Eiffel Tower Viewing Deck Fact Sheet OVERVIEW: Rise above the frenzy of the Strip at one of Las Vegas’ premier attractions with amazing views. An icon of the city skyline, the high-altitude attraction is located 46 stories up and is a half-scale replica of the world-famous Paris, France landmark. The viewing deck features 360-degree city views and knowledgeable Ambassadors point out Las Vegas landmarks. The views of the bright, colorful lights are unmatched. FACTS: • Height: 541 feet, 164.6 meters • Weight: 5000 tons of wielded steel • Cost: $28 Million • Opened: September 1, 1999 • Construction time: 18 months HISTORY: Ground broke for the Eiffel Tower Viewing Deck at Paris Las Vegas on April 17, 1997. It officially opened September 1, 1999. When the scale model of the Eiffel Tower was built, it was planned to be full scale, but the airport was too close and the tower had to be shrunk. The scale is approximately one half. The Eiffel Tower is 541 feet tall, 164.6 meters. It is made up of 5000 tons of wielded steel and is tallest replica of the original Eiffel Tower to date. The observation deck stands at 460 feet high. A custom designed crane, the largest in the United States, was needed to assist in construction. It cost $28 million to construct the half scale replica of the original and took 18 months to complete. FOLLOW GUS! Children’s tour of the Eiffel Tower – Pedagogical file 5 The Tower… made of iron and rivets Industrialization During the 19th century progress made in the world of metallurgy brought along industrial development. Manufacturing iron and steel enabled to build railways (railway tracks and engines), factories, stations, bridges, markets, department stores. From the second half of this century, engineers such as Eiffel became very knowledgeable in the use of metallic frameworks and structures that are lighter than stone or concrete. 1803: Construction of the Pont des Arts in Paris, in cast iron. 1853: Construction of the Paris covered market with a metallic structure that adds beauty to the building. The Pompey factory An iron Tower The Eiffel Tower is made of puddled iron. This type of iron is obtained by mixing liquid hot iron and the result is iron of a fibrous texture obtained through the dissociation of carbon and impurities from the cristallographic structure. Hammering and rolling complete the preparation of this highly resistant iron. All of these operations were carried out in factories set up near the iron mines, especially in the Lorraine region. The project is accurate to the millimetre In Eiffel’s workshops, some twenty engineers and thirty designers made 5,329 drawings that enabled about one hundred workers to assemble the various metallic parts in the workshops located in Levallois-Peret (West of Paris) as early as June 1887. These metallic parts measured between just a few millimetres for the rivets and various metres for the puddled iron beams manufactured in the steelworks of Pompey, in the Lorraine department.

The jardins du Trocadéro (Gardens of the Trocadero) The gardens were created for the universal exhibition of 1878. Jean-Charles Alphand (structural engineer who worked a lot for Paris embellishment) staged waterfalls, plants, rocks and small paths. They were restructured in 1937 at the same time as the palais de Chaillot. The gardens slope gently down to the Seine with a stunning view over the Eiffel Tower. Numerous sculptures dating back to the 1930s punctuate the setting. They are so many stone and bronze women, men, gods, animals... Do not try to find coherence between the style and the theme because there is none.
