In 1894, St Paul’s Church on Kirkgate, Shipley was the main burial ground for local residents – but it was full! As a result, 19 acres of land at Nab Wood was purchased by the Burial Board of the Council from the Earl of Rosse’s Estate for £2,800. Industrial Explorer Weekend West Yorkshire Bradford and surrounding towns 9th – 12th September 2021 One in a series of unique tours, developed from the City Safari, where a traditional Safari pattern does not work for the principal town but, with other settlements, the surrounding industrial areas and our own transport, presents a group of sites well worth exploring. Led by Sue Constable 3 nights, from £495. Discount for AIA members Covid Money Back Guarantee In the event that, due to Covid 19, government regulations change such that we are unable to run this tour all monies paid will be refunded in full. City Safaris and Industrial Explorer Weekends These walking tours take a look at an industrial city's civic, commercial, industrial and transport legacy on foot, guided by an expert. Our groups are deliberately kept small so that everyone has a chance to ask the leader questions as we go and to make walking as a group practicable in an urban environment. We go away for a long weekend and stay together as a group at a reasonable hotel. A dinner is held on the Thursday evening which is a chance for new members to be introduced and old friends to catch up on news. After dinner there is a short talk to introduce the city and its history as well as to explain the programme. City Safaris use whatever public transport is available: bus, tram, metro or train which is a great way to gain some understanding of how the area works and may be of historic interest in themselves.

  • Friends of a Dales High Way Newsletter Here
The Friends lead a walk for Ride2Stride 2012 Friends of A Dales High Way eNewsletter No 1 Spring 2014 Friends of A Dales High Way [email protected] Hello and welcome to the 1st Friends of A Dales High Way e- newsletter. The first of many we hope. Friends of A Dales High Way is a small voluntary organisation whose aim is to support and promote the long distance trail. Since it was set up in 2009 we have raised the money to waymark the route, produced a leaflet about the trail, led 2 walks and put on events as part of the Ride2Stride walking festival. It’s free to join, just go to daleshighway.co.uk/friends.htm and you’ll get occasional newsletters and emails to keep you up to date with whatever’s going on. Plus you’ll have the chance to send us your own news to put in the next newsletter. Waymarking Waymarking was completed in July 2013 when the final marker was put up by the Yorkshire Dales National Park. The process had taken some time as the 4 local authorities that the High Way passes through: Bradford, North Yorkshire, the Yorkshire Dales National Park and Cumbria, all have strict criteria about sticking up little arrows all over their bridleways and footpaths. These days the authorities prefer to have a less is more approach and it’s something that FoADHW agree with. We don’t want to see our fellsides littered with signage either. Walkers on A Dales High Way should not expect to see a waymark on every gate and stile along the way.

  • 1 Council 16 October 2018 Member Question Time
I COUNCIL 16 OCTOBER 2018 MEMBER QUESTION TIME Questions submitted in accordance with Standing Order 12 _____________________________________________________________ 1. Councillor Abid Hussain Can the Portfolio Holder give an update on the Council’s plans to increase footfall on Darley Street and other streets around the middle and top of town areas in the city centre? Answer The city centre has seen a huge boost in footfall with the numbers counted in just three core retail streets rising from 16 million to over 20 million a year since the Broadway Shopping Centre opened. Broadway Shopping Centre has opened new modern retail space bringing in retailers who have been absent for many years. Our work on regenerating our town and city centres is never done. We are therefore now working towards additional new developments to boost the success of the city. The Council’s plans for the new markets offer focussed on Darley Street will see significant investment in this area. Once these developments commence, it is expected that investor confidence will be reflected in the take-up of vacant units. Locating a new food focused market on Darley Street will see a huge upsurge in footfall in the area and surrounding streets. In the meantime the Council continues to offer assistance through the City Centre Growth scheme’s Priority Streets Initiative. This is a targeted scheme to incentivise businesses to bring back in to use vacant ground floor units in key retail streets with high volumes of vacant properties. The package of support available includes capital grants towards property improvements and equipment purchases along with business rate rebates.
