This paper reports an analysis of the magneto-optical trap (MOT) based on the narrow-line transition in 88Sr, while paying special attention to the role of the gravity. This analysis suggests the MOTs based on narrow-line transitions cannot be cold and dense enough in a µ-gE. We thus propose a strategy: that one can use a dual-frequency MOT to realize a low-temperature, high density, and high transfer efficiency, narrow-line red MOT in µ-gEs. TWO COMMUNICATIONS SATELLITES READY FOR LAUNCH Arianespace will orbit two communications satellite on its fifth launch of the year: INTELSAT 17 for the international satellite operator Intelsat, and HYLAS 1 for the European operator Avanti Communications. The choice of Arianespace by leading space communications operators and manufacturers is clear international recognition of the company’s excellence in launch services. Based on its proven reliability and availability, Arianespace continues to confirm its position as the world’s benchmark launch system. Ariane 5 is the only commercial satellite launcher now on the market capable of simultaneously launching two payloads. Arianespace and Intelsat have built up a long-standing relationship based on mutual trust. Since 1983, Arianespace has launched 48 satellites for Intelsat. Positioned at 66 degrees East, INTELSAT 17 will deliver a wide range of communication services for Europe, the Middle East, Russia and Asia. Built by Space Systems/Loral of the United States, this powerful satellite will weigh 5,540 kg at launch. It will also enable Intelsat to expand its successful Asian video distrubution neighborhood. INTELSAT 17 will replace INTELSAT 702. HYLAS 1 is Avanti Communications’ first satellite. A new European satellite operator, Avanti Communications also chose Arianespace to orbit its HYLAS 2 satellite, scheduled for launch in the first half of 2012. HYLAS 1 was built by an industrial consortium formed by EADS Astrium and the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO), using a I-2K platform. Fitted with Ka-band and Ku-band transponders, the satellite will be positioned at 33.5 degrees West, and will be the first European satellite to offer high-speed broadband services across all of Europe. -

European Maritime Safety Agency COPERNICUS MARITIME SURVEILLANCE SERVICE OVERVIEW Copernicus Maritime Surveillance Service THE COPERNICUS PROGRAMME Copernicus is a European Union Programme aimed at developing European information services based on satellite Earth Observation and in situ (non-space) data analyses. The programme is managed by the European Commission, and implemented in partnership with the member states and other organisations, including the European Maritime Safety Agency (EMSA). Copernicus is served by a set of dedicated satellites (the Sentinels) and contributing missions (existing commercial and public satellites). Copernicus services address six main thematic areas: Security; Land Monitoring; Marine Monitoring; Atmosphere Monitoring; Emergency Management; and Climate Change. THE SECURITY SERVICE The Copernicus Security Service supports EU policy by providing information in response to Europe’s security challenges. It improves crisis prevention, preparedness and response in three key areas: maritime surveillance (implemented by EMSA) border surveillance support to EU External Action The Copernicus service for security applications is distinct from other services in the Copernicus programme. Data obtained directly through the Copernicus programme is combined with data from other sources, which may be sensitive or restricted. The end services are then provided directly to authorised national administrations and to a limited number of EU institutions and bodies, in accordance with their access rights. Lafabrie CNES 18, avenue Edouard Belin 31401 Toulouse Cedex 9, France; +33561283070 [email protected] ABSTRACT The reduction of mass and size with improvement of the performance of a device is a permanent challenge for the space industry. The French National Space Agency has funded hundreds of R&D activities in the past, in all dedicated technical areas to facilitate these kind of technological evolution. Miniaturization efforts have, more recently, encountered a growing field of application, the one of Nanosatellites. For these applications, performance/cost trade-off is largely dominated by full cost, that is to say the cost including the entire satellite system development, from the initial idea to the end of life, including operations, data processing and its distribution. The carried out trade-offs are therefore based on a different constraints environment, in which the risk variable is systematically re-evaluated considering the cost/performance couple; the methods, the development process and the planning of delivery being directly impacted by this challenge. In this logic, and while continuing its efforts to miniaturize and improve performance for conventional markets (Earth observation, science, telecommunications, ...), CNES has adapted its working environment around the Nanosats domain to accelerate the development of adapted solutions. This adaptation being made both in terms of new development processes and of use of new COTS technology for equipment themselves. Moreover, projects in New Space are changing the historical relationship between CNES and its industrial partners and are encouraging a transition from a client/provider approach to a more co-partners approach. -

7. Operations 7.1 Ground Operations The Exploration Systems Architecture Study (ESAS) team addressed the launch site integra- tion of the exploration systems. The team was fortunate to draw on expertise from members with historical and contemporary human space flight program experience including the Mercury, Gemini, Apollo, Skylab, Apollo Soyuz Test Project, Shuttle, and International Space Station (ISS) programs, as well as from members with ground operations experience reaching back to the Redstone, Jupiter, Pershing, and Titan launch vehicle programs. The team had a wealth of experience in both management and technical responsibilities and was able to draw on recent ground system concepts and other engineering products from the Orbital Space Plane (OSP) and Space Launch Initiative (SLI) programs, diverse X-vehicle projects, and leadership in NASA/Industry/Academia groups such as the Space Propulsion Synergy Team (SPST) and the Advanced Spaceport Technology Working Group (ASTWG). 7.1.1 Ground Operations Summary The physical and functional integration of the proposed exploration architecture elements will occur at the primary launch site at the NASA Kennedy Space Center (KSC). In order to support the ESAS recommendation of the use of a Shuttle-derived Cargo Launch Vehicle (CaLV) and a separate Crew Launch Vehicle (CLV) for lunar missions and the use of a CLV for ISS missions, KSC’s Launch Complex 39 facilities and ground equipment were selected for conversion. Ground-up replacement of the pads, assembly, refurbishment, and/or process- ing facilities was determined to be too costly and time-consuming to design, build, outfit, activate, and certify in a timely manner to support initial test flights leading to an operational CEV/CLV system by 2011. -
