From hunter returns - wildlife officers have found out that coyotes have been eating VERY well and the average age was 1.8 years (young). From this info, we can deduce that most came from the level 2 food chain - meaning there are a large number in the population. 68% of carcasses were pups. - breeding well.

From Stomach contents in summer plants but in winter mostly protein. (In order - , voles and mice, squirrels, berries, small game birds and eggs, moose and caribou.

Most moose and caribou in stomachs of coyotes came from CARRION (carcasses left behind from other animal kills)

Where do coyotes come from - were introduced to NL and Labrador initially in mid 80's from ice flows (probably from southern Quebec or PEI) -

• First landed on island of NL just up from port-aux-Basque region (North west tip of island) • Second - interior of island (deer lake region) • Third - Souther tip of island (St. Anthony region) • Forth - introduced to Labrador across St. Anthony region to souther coast of Labrador. (3 years ago)

4 South Coast Of Labrador 3 - St. Anthony region

2. - interior

1. INTRODUCED Coyotes were breeding VERY fast on the island of NL, as they had no natural predators so population numbers exploded. On the other hand, population numbers in Labrador stayed SMALL - as there was already in Labrador to prey upon the newly introduced coyotes.

Wolf Hunt

• Licence $25 - have to go to Goose Bay Wildlife office.

• Bag limit - 1 (when kill, have to tag and bring back skull - jaw to a wildlife office - LAW)

• Season - same a big game season. (Early Fall to March).

• In NL, wolf thought extinct 1929, and for 70 years no wolves - there have been sightings recently. Labrador - healthy population.
