The species are sorted according to FIBIGER e HACKER (1991) while the chorotype follows VIG NA TAGLANTI et al. (1992), each item is comprehensive of full collecting data. For the first tirne the species reported are: Noctua tertia Mentzer et al. in ltaly; Dysgonia torri da (Gn.), in continental Italy; Noctua janthe (Bkh.), Naenia typica ( L.), Dichonia convergens (D. & S.), Actinotia radiosa (Esp.), Episema tersa (D. & S.), Phragmitiphila nexa (Hb.), Atypha pul monaris (Esp .), Eremodrina vicina castrensis (Berio & Fiumi) in Southern Italy. Cucullia blattariae (Esp.) does not exist in Southern Italy, where it is substituted by Cucullia caninaeRbr. Cucullia wredowi Costa, and Conistra camastra De Laever are synonyms of Cucullia calendu lae Tr. and Conistra veronicae (Hb). Dasypolia banghaasi Turati and Dasypolia calabrolucana Hartig are believed to be the local form of Dasypolia templi (Thunberg) (n. syn.). List of the species of Noctuidae in Southern Italy now comprises of 481 taxa; there were 459 known species up to 1984, plus 10 new records in this paper, plus 9 of BERlO (1985, 1991) (Autophila limbata (Stdgr.), Mythimna pallens L. , Hadena guenéei Stdgr., Omphalophana serrata (Tr.), Episema grueneri Bsd., Leucochlaena hispida (Geyer), Aporophi/a lueneburgensis (Frr.), Eumichtis lichenea (Hb.) and Conistra daubei (Dup.)) plus 3 of ZrLLI (1980, 1986) (Lacanobia splendens (Hb.), Mythimna pudorina (D. & S.) and Chilodes maritima (Tausch.)). Despite the proximity of Sredna Gora Mountains to Sofia, the insect assemblages of this region are poorly studied. As a result of two studies carried out as a part of an Environmental Impact Assessment in the Natura 2000 Protected Areas: Sredna Gora and Popintsi, a rich diversity of insects was discovered, with 107 saproxylic and epigeobiont Coleoptera species and 355 Lepidoptera species recorded. This research was conducted during a short one-season field study in the surrounding areas of the town of Panagyurishte and Oborishte Village. Special attention was paid to protected species and their conservation status. Of the Coleoptera recorded, 22 species were of conservation significance. Forty-five Lepidoptera species of conservation importance were also recorded. KEY WORDS.WORDS. • Comparative Morphology of the Male Genitalia in Lepidoptera
COMPARATIVE MORPHOLOGY OF THE MALE GENITALIA IN LEPIDOPTERA. By DEV RAJ MEHTA, M. Sc.~ Ph. D. Introduction 197 Historical Review 199 Technique. 201 N ontenclature 201 Function • 205 Comparative Morphology 206 Conclusions in Phylogeny 257 Summary 261 Literature 1 262 INTRODUCTION. In the domains of both Morphology and Taxonomy the study' of Insect genitalia has evoked considerable interest during the past half century. Zander (1900, 1901, 1903) suggested a common structural plan for the genitalia in various orders of insects. This work stimulated further research and his conclusions were amplified by Crampton (1920) who homologized the different parts in the genitalia of Hymenoptera, Mecoptera, Neuroptera, Diptera, Trichoptera Lepidoptera, Hemiptera and Strepsiptera with those of more generalized insects like the Ephe meroptera and Thysanura. During this time the use of genitalic charac ters for taxonomic purposes was also realized particularly in cases where the other imaginal characters had failed to serve. In this con nection may be mentioned the work of Buchanan White (1876), Gosse (1883), Bethune Baker (1914), Pierce (1909, 1914, 1922) and others. Also, a comparative account of the genitalia, as a basis for the phylo genetic study of different insect orders, was employed by Walker (1919), Sharp and Muir (1912), Singh-Pruthi (1925) and Cole (1927), in Orthop tera, Coleoptera, Hemiptera and the Diptera respectively. It is sur prising, work of this nature having been found so useful in these groups, that an important order like the Lepidoptera should have escaped careful analysis at the hands of the morphologists.

Status of UK priority species: relative abundance Technical background document, 2020 NB this paper should be read together with 4b Status of UK Priority Species; distribution which presents a companion statistic based on time series on frequency of occurrence (distribution) of priority species. 1. Introduction The adjustments to the UK biodiversity indicators set as a result of the adoption of the Strategic Plan for Biodiversity (including the Aichi Targets) at the 10th Conference of Parties of the Convention on Biological Diversity mean there is a need to report progress against Aichi Target 12: Target 12: By 2020 the extinction of known threatened species has been prevented and their conservation status, particularly of those most in decline, has been improved and sustained. Previously, the UK biodiversity indicator for threatened species used lead partner status assessments on the status of priority species from 3-yearly UK Biodiversity Action Plan (UK BAP) reporting rounds. As a result of the devolution of biodiversity strategies to the UK's 4 nations, there is no longer reporting at the UK level of the status of species previously listed by the BAP process. This paper presents a robust indicator of the status of threatened species in the UK, with species identified as conservation priorities being taken as a proxy for threatened species.

E-mail: [email protected] The paper contains data on the fauna of the Lepidoptera families Erebidae (excluding subfamilies Lymantriinae and Arctiinae) and Noctuidae of the Saur Mountains (East Kazakhstan). The check list includes 216 species. The map of collecting localities is presented. Key words: Lepidoptera, Noctuidae, Erebidae, Asia, Kazakhstan, Saur, fauna. INTRODUCTION The fauna of noctuoid moths (the families Erebidae and Noctuidae) of Kazakhstan is still poorly studied. Only the fauna of West Kazakhstan has been studied satisfactorily (Gorbunov 2011). On the faunas of other parts of the country, only fragmentary data are published (Lederer, 1853; 1855; Aibasov & Zhdanko 1982; Hacker & Peks 1990; Lehmann et al. 1998; Benedek & Bálint 2009; 2013; Korb 2013). In contrast to the West Kazakhstan, the fauna of noctuid moths of East Kazakhstan was studied inadequately.

  • Recording and Monitoring Rarer Moths in the Yorkshire Dales
WHITAKER (2015). FIELD STUDIES (http://fsj.field-studies-council.org/) RECORDING AND MONITORING RARER MOTHS IN THE YORKSHIRE DALES TERRY WHITAKER [email protected] Field notes on some of the Yorkshire Dales National Park’s rarer moths, and the activity of the Yorkshire Dales Butterfly and Moth Action Group in increasing our KnoWledge of their distribution and status. RESEARCH SUMMARY Yorkshire Dales Butterfly and Moth Action Group YorKshire Dales Butterfly and Moth Action Group (YDBMAG) started in 2002 as an initiative betWeen Butterfly Conservation, the YorKshire Naturalists’ Union and the YorKshire Dales National ParK Authority (YDNPA). Its aims and objectives are as folloWs: • To advise on habitat action plans affecting Biodiversity Action Plan (BAP) Lepidoptera; • To devise species action plans for Local Biodiversity Action Plan (LBAP) Lepidoptera; • To monitor LBAP lepidopteran species. The folloWing initiatives have been promoted: • Increase public aWareness of LBAP species; • Increase KnoWledge of distribution of LBAP butterfly species; • Set up butterfly monitoring transects for LBAP species. These initiatives have included: • Setting up transects for small pearl-bordered fritillary and northern brown argus butterflies; • Surveys to discover the status and distribution in the YorKshire Dales National ParK (YDNP) of small pearl- bordered fritillary butterfly 2002, 2007-8 and 2013 and northern broWn argus butterfly 2002, 2007 and 2013; • Producing reporting postcards for common blue and green hairstreaK butterflies (2005-2007; 2006-2007); • Producing an identification guide to butterflies in the YDNP, With English Nature (WhitaKer, 2004); • Setting up transects in the small pearl-bordered fritillary and northern brown argus butterfly in the YDNP, by 2003. Currently, (2013), there are six UK butterfly monitoring scheme (UKBMS) transects in the YDNP.
