PICASSO LES LIVRES d’ARTISTE The collection of Mr. A*** collection ofThe Mr. d’artiste livres Les PICASSO PICASSO Les livres d’artiste The collection of Mr. A*** Author’s note Years ago, at the University of Washington, I had the opportunity to teach a class on the ”Late Picasso.” For a specialist in nineteenth-century art, this was a particularly exciting and daunting opportunity, and one that would prove formative to my thinking about art’s history. Picasso does not allow for temporalization the way many other artists do: his late works harken back to old masterpieces just as his early works are themselves masterpieces before their time, and the many years of his long career comprise a host of “periods” overlapping and quoting one another in a form of historico-cubist play that is particularly Picassian itself. Picasso’s ability to engage the art-historical canon in new and complex ways was in no small part influenced by his collaborative projects. It is thus with great joy that I return to the varied treasures that constitute the artist’s immense creative output, this time from the perspective of his livres d’artiste, works singularly able to point up his transcendence across time, media, and culture. It is a joy and a privilege to be able to work with such an incredible collection, and I am very grateful to Mr. A***, and to Umberto Pregliasco and Filippo Rotundo for the opportunity to contribute to this fascinating project. Picasso in Istanbul has been selected by the artist‟s grandson Bernard Ruiz-Picasso and Marta-Volga Guezala. Picasso expert Marilyn McCully and author Michael Raeburn are joint curators of the exhibition and the catalogue, working together with Nazan Olçer, Director of the Sakip Sabanci Museum, and Selmin Kangal, the museum‟s Exhibitions Manager. The exhibition will include 135 works spanning the whole of the artist‟s career, including paintings, sculptures, ceramics, textiles and photographs. The works have been loaned from private collections and major museums, including the Picasso museums in Barcelona and Paris. The exhibition also includes significant loans from the Fundaciñn Almine y Bernard Ruiz-Picasso para el Arte. A number of rarely seen works from private collections will be a special highlight of the exhibition, including tapestries of “Les Demoiselles d‟Avignon” and “Les femmes à leur toilette” and the unique bronze cast, “Head of a Warrior, 1933”. -

This event, organized in partnership with the Tate Modern in London, invites the visitor to follow the production of a particularly rich year in a rigorously chronological journey. It will question the famous formula of the artist, according to which the work that is done is a way of keeping his journal? which implies the idea of a coincidence between life and creation. Among the milestones of this exceptional year are the series of bathers and the colorful portraits and compositions around the figure of Marie-Thérèse Walter, posing the question of his works relationship to surrealism. In parallel with these sensual and erotic works, the artist returns to the theme of the Crucifixion while Brassaï realizes in December a photographic reportage in his workshop of Boisgeloup. 1932 also saw the museification of Picassos work through the organization of retrospectives at the Galerie Georges Petit in Paris and at the Kunsthaus in Zurich, which exhibited the Spanish painter to the public and critics for the first time since 1911. The year also marked the publication of the first volume of the Catalog raisonné of the work of Pablo Picasso, published by Christian Zervos, which places the painter of the Demoiselles dAvignon in the context of his own work. -

PRESENTATION Lee Miller, (USA 1907 - UK 1977) was a woman of many facets: a commercial photographer, news reporter, war correspondent, beautiful model and a Surrealist artist. During her Paris years she collaborated with Man Ray. Miller was also a photographer who took over a thousand photographs of Picasso in the course of their thirty-six year friendship. Miller and Picasso might well have met in Paris in 1929, where she lived with Man Ray or in 1930 when she had the lead role in Jean Cocteau’s movie, Le sang d’un poète. As chance would have it, it wasn’t until August 1937 that the audacious American photographer and Pablo Picasso finally met. Their enduring friendship began when Miller came to Mougins on the French Riviera with her lover Roland Penrose. During her stay in Mougins, Picasso painted six portraits of Miller dressed as an Arlésienne. Five of those paintings are on display in this exhibition. -

Pablo Picasso Pablo Picasso (b. 1881, Málaga, Spain; d. 1973, Mougins, France), the son of an academic Biography painter, José Ruiz Blasco, began to draw and paint from an early age. Picasso studied first at the Fine Arts School in La Coruña and practised illustration and drawing caricatures at home. While studying at La Lonja Art Academy in Barcelona where his father had been appointed professor, he frequented the café Els Quatre Gats, the gathering place for a group of artists, musicians, and others who were crucial to his early artistic development. In summer 1901, Picasso held his first Paris exhibition at the Galeries Vollard. In 1904 he moved to Paris, settling in the Bateau-Lavoir studio in Montmartre. His circle of friends soon included Guillaume Apollinaire, Max Jacob, and Gertrude and Leo Stein, as well as two dealers, Ambroise Vollard and Berthe Weill. Picasso’s style developed from the Blue Period (1901–04) to the Rose Period (1905), leading him to the pivotal work Les Demoiselles d’Avignon (1907). The years 1906–07 marked his discovery of Iberian and African art. In the years from 1908 to World War I he experimented with Cubism, with the subsequent evolution from an Analytic phase (c. 1908–11) to a Synthetic phase (beginning in 1912–13). In 1910, Picasso designated Daniel-Henry Kahnweiler as his official art dealer. In February 1917, the artist traveled to Rome with Jean Cocteau to work on the ballet Parade. There, he met his future wife Olga Khokhlova. Soon after, his paintings and drawings came to be characterized by large, neoclassical compositions featuring nudes and figural representations. -

PICASSO À L ’ Œ U V R E Dans l’objectif de David Douglas Duncan MUSÉE D ’ART ET D ’HISTOIRE , GENÈVE 3 0 OCTOBRE 2 01 2 – 3 FÉVRIER 2 0 1 3 COMMUNIQUÉ DE PRESSE Immersion dans le quotidien créatif de Picasso Genève, septembre 2012 – Depuis 1984, le Musée d’art et d’histoire conserve dans ses collections Baigneurs à la Garoupe de Pablo Picasso, œuvre majeure pour le musée genevois, mais également tableau essentiel de l’artiste, qu’il peint, sous l’œil du photographe David Douglas Duncan, durant son séjour à la villa La Californie à Cannes dans les années 1950. Il était donc naturel que l’institution souhaite accueillir l’exposition itinérante Picasso à l’œuvre. Dans l’objectif de David Douglas Duncan , tout en la remaniant pour cette ultime étape. Cette présentation plonge le visiteur dans l’intimité de Picasso. L’intimité de son quotidien, mais également celle de son travail et de ses recherches grâce à l’association des œuvres achevées de l’artiste et des photographies de Duncan représentant, pour certaines d’entre elles, chaque étape de leur création. Après des escales au Museo Picasso Málaga, au Kunstmuseum Pablo Picasso de Münster et à La Piscine, Musée d’art et d’industrie André Diligent de Roubaix, l’exposition itinérante Picasso à l’œuvre. Dans l’objectif de David Douglas Duncan prend une forme légèrement différente pour sa halte au Musée d’art et d’histoire de Genève. Articulée autour de neuf sections associant clichés de Duncan et œuvres de l’artiste, elle montre à la fois Picasso « le mystérieux » et le « mystère de sa créativité ».
