ABSTRACT OF GRADUATE STUDENT RESEARCH Dissertation Andrews University School of Education Title: A STUDY OF THE LEADERSHIP TRAINING NEEDS AS PERCEIVED BY THE SECONDARY SCHOOL PRINCIPALS OF FIJI Name of Researcher: Nemani W. Tausere Name and degree of faculty advisor: Edward Streeter, Ed.D. Date Completed: March, 1990 Problem If schools are to improve and become more accountable to the community they serve, relevant leadership training programs that help principals to function more effectively need to be provided. It is important that such training programs address the problems and needs of the principals. The purpose of this study was to identify and describe the leadership training needs as perceived by the secondary-school principals of Fiji. Reproduced with permission of the copyright owner. Further reproduction prohibited without permission. 2 Method A descriptive survey design was utilized for this study. The Leadership Training Needs questionnaire was sent to all 140 secondary-school principals in Fiji to survey (1) their perceived needs for leadership training, (2) past sources of leadership expertise, (3) sources of assistance for principals, and (4) demographic characteristics. The 110 completed returns were processed by the Andrews University Center for Statistical Services. The SPSS computer program was used in the analysis which yielded frequency, percentages of responses, and mean weight for each of the eight categories of demographic d ata. Findings 1. Educational authors studying school leadership since the early 1970s generally agreed that effective schools were the result of the activities of effective principals who demonstrated strong instructional leadership, created positive school climate conducive to learning, and knew how to manage time and people efficiently and effectively. 2. Secondary-school principals in Fiji expressed high priority need for additional leadership training in the skills of instructional leadership and human relations/staff development. The principals who most often expressed the need for additional leadership training were those who were (1) under 40 years of age; (2) Fijian; (3) assigned to medium-sized schools; (4) in charge of secondary high schools; and (5) who had the most recent educational training. 4. Secondary-school principals of Fiji reported that on-the-job experience, teaching experience, and deputy- principalship were their most valuable sources of leadership expertise. 5. In-service training and taking courses at colleges or universities were seen by the Fiji principals as effective sources of assistance in improving leadership skills. Conclusion Secondary-school principals in Fiji are not satisfied with their present level of leadership expertise. While they consider their experience as administrators to be their most valuable source of leadership expertise, they look toward in-service training, and college and university course work as potentially effective means of improving leadership skills.     1 Indenture and Contemporary Fiji Doug Munro This interview was conducted by Doug Munro on 9 October 1995 at the University of the South Pacific. At the time Brij Lal was one of three members of Fiji’s Constitutional Review Commission, and he was completing his biography of A.D. Patel.1 DM: I would like to start off by noting that you are the grandson of one of the 60,000 Indian indentured labourers on Fiji. How would you describe your background? BVL: My grandfather came to Fiji in 1908. After serving his five-year term of indenture he leased some native land and started his family there. My parents grew up in Labasa and I was born in Tabia village where the family farm still exists. Like most Indian people of that generation, my parents were illiterate although my mother somehow learned how to sign her name. But always at the back of their minds was the memory of indenture—the poverty, the petty humiliations—and my parents did not want to see their children go through a similar experience. Moreover, there was the insecurity of land tenure. We could only lease land for short periods; we could not own land. We were a large family of eight people so there was no way in which our parents could provide for all of us a future on the land, so economic insecurity played a part. This Michael Sofer paper deals with its physical characteristics, infrastructural conditions, and village economic activities with the aim of understanding the changes it has gone through in recent years. The goals of this research were to develop an account of the personal and cultural learning practices that students draw on and use when negotiating learning in their University studies and to understand the ways that University courses including teaching and learning interactions and course materials contribute to student learning and success. At the centre of this study is the concept of learning as negotiated practice. Data sources included a questionnaire with semi-structured and open-ended questions. Data collection and analysis was guided by the construct of third space theory (Guitierrez, 1999), which provided a frame for considering students’ DFL experiences as acts of negotiation that are situated in nested socio-cultural and socio-historical contexts.

    Policy Brief No. 20 APLN/CNND 1 Policy Brief No. 84 July 2020 Addressing Challenges in Climate Change Adaptation: Learning from the Narikoso Community Relocation in Fiji1 Anna Anisi Abstract Climate change adaptation remains a complex challenge both in policy and in practice. Yet, comprehensive and interdisciplinary research on adaptation barriers and challenges are limited, particularly in the context of small island developing states at the forefront of climate change. This paper draws from the experiences of a multi-stakeholder planned relocation measure in Narikoso village, Fiji, to enhance understandings around the nature and scope of challenges in relocation processes for adaptation. Key learnings are drawn from the Narikoso case study with implications for policy and practice. This brief makes strategic and operational recommendations in areas of: promoting participatory processes; building on existing capacities and improving coordination; strengthening the inclusion of socio-cultural dynamics; improving monitoring, evaluation and learning; and securing and managing finance. 1 This paper is based on research conducted by the author for the purpose of a Master’s thesis entitled ‘Explaining the presence and emergence of climate change adaptation barriers: A case study of the planned relocation of Narikoso village in the Fiji Islands’ (2019).
