SCNA Newsletter for March 2016 Page 4 of 10 OTHER NUDIST NEWS LUPIN PLEADS “NO CONTEST” IN WATER THEFT CASE 02/02/2016 - The San Jose Mercury News reported the owner of Lupin Lodge in Los Gatos has plead “no contest” to charges of stealing water from nearby Hendry Creek, located on county land, and diverting it to her drought-stricken, clothing-optional .” Prosecutors said co-owners Lori Kay Stout and the late Glyn Stout piped water from Hendry's Creek despite numerous warnings to stop. Lori Kay Stout was sentenced to probation and 100 hours of community . "This appropriate sentence underscores that individuals and cannot simply take what they want from their neighbors without permission or consequence." A statement from Lori Kay Stout on behalf of Lupin said the company had done nothing wrong. "Lupin has historically and lawfully used upstream Hendry's Creek water that flows through Lupin's property," the statement said. The case was settled at the urging of the corporation's attorney after the unexpected death of Stout's husband and co- owner, Glyn Stout, in November, according to the statement. "Now that we have expeditiously put this case behind without incurring a huge legal expense for a small family that is needed to go further with this case, we can focus on our upcoming season and move on to the celebration of our 81st anniversary," the statement said. The Lupin statement said the resort now has an abundance of water despite the ongoing drought. We don't expect to have water problems in the foreseeable future." NUDISTS REMEMBER SCALIA FOR ANTI-NUDITY CASE Supreme Court Justice Antonin Scalia, who died a few weeks ago, was known for his sharp tongue and piercing pen. Nudists may also remember the 79-year-old jurist for an important opinion concerning nudism in 1991. In Barnes v. Glen Theatre the court ruled 5-4 that “States have the authority and right to regulate and/or ban nudity, as it is in the interests of both the government and society to preserve morality by statute. Nudity is not protected under the first amendment.” In his concurring opinion with the majority, Scalia reasoned that “the moral opposition to nudity supplies a rational basis for its prohibition." Because of this decision, nudists no longer have the legal right to claim nudity is a protected first amendment freedom. So much for being an “originalist.”

SCNA Newsletter for March 2016 Page 8 of 10 TRAVEL CORNER MY BARE NECESSITIES NUDE CRUISE (AND MORE) By Gary Mussell In December, Haulover’s Beach Mom Shirley Mason telephoned me to ask if I wanted her ticket for the Bare Necessities cruise in February. Never having been on a cruise I immediately said yes even though it was for only one person and Patty would be left behind (she said it was ok if I went alone). I had to scramble to renew my and make airplane reservations, but somehow I got through all the preliminaries and at noon on February 6, I found myself boarding the Celebrity Constellation in Port Everglades, Ft. Lauderdale, Florida. This is a huge ship! Over 965 feet long, 12 levels high and holding over 2,000 passengers, it immediately brought visions of The Poseidon Adventure to mind as I went through customs and crossed the gangplank. Later in the week, the Captain hosted a talk and slideshow showing it cost over a billion dollars to build. Nevertheless, the first day at sea there was a mandatory lifeboat drill which was fun, actually, as I got to meet a lot of new people as we waited for the all clear. I discovered most of the passengers had been on several of the nude cruises before, some as many as eight. Some were owners of businesses or managers in large corporations eager to spend their children’s inheritance on themselves. Not so many middle class worker bees can afford the cruise fee, the airfare, and all the extras (like drink packages and island excursion trips) that the ship eagerly wants you to buy once you are on board. There is a 24-hour food court (you name the , they have it!) plus one really nice restaurant included in your cruise ticket, but there are also several upper-end onboard that cost a little extra. Some (but not all) spa services are included. There is a theater with a different show and theme every night from Mardi Gras to Cowboys to the circus. And just in case you have extra cash in your pocket, there is the casino that ran constantly when we were not in port. Actually, no cash was ever needed on board. We all wore blue “SeaPass” cards on lanyards around our necks. These little blue credit cards instantly added purchases to our final bill without so much as a thought. We used them as identification (along with a photo ID) to leave the ship and return whenever we were in port, although on land the locals demanded regular greenbacks or else the currency of the island. In the city of Port de France, Martinique, this meant Euros. The afternoon we were there, I saw the Fat Tuesday parade and celebration (photo below). Almost everyone wore red with devil horns and had a grand time dancing in the street in decorative costumes and bands playing a wide assortment of reggae-rhythm drums. Many of the other ports where we landed for one-day visits appear to survive on tourists like us, and the taxis and tour guides make sure we stop to shop at their friend’s stores. Most shops held all the touristy merchandise and clothing one could ever want to buy. After all, if I was spending my grandkid’s inheritance the least I could do is bring them home a jewelry bauble or T-shirt. In San Juan, Puerto Rico and Samana, Dominican Republic, the dominant language was Spanish but the locals were more than happy to speak English when you asked for directions or advice on where to eat. San Juan was the only real city on our tour, with bustling traffic navigating its narrow and colorful . I would like to have spent a week there instead of just the day. Samana was much less developed and crowded with motorbikes. I hired a taxi to show me around and I soon learned that driving on the right side of the road was a suggestion not the law. I don’t know how many near misses we had with the locals on their bikes but somehow people knew to get out of the way moments before they would have been killed. Grand Turk Island is the home of the original Jimmy Margaritaville restaurant (parrot photo below)and tourist village. Of course, I had to have there. Had a great and a drink glass! Coco Cay, our last stop in the Bahamas is a private island owned by the cruise company so we could go naked on shore everywhere but in the village. They prepared a big BBQ lunch for us and we planned to lay out among the rows and rows of beach chairs and umbrellas, splashing in the Caribbean waters wearing just a smile. But near-gale-force winds suddenly came up and blew the sand all over our sunscreen-lathered bodies so that we were feeling like breaded chicken. Most passengers, disappointed, returned to the ship, and instead spent the rest of the afternoon on Deck 10 enjoying the ship’s three swimming pools and six Jacuzzi’s. Ah yes, life is so hard sometimes! The only down moment was leaving the ship on the 11th day, as a sudden tornado sighting, lightning, and torrential rain hit Ft. Lauderdale forced us to stay on the ship an extra 3 hours as the city lost power and they could not extend the gang planks nor operate the TSA/Customs machines. Just as we were starting to feel like Katrina victims they said we could disembark. If you ever get the chance to take a clothing-optional cruise, by all means do it! If for no other reason than to spend some of your grandchildren’s inheritance. Buy them a T-shirt instead and they may even forgive you.

SCNA Newsletter for March 2016 Page 9 of 10 VISITING HAULOVER BEACH After leaving the boat, I rented a car and drove south to Miami to visit my friends Shirley and Richard Mason and to stay with them for a few days. They are the founders of the world-famous nude Haulover Beach, and Shirley took me over for a tour. Although it was a Wednesday, we estimated there were about two thousand people on the sand and it wasn’t even that crowded. Shirley said mid-summer that might get as many as ten thousand nudists on any particular day. The beach is much deeper than I had imagined, and separated from view of the main highway running parallel by a large sandbar and foliage. The tall row of just to the north have Donald Trump’s name on them but Shirley says the operators there never give her any problems as many of their guests are Europeans who come especially to visit Haulover. Indeed, a symbiotic relationship! Shirley estimates that the tourists and parking fees bring in nearly a billion dollars a year to the Miami economy. The South Florida Free Beaches Association, aka Shirley’s team, has a series of thatched-roof stations down the beach where they distribute information and sell . The beach seems to stretch forever down the sand until you reach the short fence separating it from the textile beaches on both sides. With well- defined signage, nobody ever complains about the clothing-optional status of this stretch of sand. Two tunnels under the main highway give visitors direct access from the parking lot on the other side. There is a concession stand (owned by someone else) midway on the quarter-mile beach, selling overpriced hot dogs, , and drinks. While there, Shirley introduced me to several of her Beach Ambassador team and we spent several hours comparing notes on our respective West Coast – East Coast issues in managing clothing-optional beaches and protecting them from greedy developers or opportunistic politicians. It was a very productive visit for all concerned. MID-WINTER AANR MEETING INTRODUCES NEW EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR TO TRUSTEES As long as I was in Florida, I decided to drive the 250 miles upstate to Orlando and Kissimmee to visit the AANR headquarters for the first time. The office is much smaller than I imagined it, a multi-room operation in a strip mall in the older part of town. It was nice to finally meet face-to-face the people I had spoken to so often by telephone these past few years. I then drove south about 20 miles to Cypress Cove, one of the premier nudist in Florida. The park was totally sold out, crammed with RVs and campers as the so-called “sun bird” population from the northern states always migrates to Florida each winter. The Cove has some of the best facilities in the country including a first class restaurant, a shop if you just want a hamburger or hot dog, several tennis and pickleball courts, water volleyball, and a couple of very busy swimming pools and Jacuzzis. Cypress Cove was also the location of the triannual AANR Trustee board meeting, where all the people we elect get together to discuss policy. The two-day meeting (Feb. 19-20) was efficiently run by AANR President Bev Price. It was much more harmonious than I had expected with each trustee giving very professional reports on their assigned area of expertise from Marketing to Public Relations to to Finance, etc. A highlight of the meeting was Bev introducing the new Executive Director for the organization Dan Whicker, who will start on March 1. I was able to talk with him for a few minutes later in the swimming pool. He is a young man, with a bachelor's degree is in Business/Marketing. Seems like a good fit. I wish him good luck and success coordinating the efforts of the AANR office. As Vice President of the Western Region I was invited to attend a separate meeting of all the Regional Presidents, where subjects not on the Trustee agenda were discussed. What a privilege it was to meet some of the great minds in the Naturist Movement! The last night there was a dinner for AANR in the restaurant. I arrived early, so I went into the where the residents were playing a form of Trivial Pursuit. With some luck I got picked to be one of the contestants and I won the game! Prize: my dinner that night was free. Photo courtesy of Gary Spangler, used with permission. I also got to visit the American Nudist Research Library (ANRL), which is sited at Cypress Cove and contains the records of the naturist movement back to the 1920s. I found over twenty years of Elysium Field’s JOTS magazines here, bound in books among the thousands of other club records that line the library walls. SCNA also has some of its archive stored here for future historians to ponder. The library is scanning all paper records to make them digital and thereby accessible to researchers across the country. They are also videotaping interviews with as many of the older pioneers so their memories and stories will be preserved. A very worthwhile tax-deductible contribution should you want to make a donation at http://www.anrl.org/. Then, after 18 amazing days, I flew home. There is so much more than I could fit into this article. Ask me sometime about watching the Super Bowl in a theater with 1500 screaming naked fans body painted in their team’s colors.
