It is an overt silence, in the sense that religion appears to be deliberately omitted from consideration. There is an implicit assumption that societies in the South will adopt the secular project of political modernity already perfected in and by the North. The paradox, however, as my dissertation demonstrates, is that development and religion are deeply imbricated at various local, national and transnational sites of power-knowledge. I adopt Foucauldian Dz dz and a post-colonial, post-modern, feminist theoretical framework to focus on Bangladesh, a Dzdz Muslim nation-state, as a case study of this paradox. My investigations reveal that international development organizations, in conjunction with a patriarchal Bangladeshi state, are targeting and trans(forming) tens of thousands of male Muslim imams as socio-political and religious authority figures or DzLeaders of Influencedz Dz in dz. I propose that in this newly constituted discourse, male Muslim imams are being instilled with new forms of authority and influence not only in relation to Islam, but ǯ ǤIn embracing the development project, trained imams are constituted simultaneously not only as non- modern men who are a potential challenge to the development mission, but as subjects being given opportunities to strengthen their gender and religious authority in the service ǡDz dz. My conclusions emerge from an interdisciplinary, qualitative study that included fieldwork in Bangladesh in summer 2006. I show how the Imam Discourse emerges in a particular ethno-religious context and a post 9/11 Dzdzwhen American hegemonic interests are dominating geo-political understandings of, and entanglements with Muslim subjects. I also explore emerging, new counter-discourses that pertain to development and Muslim society and reflect gender-aware, and Muslim feminist reinterpretations of political modernity, secularism and international development. ii Preface Approval for my fieldwork in Bangladesh was granted by The University of British Columbia, Behavioural Research Ethics Board under a Certificate of Approval Number B06-0448 dated June 20, 2006 for a term of one year. Abed was delivering the Barrister Syed Ishtiaq Ahmed Memorial Lecture 2008 on the 'Development as a Right: The Role of Legal Empowerment in the Making of a Just Society' at the National Museum auditorium. It was organised by Barrister Syed Ishtiaq Ahmed Memorial Foundation at the Asiatic Society of Bangladesh. “When a single member of our neighbourhood lives in poverty and squalor, we are all impoverished,” he said. It is for the governments, organisations and individuals who should practise as a daily act of social justice to make the society a just one, he observed. The Brac founder said in an unequal society where the poor are already disadvantaged, it is important to provide legal safety nets before allowing market forces to operate freely. The present global financial crisis is an example of the unfair economic and social policies at work, he added. Abed said issues like sustainable development, responsible energy, carbon trading or water foot- printing, in the case of Bangladesh, have direct bearing on imminent challenges on several fronts, particularly in food security and climate changes. "It is a sad reality that globally as well as nationally, we have had to wait for such grim realities to shake us out of our self-absorbed comfort zones and make us connect the crucial dots between our rights, needs and responsibilities to our respective societies," he added.

He was 83 years old. Sir Fazle breathed his last yesterday on Friday (20.12.2019) at 8.28pm (BST), while undergoing ​ treatment at the Apollo Hospitals in Dhaka city, Bangladesh. He was battling a malignant tumour of the ​ ​ brain. He will be laid to rest at the graveyard in Banani in the capital tomorrow on Sunday (22.12.2019). The honourable President and Prime Minister of Bangladesh expressed deep shock and sent condolences to the grieving members of Sir Fazle's family. President Md. Abdul Hamid said in a statement, "Through founding BRAC, Sir Fazle Hasan Abed made immense contributions to the socioeconomic development of Bangladesh. The whole nation will remember him with respect for the work that he accomplished." Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina said in a statement, “In 1971, Sir Fazle Hasan Abed travelled from England to different European countries in order to gain support, collect funds and form public opinion for our great War of Liberation. He worked for the rebuilding of the war-torn and newly independent Bangladesh. His main thesis will be that in a country like Bangladesh, it is possible make a significant positive change in the lives of the poor and other marginalized people, including women. In fact, “it is possible to bring hope back!” He will recollect how he decided to move to the uncharted territory of “development” and to leave his secure career in a multinational oil company. BRAC started as a small relief and rehabilitation effort in a remote rural district of Bangladesh after the liberation of the country. Early on, it became clear that relief was not the way to make a sustainable improvement in poor people’s lives, and BRAC started experimenting with “development.” Different projects on health, education, and economic development were piloted. Some were successful while others were not. Mr. Abed will explore a major question that BRAC faced with regard to successful programs and agencies: how should they be dealt with? The traditional wisdom was that the government would replicate them, but given the situation prevailing at that time, it was not going to happen. Mr. Abed will discuss the example of an early successful program. The year 1979 was named the “International Year of the Child,” and BRAC knew from its work that high infant mortality and fertility were major problems facing the country.
