Using phrases like ‘Judeo-Christianity’, ‘Christian values’, or ‘Christian Leitkultur’ a variety of political actors have claimed that religious-cultural identity needs to be safeguarded and enshrined in policy. As this frame is gaining traction, the question arises what this emphasis on the public importance of religion entails for those who tend to see themselves as the guardians of religious-cultural identity. In par- ticular this article focusses on the challenges this development creates for Christian Democratic political actors. On the one hand the emphasis on the importance of ‘christian traditions’ resonates with the historical position of christian democrats, on the other hand, there are im- portant differences between traditional christian democracy and how the New Right speaks of religion. The main aim of this article is to outline how the rise of the New Right has created a contestation about what it means to represent christian cultural identity. How serious is the international community of states about human rights standards for business? commentary by Miriam Saage-Maaβ Vice Legal Director & coordinator of Business & Human Rights program European Center for Constitutional and Human Rights July 2012 Recent developments have shown one more time that the struggle for human rights is not only about the creation of international standards so that the rule of law may prevail. The struggle for human rights is also a struggle between different economic and political interests, and it is a question of power which interests prevail. 2011 was an important year for the development of standards in the field of business and human rights. In May 2011 the OECD member states approved a revised version of the OECD Guidelines for Multinational Enterprises, introducing a new human rights chapter. Only a month later the United Nations Human Rights Council (UNHRC) endorsed by consensus the UN Guiding Principles on Business and Human Rights.1 These two international documents are both designed to provide a global standard for preventing and addressing the risk of business-related human rights violations. In particular, the UN Guiding Principles focus on the “State Duty to Protect” and the “Corporate Responsibility to Respect” in addition to the “Access to Remedy” principle. This principle seeks to ensure that when people are harmed by business activity, there is both adequate accountability and effective redress, both judicial and non-judicial. A&K Analyse & Kritik 2018; 40(2): 381–403 Mathias Risse* Why We Should Talk about German ‘Orientierungskultur’ rather than ‘Leitkultur’ https://doi.org/10.1515/auk-2018-0021 Abstract: The notion of Leitkultur has been used in German immigration debates to capture the idea that our living arrangements ought to be shaped by shared cultural identity. Leitkultur contrasts with a multiculturalism that sees multiple cultures side-by-side on equal terms. We should replace Leitkultur with Orien- tierungskultur, a notion whose introduction is overdue. German philosophy, espe- cially Kant, has bestowed an intellectual meaning upon an originally geographi- cal notion that is already ubiquitous, making ‘Orientierungskultur’ a natural con- struct. That notion allows us to say there is an inevitably amorphous but recog- nizable German culture whose prominence in public life provides a grounding for many and prevents them from feeling alienated from the society they helped build; at the same time, for some domains of public life not participating in de- fault behavior is not merely tolerated but acknowledged as a genuine alternative. Crucially, one way of orienting oneself is to turn away. An influx of newcomers can be disruptive, especially if much of it occurs in a short period. New arrivals are welcome to those who connect culturally, benefit economically, value diversity or believe immigration or refuge is a proper response to humanitarian crises or oth- erwise morally called for. To others more diversity is alienating because they feel their social world no longer is for them. -

Introduction
Chapter 1 Introduction Since the middle of the twentieth century, Western Europe has been faced with growing migration flows. Social research has focused on the first generation of international migrants, the interplay between international migration and the family dynamics of migrants, however, has not been fully understood. International migration is associated with a rapid change in the migrants’ environment. This change usually takes place within a much shorter time span than societies alter as a whole. Immigrants have to cope with these changes. Therefore, the study of the demographic behavior of migrants enables us to gain insights into the patterns and speed of the demographic responses of individuals or groups to sudden environmental alterations to which they are exposed (Coleman 1994). The life-course approach (e.g., Mulder 1993; Mulder and Wagner 1993) allows us to analyze the sequencing of several events, and therefore to study the short-term as well as the long-term effects of migration on a person’s life. Studies show, for example, that international migration often coincides with downward social mobility for the migrants in terms of occupation, income, housing conditions, etc. (Constant and Massey 2005). Internal or international migration and partner selection are frequently interrelated processes (Mulder 1993; Milewski 2003; Straßburger 2003; Kulu 2006), and international migration and repeated moves have an impact on the subsequent stability of a union (Roloff 1998; Boyle et al. 2008). Der Deutsche Bundestag gedenkt der Opfer von Gewalt, Mord und Vertreibung. Bei Massakern und Todesmärschen starben in den Jahren 1915 bis 1918 hunderttausende ArmenierInnen. Die unfass- baren Geschehnisse dieser Jahre haben bis heute tiefe Wunden bei ArmenierInnen weltweit hinterlassen, die diese Jahre als Aghet („Katastrophe“) bezeichnen. Auch zehntausende Angehörige anderer christlicher Bevölkerungsgruppen im Osmanischen Reich, wie der AramäerInnen, AssyrerInnen, ChaldäerInnen und Pontos-GriechInnen, erfuhren damals Gewalt und Vertreibung. Das Deutsche Reich war 1915 enger Partner des Osmanischen Reiches. Obwohl deutsche Diplomaten und Missionare über den Völkermord berichteten, schritt die Regierung des Deutschen Reiches nicht ein und verhinderte sogar die Weiter- verbreitung entsprechender Informationen. Dennoch trugen die Berichte deut- scher Missionare dazu bei, die Weltöffentlichkeit über die Verbrechen an den Ar- menierInnen aufzuklären. Der Deutsche Bundestag beklagt die Taten der jungtürkischen Regierung des Os- manischen Reiches, die zur fast vollständigen Vernichtung der ArmenierInnen in Anatolien geführt haben.
