EXPLORE TWO ICONIC, WILD REGIONS ON ONE NEW EXPEDITION

ABOARD NATIONAL GEOGRAPHIC ORION | 2020-2022 Dear Traveler,

Back in 1966 & ‘67 my father, Lars-Eric Lindblad, was the first to bring adventurous travelers to Antarctica and Patagonia. While we’ve added greatly to our knowledge of these lands and much in the world has changed, these two places remain largely unchanged. They are both isolated by geography—remote and imposing in every way. They are not easy to get or to explore, but I can assure you that if you make the commitment to explore them you will get back ten-fold what you put in.

For the first time we are combining these iconic regions into one voyage. Our 20-day Antarctica and Patagonia: Legendary Ice and Epic Fjords itinerary is a chance to explore the southernmost realms of the planet—places of unimaginable beauty, where humpback whales breach and gather by the thousands, where icebergs shimmer and sapphire-hued fjords harbor snowcapped peaks and virgin forests. Follow in the wake of legendary explorers like Ernest Shackleton and Ferdinand Magellan to explore these capitals of wildness.

And, if you’ve recently been to Antarctica or simply want to focus on Patagonia, our 16-day Best of Chilean Patagonia itinerary offers a broad view of the region, so you’ll experience the highlights as well as several out-of-the-way wonders. It is a unique land and sea journey that includes three nights at a superb lodge situated inside the famous Torres del Paine National Park. This is a perfect base camp from which to discover inland Patagonia. Plus, we’ll call at Isla de los Estados, an island long off-limits to outsiders that is overrun with wild beech forests and penguins and is home to the “lighthouse at the end of the world,” which inspired Jules Verne’s novel of the same name.

Both expeditions are on National Geographic Orion. If you haven’t had the pleasure of sailing her, she is an absolute joy to be aboard. The smallest of our ice-strengthened vessels, she is perfect for sailing deep into the extensive maze of fast-moving channels and fjords of Chile and through “Glacier Alley”—both incredible sites you’ll explore on both itineraries featured here. And at just 102 guests she is yacht-scale and intimate, and our guests consistently give her chefs and amenities rave reviews in comment cards.

As always, our expedition staff will add further dimensions to your experience, and a National Geographic photographer will help you capture the abundant and incredible photo opportunities at the ends of the Earth. I hope you’ll join us.

All the best,

EXPLORE PATAGONIA’S WILD COAST AND IMPOSING INTERIOR BY LAND AND SEA

2 BEST OF CHILEAN PATAGONIA

PATAGONIA HAS NO DEFINED BORDERS. ROUGHLY FRAMED BY imposing peaks and fast-moving channels, it is as much a wild idea as it is a wild place. To explore it is to enter a near-mythic land that without an expedition ship is accessible only to the hardiest of backpackers. This 16-day Best of Chilean Patagonia itinerary offers you a chance to venture into the rugged interior. You’ll savor the grandeur of Torres del Paine’s sunrises and sunsets, its saw-toothed peaks, and its profusion of wildlife over three days at the Tierra Patagonia Hotel & Spa, a National Geographic Unique Lodge of the World, or the outstanding Explora Patagonia Hotel Salto Chico. Then sail Patagonia’s maze of channels and fjords that terminate in tidewater glaciers aboard National Geographic Orion. Venturing out on Zodiac forays, or hiking virgin trails, you’ll breathe the rarefied air of this pristine region. Enjoy special access to ’s Isla de los Estados (Staten Island)—a seldom-seen island covered in wind-sculpted flora, with abundant South American fur seals. Discover the vast parklands of Karukinka, where we have special permission from the Wildlife Conservation Society. And if the weather gods are with us, you can check viewing legendary Cape Horn off your life list. The 12-day Patagonia: Chilean Fjords & Argentina’s Staten Island provides the same peak experiences, but in a more compact timeframe, and without the land stay.
