ANTUNES, B.A., UNIVERSITY OF THE AZORES M.A., UNIVERSITY OF THE AZORES Ph.D., UNIVERSITY OF MASSACHUSETTS AMHERST Directed by: Professor Francisco Cota Fagundes Based on the idea of itinerancy as a vital element of human existence, this doctoral dissertation examines and reevaluates the corpus of poems integrating Jorge de Sena’s and Cecília Meireles' “travel poetry,” proposing poetic itineraries bearing their own itineraries. Chapter 1 presents some considerations about the concept of travel in literature, as well as theoretical concepts related to the idea of travel, some of them discussed theoretically by the two poets. Reflecting on the privileged relationship that human movement inscribes in space creating new meanings, Chapter 2 presents the Senian and Meirelian physical spaces connected with their “travel poems,” taking into account the definition presented by Fazenda Lourenço, along with his listing of Senian “travel poems”. Of note in the “travel poems” is the apprehension of the historical cross- cultural images, which constitute a constant presence in the “travel poems” of the authors under consideration. Taking into account the importance of the presence of the city in literature and what this new phenomenon implies, Chapter 3 begins with some considerations derived from the presence of the city and the ways in which the displacement of humans in the urban space gave rise to new forms of expression, such as the “walk-poem.” Based on the work proposed by Francisco Cota Fagundes regarding this concept in the representation of the city of Porto in the poetry of Jorge de Sena, it turns out that Meireles’ poetry also reveals the presence of the “walk-poem.” This chapter also highlights the enchanting contrasts between the Senian and Meirelian “walk-poems,” with the poem “U.S.A. – 1940” by the Brazilian poet constituting the exception in her entire corpus. Finally, the last chapter establishes the itineraries from the “travel poem” to the “walk-poem,” embodying as well the “poetry of places,” a concept proposed by Fátima Freitas Morna. This concept redefines the “travel poem” presented herein, and proposes new perspectives of analysis for poems that can be classified as “walk-poems.” In this chapter the idea of endless travel that language itself establishes through the History and Culture of Humanity is also acknowledged in relation to a body of poems that could not be considered “travel poetry.” vii ABSTRACT ITINERÂNCIA(S) POÉTICA(S): JORGE DE SENA E CECÍLIA MEIRELES FEBRUARY 2018 SUSANA L. Assim, no Capítulo 1são apresentadas algumas considerações acerca da presença da viagem na literatura, assim como são referidos e estudados conceitos teóricos ligados à ideia de viagem, alguns deles teorizados pelos dois poetas. Refletindo sobre a relação privilegiada que o movimento do Homem implementa no espaço criando novos sentidos, no Capítulo 2 são apresentados os espaços físicos senianos e meirelianos apensos aos “poemas de viagem”, tendo em conta a definição apresentada pelo estudioso Fazenda Lourenço, assim como a sua lista classificativa de “poemas de viagem” senianos. De realçar ainda nos “poemas de viagem” a apreensão das imagens histórico- transculturais, constituindo-se uma presença consistente nos “poemas de viagem” dos autores em estudo. Tendo em consideração a importância da presença da cidade na literatura e o que o novo fenómeno aportou consigo, o Capítulo 3 inicia-se com algumas considerações

    Narratives of Power and Resistance in Jorge de Sena’s O Físico Prodigioso Rhian Atkin Cardiff University Abstract: This article examines Jorge de Sena’s interrogation of power and resistance in O Físico Prodigioso (1966). While the second half of the novella functions as a clear allegory for the Portuguese and Brazilian dictatorships of the mid-twentieth century, political oppression and repression are in fact deeply ingrained in Sena’s vision of society. The apparent freedom that is witnessed before and after dictatorship is not (and cannot be) universal, because for Sena even the power of discourse holds the potential for oppression. Drawing on Foucault’s work, the article posits that O Físico Prodigioso’s shifting narrative functions as a call for continual resistance against oppression in all of its forms. Keywords: Destabilization, freedom, Michel Foucault, dictatorship, Portugal Almost fifty years after it was first published in a short story collection (1966), Jorge de Sena’s O Físico Prodigioso remains one of the most textually challeng- ing, experimental pieces of prose fiction in the Portuguese language.1 The novella, which was published as a stand-alone text in 1977, involves substan- tial play at the level of both form and content. Francisco Cota Fagundes sug- gests that for its formal experimentation alone the novella deserves its canoni- cal status (“O artista” 133).   • The South Atlantic, Past and Present
    RUI MIRANDA Mai de Mar A Reading of Jorge de Sena’s “A Gra-Canaria” in (trans-)Atlantic Transit abstract: This article analyzes Jorge de Sena's short story “A Gra-Canaria” in the context of a wider discussion on the topographies of the South Atlantic taken as an ideological construct, to some extent always already textual(ized). The story empha- sizes the tensions in the enclosing of either the boat or the island as spaces of abso- lute fascist rule (in 1938 and 1961), and its setting in the Atlantic allows for a wider criticism of oppressive regimes operating in the South Atlantic axis while also ad- dressing the "Atlantic exception" (Roberto Vecchi) in the context of wider European headings. It dismantles both the incipient establishing of the Atlantic as a "Portu- guese Sea” by the Estado Novo and the construction of the legal and political con- ceptions such as that of the "overseas provinces" in the Constitutional Revision of 1951. Jahrhunderts entstand in Portugal eine Gegenbewe­ gung gegen Romantik, Naturalismus und alle konservativen Formen des ästhetisch­ literarischen Diskurses, die später unter dem Namen «erster Modernismus» (pri­ meiro modernismo) bekannt wurde und vor allem mit zwei Namen verbunden wird: Fernando Pessoa und Mário de Sá-Carneiro. Eine Gruppe junger Intellektuel­ ler und Künstler gab ihren Plänen in der Zeitschrift Orpheu programmatischen Ausdruck, deren erste Ausgabe (Januar-März 1915) bereits Texte jener Autoren enthielt, die später zu den wichtigsten Vertretern des ersten Modernismus zählten: Fernando Pessoa, Lyriker und Philosoph; António Ferro; Mário de Sá-Carneiro, Lyriker und Geldgeber der Zeitschrift; José Pacheco, Maler, und José Almada Negreiros, bildender Künstler, Verfasser von Streitschriften, Dramatiker, Provoka­ teur. The careers and ex- periences of these individuals were characterised by a way of relating to the world marked by continuous exclusion from the centres of hegemonic power, as well as by the establishment of connections and networks of varying degrees. In this sense, this article also focuses on the personal and collec- tive trajectories of the characters and how it is related to the boundaries of belonging that they established during their lives. A coincidência entre as datas de redação e de impressão, o mês de maio, tornou impraticável ver provas tipográficas, impossibilitando a correção de gralhas e de falhas de composição. Esse pequeno livro foi publicado quando não havia nenhum outro texto de apresentação global da obra de Jorge de Sena. Foi esse, então, o desafio, renovado nesta edição, revista e muito ampliada, para o centenário do poeta. Na primeira edição, o formato da coleção impunha restrições severas quanto ao número de páginas.     Provincetown Arts: Interview with Vamberto Freitas: Contemporary Azorean and Luso-American Writing * By Oona Patrick Vamberto Freitas is a Portuguese literary critic who has specialized in Luso-American literature for much of his career, and has been watching and waiting for the emergence of American writers of Portuguese descent, such as Katherine Vaz and our own Frank Gaspar. Freitas, a native of Terceira island in the Azores, lived for twenty-seven years in the United States, where he earned his degrees. He now lives with his wife Adelaide, a well-known poet and novelist, on São Miguel island in the Azores, in a beachfront community just outside the main city of Ponta Delgada. He teaches at the University of the Azores, which was founded in 1976 after the Portuguese revolution of 1974. Freitas is the author of several works of criticism, and has published opinion and criticism in many reviews, journals, and magazines in Portugal, including the Lisbon paper Diário de Notícias. He has translated Provincetown native Frank Gaspar’s poetry into Portuguese, and while editing an Azorean newspaper’s literary supplement, he published a special edition devoted to Gaspar in October 2005. The nine volcanic islands of the Azores lie over 900 miles off of Portugal in the mid- Atlantic Ocean, and were first inhabited by Portuguese and Flemish settlers in the fifteenth century. It’s well-known that many of Provincetown’s Portuguese came from São Miguel, the largest island. But Provincetown may have more in common with the more isolated Flores island, which is known for producing many writers and intellectuals despite its small population.
