THE IUCN RED LIST OF THREATENED SPECIES™ Taxonomy Kingdom Phylum Class Order Family Plantae Tracheophyta Magnoliopsida Caryophyllales Cactaceae Taxon Name: Coryphantha pallida Britton & Rose Taxonomic Source(s): Hunt, D., Taylor, N. and Charles, G. (compilers and editors). 2006. The New Cactus Lexicon. dh Books, Milborne Port, UK. Taxonomic Notes: Two subspecies are recognized, the typical form and susbp. calipensis (Bravo ex Arias, U.Guzmán & S.Gama) Dicht & A.Lüthy. These are not assessed separately. Assessment Information Red List Category & Criteria: Least Concern ver 3.1 Year Published: 2013 Date Assessed: April 29, 2009 Justification: Coryphantha pallida has a relatively wide range, it occurs within the Biosphere Reserve of Tehuacán- Cuicatlán and it is locally propagated, hence the species is listed as Least Concern. However, there is evidence of illegal collection and habitat fragmentation affecting the population. Field studies are urgently needed to establish if the species qualifies as Vulnerable. Geographic Range Range Description: Coryphantha pallida is endemic to Puebla and Oaxaca, Mexico, occurring in the Tehuacán-Cuicatlán Valley (Arias et al. 1997, López-Galindo et al. 2003, Méndez-Larios et al. 2006), at elevations of 1,000 to 2,400 m asl. Country Occurrence: Native: Mexico (Oaxaca, Puebla) © The IUCN Red List of Threatened Species: Coryphantha pallida – published in 2013. 1 http://dx.doi.org/10.2305/IUCN.UK.2013-1.RLTS.T152377A630209.en Population The species is common but not abundant and grows on calcareous soil. Some subpopulations are in decline due to illegal collection (T. Valverde pers. comm. 2009). Current Population Trend: Decreasing Habitat and Ecology (see Appendix for additional information) The species grows in low tropical caduceus forest and xerophyllous scrub on calcareous soils (Arias et al. 1997). It prefers low forest-shrub that is closely associated with mezquital. It is often associated with Prosposis laevigata (López-Galindo et al. 2003). Systems: Terrestrial Use and Trade (see Appendix for additional information) The plants are extracted from wild populations and sold locally as ornamentals (T. Valverde pers. comm. 2009). Threats (see Appendix for additional information) Hydraulic erosion, and chemical, physical and biological degradation in Tehuacán-Cuicatlán due to mining, agriculture and livestock are some of the major threats (López-Galindo et al. 2003). Illegal collection is another major threat; Coryphantha pallida is popular for its attractive flowers and the populations are in decline due to collection of plants, especially larger specimens. Conservation Actions (see Appendix for additional information) This cactus is present but non-endemic in the Biospehere Reserve of Tehuacán-Cuicatlán (Méndez-Larios et al. 2006). The species is propagated locally in the Zapotilán Salinas nursery and the Reserve administration carries out environmental education programs with the local people (C. Hernández pers. comm. 2009).
