Marketing News – Crossing Borders a a ¿s? CROSSING BORDERS From top 40 stations to reality TV, country music is everywhere, and its fans are, too—spanning all ages, socioeconomic levels and areas of the U.S., as well as points farther afield. The music genre presents a unique mass-marketing opportunity and more leading brands are signing on. BY CHRISTINE BIRKNER | SENIOR STAFF WRITER [email protected] APRIL 2014 | MARKETING NEWS 27 n November 2013, Foo Fighters front man Dave Grohl brought down the house at the I Country Music Association Awards while sharing the stage with the Zac Brown Band, one of country music’s top-selling acts. It was an unlikely pairing and the resulting sound definitely wasn’t your grandpa’s country music, but the performance was emblematic of a new era for the country music genre— and for its fan base. Country music now attracts fans from well north of the Mason- Dixon Line, and from customer segments that span the cultural and socioeconomic spectrums, making the country music audience an attractive demographic for mainstream marketers. “The stereotypes about the country music listener are that they’re rural, they’re downscale and they’re not very tech-savvy, but our research shows that that’s all bunk,” says Chris Ackerman, vice president of Morrisville, N.C.-based Coleman Insights, a media research firm that focuses on the radio and music industries. “This audience is largely suburban, a mix of white- and blue-collar, and a lot more affluent than even the country industry itself thought. They’re a much more attractive target for marketers than might have been perceived.” A WHOLE NEW COUNTRY Country music is having a pop-culture moment. Country artists Blake Shelton and Keith Urban act as ambassadors for the genre every week on NBC’s The Voice and Fox’s American Idol, respectively, while country- themed shows such as ABC’s drama Nashville and reality shows like A&E’s Crazy Hearts Nashville and TNT’s Private Lives of Nashville Wives air in primetime. In December 2013, Rolling Stone announced plans to launch country-centric offerings—a new website and a standalone country-themed print issue—and to open an editorial office in Nashville. “There’s a huge opportunity for us to expand the Rolling Stone consumer base by extending into country music,” Chris McLoughlin, Rolling Stone’s publisher, told Ad Age. • Deana Carter Danny Myrick
Deana Carter DEANA CARTER, the daughter of famed studio guitarist and producer Fred Carter, Jr., grew up surrounded by musical greats, including Willie Nelson, Bob Dylan, Waylon Jennings, and Simon & Garfunkel. She developed her songwriting skills at writer’s nights throughout Nashville, but her real break came when one of her demo tapes fell into the hands of Willie Nelson, who remembered Deana as a child. Impressed with how she’d grown as a songwriter, Nelson asked Deana to perform along with John Mellencamp, Kris Kristofferson, and Neil Young, as the only female solo artist to appear at Farm Aid VII in 1994. Her 1996 debut album Did I Shave My Legs for This? quickly climbed to the top of both the country and pop charts, quickly achieving multi-platinum status. "Strawberry Wine,” the first single from the album, was awarded CMA's 1997 Single of the Year. Seven albums and a decade later, Deana is still writing and producing for both the pop/rock and country markets when not on the road touring. Her superstar success continues to be evident. Her chart topper “You & Tequila,” co-written with Matraca Berg and recorded by Kenny Chesney, was nominated in 2011 as CMA’s “Song of the Year” and received two Grammy nods. Carter also recently co-wrote and produced a new album for recording artist Audra Mae while putting the finishing touches on her own Southern Way of Life that hit the shelves last December. Danny Myrick DANNY MYRICK is an award winning songwriter and musician based here in Nashville.
