Skin disorders can also be cured using herbal formulations. This study was carried out with an objective to investigate the antibacterial and antifungal potentials of leaf and seed extracts of Croton tiglium plant. The aim of the study was to assesses the antimicrobial activity and to determine the zone of inhibition of leaf and seed extracts of Croton tighlium for potential antimicrobial activity against skin disease causing microbes using agar well diffusion method. The antibacterial and antifungal activities of extracts of Croton tiglium were tested against four bacterial and three fungal strains. Bacterial strains were Staphylococcus aureus, Staphylococcus epidermidis, Escherichia coli, Pseudomonas aeruginosa and fungal strains were Candida albicans, Trichophyton rubrum and Microsporum canis. Zone of inhibition of extracts were compared with that of standards. The results showed remarkable inhibition of bacterial and fungal growth against tested organisms. The phytochemical analysis was also performed which showed the presence active components like phenol, flavonoids saponins, steroids etc. in the extracts. -

Watson2 INTRODUCTION A yellow carpet of fallen petals, delicate leaflets which cast a mosaic of welcoming shade, and large clusters of persistent rose-colored, papery capsules all help to make Chinese Flame-Treetree a very popular landscape tree over a wide area of the south (Fig. 1). One of only a few yellow-flowering trees for the mid- and deep-south landscape. This broad-spreading, deciduous tree reaches a height of 40 to 60 feet and eventually takes on a flat-topped, somewhat irregular silhouette. It is often used as a patio, shade, street, or specimen tree. The small, fragrant, yellow flowers appear in very showy, dense, terminal panicles in early summer, and are followed in late summer or fall by large clusters of the two-inch-long "Chinese lanterns". These papery husks are held above the foliage and retain their pink color after drying and are very popular for use in everlasting flower arrangements. The bark on Chinese Flame-Tree is smooth and light brown when young, becoming ridged and furrowed as the tree matures. Easily distinquished from Koelreuteria paniculata since Koelreuteria bipinnata has more upright branches and has twice compound leaves, whereas Koelreuteria paniculata has single pinnate compound leaves. Forty three components comprising 93.05 % of the leave oils from Hangzhou plant, and 32 components comprising 94.26 % of the leave oils from Wenzhou plant were identified. The major components in the leaf oil from Hangzhou samples were (-)-alloisolongifolene (10.20 %), caryophyllene (9.31 %), elixene (8.52 %), germacrene D (7.30 %), germacrene B (7.44 %), δ-cadinene (6.17 %) and β-elemen (4.67 %). While, the oil from Wenzhou samples contained furan, 3-(4,8- dimethyl-3,7-nonadienyl)-, (E)-(21.69 %), eucalyptol (19.02 %), terpilene (12.41 %), p-menth-1-en-8-ol (6.65 %) and geraniol (5.29 %) as the major components. -

Abstract The seed of Croton tiglium L. (SCT) is a well known folk medicine. In China, it has used to treat gastrointestinal disorders, intestinal inflammation, rheumatism, and so on. Previous studies established its purgative and inflammation properties. In addition, the effects of essential oil of SCT on intestinal transit and gastrointestinal tract has been studied. In the present study, we evaluated the antinociceptive effect of SCT through the writhing test in mice, investigated the effects of it on spontaneous smooth muscle contractions of isolated rabbit jejunum and examined the in-vitro results through the in-vivo small intestine propulsion. We further investigated the possible compounds using HPLC-MS, and six compounds were tentatively identified as phorbol esters. Furthermore, the possible fragmentation pathways of phorbol esters were proposed, and we also detected the possible compounds in the active parts. Winter Blooming Shrubs by RICHARD E. WEAVER, JR. Winters in the eastern part of this country south of Washington, D.C. are seldom as unpleasant as they are here in the Northeast. Of course the temperatures there are less extreme, but for those of us who appreciate plants and flowers, the real difference is perhaps due to the Camellias. Blooming through the worst weather that January and February have to offer, these wonderful plants with their bright and showy blooms make winter something almost worth anticipating. Although there are some hopeful new developments through con- centrated breeding efforts, we in most of the Northeast still must do without Camellias in our gardens. Nevertheless, there are a sur- prising number of hardy shrubs, perhaps less showy but still charm- ing and attractive, that will bloom for us through the winter and the early days of spring. Some, such as the Witch Hazels, are foolproof; others present a challenge for they are susceptible to our capricious winters and may lose their opening flowers to a cold March. For those gardeners willing to take the chance, a few of the best early- flowering shrubs displayed in the border, or as the focal point in a winter garden, will help to soften the harshness of the season. Many plants that bloom in the early spring have their flowers per- fectly formed by the previous fall. Certain of these do not require a period of cold dormancy, and in mild climates will flower intermit- tently during the fall and winter. Most species, however, do require an environmental stimulus, usually a period of cold temperatures, before the buds will break and the flowers open.
