Shallowly lobed leaves putatively sep- arate S. munroana and S. parvifolia from S. grossulariifolia and S. coccinea, whose leaves are deeply lobed, cleft more than halfway to the base, and, in many, cleft to the base. However, S. munroana is often difficult to distinguish from S. parvifolia, whereas S. grossulariifolia can be easily confused with S. coccinea and some specimens of S. munroana (Holmgren et al., 2005). Besides leaf morphology, the mature fruiting carpel characteristics, density of leaf hairs, and hair ray orientation sometimes are used as keys for taxonomists to identify specimens (Atwood and Welsh, 2002). How- ever, these characters are seldom used in practical settings and are not efficient for field use or for non-taxonomist collectors. Theinter- grading morphology of these species might be a result of genetic overlap and makes selection for superior forms difficult. In terms of the geological distribution of the four species (United States Department of Agriculture, 2012), S. coccinea is found extensively throughout the IMW, and S. grossulariifolia is found throughout the Great Basin, generally toward the western part of the IMW. Distribution of S. munroana and S. parvifolia overlaps in Nevada, Utah, and Colorado, where S. parvifolia is distributed further south and S. munroana distributed further north. In Utah, where the distributions of the four species overlap, geographical differences seem to play an important role in putative species distribution, particularly for S. munroana and S. parvifolia, which occur in the north and south, respectively Fig. 1. Torr., is an obligate wetland graminoid species (Reed 1988). Beaked spikerush is widespread in the Americas from across southern Canada to northern Mexico, to the West Indies, the Caribbean, and the Andes of South America (Cronquist et al. 1994; Hitchcock et al. 1994). The species is secure throughout its range with a G5 ranking, but infrequent across most of the U.S., with Region 2 state rankings ranging from S1, critically imperiled; to S2, imperiled; to SR, reported (NatureServe 2001). Beaked spikerush is a “species of special concern” with the South Dakota Natural Heritage Program (Ode pers. comm. 2001). The only currently known population of beaked spikerush in South Dakota is in Fall River County, along Cascade Creek, an area where several other rare plant species occur. The beaked spikerush population is present on lands administered by Black Hills National Forest (BHNF), and on surrounding private lands, including the Whitney Preserve owned and managed by The Nature Conservancy (TNC).

The unit is derived from constructivist and social learning theories. IMPLEMENTATION: The teaching unit can be extended to a 5 week intensive study, or restricted to a more intense, shorter lived unit of study. The end goal of the project is the creation of an interactive website using a map of the Intermountain West as the home page. Links on the map will be established by students to connect to the results of their research. The links can be identified as cultural, economic, social, historic and political or however the implementer prefers to focus his or her students’ attention. Elements of the teaching unit include several scaffolding activities, but can be used in isolation if preferred. These elements are: mapping and identification of geographic composition of the Intermountain West; study of individuals of note in the Intermountain West; research of routes into, through and within the Intermountain West; literature, arts and music of the Intermountain West; peoples of the Intermountain West; rivers and canals of the Intermountain West and the changing biology of the Intermountain West.
