year has in store in AP Lang. Contained in this packet is all the information you need to know about your summer reading homework, and what you can expect in August. This course, due to our non-fiction and rhetorical focus, is structured very differently than the English classes you might be used to, but we know you are up for the challenge. Don’t get overwhelmed. Most of what’s contained here are resources to help you, not the assignments themselves. You got this! It’s going to be a great year! To give you some context, according to College Board, “The AP English Language and Composition course focuses on the development and revision of evidence-based analytic and argumentative writing and the rhetorical analysis of non-fiction texts.” Sounds fun, right!? One of the best ways that we can prepare you for the class over the summer is to make sure we have some common language when it comes to the art of persuasion. That’s why our summer reading selection is chapters 1-18 of Thank You for Arguing Third Edition by Jay Heinrichs. (ISBN #: 978-0804189934) The book perfectly “front loads” fundamental information essential to understanding the complexities of rhetoric. Please make sure you purchase the third edition (Publication Date: 2017). This book has been specifically revised with the AP Lang student in mind. Heinrichs consistently uses “pop culture” and engaging entertainment mediums to make rhetoric applicable to students’ daily lives. He references historical rhetoric, both old and new, in order to reveal how rhetorical communication shapes the course of history. -
