In your loving mercy forgive especially those sins that have harmed children and young people, as well as sins against the unborn, the poor and the vulnerable. BREAKING OPEN THE WORD Reflecting on next Sunday’s Gospel BEFORE Mass can bring so much more meaning to your experience of Liturgy. Each week we print the following Sunday’s Gospel with questions for reflection and discussion. ENJOY!

Fifth Sunday of Lent April 10, 2011 ~ Gospel: John 11:3-7. 17. 20-27, 33b-45

The sisters of Lazarus sent word to Jesus, saying, “Master, the one you love is ill.” When Jesus heard this he said, “This illness is not to end in death, but is for the glory of God, that the Son of God may be glorified through it.” Now Jesus loved Martha and her sister and Lazarus. So when he heard that he was ill, he remained for two days in the place where he was. Then after this he said to his disciples, “Let us go back to Judea.” When Jesus arrived, he found that Lazarus had already been in the tomb for four days. When Martha heard that Jesus was coming, she went to meet him; but Mary sat at home. Martha said to Jesus, “Lord, if you had been here, my brother would not have died. But even now I know that whatever you ask of God, God will give you.” Jesus said to her, “Your brother will rise.” Martha said, “I know he will rise, in the resurrection on the last day.” Jesus told her, “I am the resurrection and the life; whoever believes in me, even if he dies, will live, and everyone who lives and believes in me will never die. Do you believe this?” She said to him, “Yes, Lord. I have come to believe that you are the Christ, the Son of God, the one who is coming into the world.” He became perturbed and deeply troubled, and said, “Where have you laid him?” They said to him, “Sir, come and see.” And Jesus wept. So the Jews said, “See how he loved him.” But some of them said, “Could not the one who opened the eyes of the blind man have done something so that this man would not have died?” So Jesus, perturbed again, came to the tomb. It was a cave, and a stone lay across it. Jesus said, “Take away the stone.” Martha, the dead man’s sister, said to him, “Lord, by now there will be a stench; he has been dead for four days.” Jesus said to her, “Did I not tell you that if you believe you will see the glory of God?” So they took away the stone. And Jesus raised his eyes and said, “Father, I thank you for hearing me. I know that you always hear me; but because of the crowd here I have said this, that they may believe that you sent me.” And when he had said this, he cried out in a loud voice, “Lazarus, come out!” The dead man came out, tied hand and foot with burial bands, and his face was wrapped in a cloth. So Jesus said to them, “Untie him and let him go.” Now many of the Jews who had come to Mary and seen what he had done began to believe in him.

Jesus' promise of eternal life is central to our Catholic faith. Even though Easter is still two weeks away, we are invited today to acknowledge Jesus' power over death, evidenced in the raising of Lazarus, and to anticipate Jesus' conquering death once and for all in his death and Resurrection. When we join ourselves to Christ, we share in the power of his resurrection. When He created us, God sowed seeds of salvation in the resurrection. We sometimes use examples from nature to help describe this mystery of our faith. Jesus himself talked about the seed that dies when planted in the ground in order to produce new life (John 12:24). Using that image and others, we find hope and confidence in Jesus, the Resurrection and the life.

REFLECTION QUESTIONS: What “graves” has God opened in your life? When have you felt “dead” and then experienced God giving you a resurgence of life? Describe some things in your life that bind you, stop you from “feeling alive.” What new life, new freedom is waiting to blossom in you? FOR FAMILIES AND CHILDREN: Think of a time when you held back from doing something good for yourself or another person. Describe. Spring is here. Think of some of the things that God gave us in nature that are signs of life. How do others know that Jesus is alive in you?

Page 9 - 415 Saints Cyril and Methodius Parish Deer Park, New York Ron Rolheiser, OMI Oblate Father Ron Rolheiser, theologian, teacher, and award-winning author, is President of the Oblate School of Theology in San Antonio, TX He can be contacted through his website www.ronrolheiser.com Loving our Enemies Lorenzo Rosebaugh, an Oblate colleague shot to death in Guatemala two years ago, used to share at Oblate gatherings some advice that Daniel Berrigan once gave him. Lorenzo, contemplating an act of civil disobedience to protest the Vietnam war, was told by Berrigan: If you can't do this without becoming bitter, then don't do it! Do it only if you can do it with a mellow heart! Do it only if you can be sure you won't end up hating those who arrest you! That's hard to do; but, in the end, it's the ultimate challenge, namely, to not hate those who oppose us, to not hate our enemies, to continue to have gracious and forgiving hearts in the face of misunderstanding, bitter opposition, jealousy, anger, hatred, positive mistreatment, and even the threat of death. And to be a disciple of Jesus means that, at some point, we will be hated. We will make enemies. It happened to Jesus and he assured us that it will happen to us. But he also left us the ultimate example of how we need to respond to our enemies. When scripture tells us that Jesus saved the people from their sins, it doesn't just mean that in offering his death to his father as a sacrifice in one eternal act he took away our sins. It also points to his way of living and how, as he demonstrated, forgiving and loving one's enemies take away sin, by absorbing it. Jesus' great act of love, as Kierkegaard once said, is meant to be imitated not just admired. But how do we do this? It seems that we don't know how to love our enemies, that we don't have the strength to forgive. We preach it as an ideal and naively believe that we are doing it. But, for the most part, we aren't. We really don't love and forgive those who oppose us. Too often we are distrustful, disrespectful, bitter, demonizing, and (metaphorically speaking) murderous towards each other. If there is much love and forgiveness of enemies in our lives, it's far from evident, both in our world and in our churches. As Ronald Knox once said, as Christians, we have never really taken seriously Jesus' challenge to love our enemies and to turn the other check. I say this sympathetically. We need help. The old saying is true: To err is human, to forgive is divine. So how do we start? We might start by both acknowledging our failure and admitting our helplessness, individually and as churches. We aren't very loving and forgiving in the face of opposition! Next, we need to highlight this inadequacy and the importance of this failure in our preaching and teaching. Loving our enemies is the real moral and religious litmus test! We don't have a right to call anyone a "cafeteria Christian" or a compromised follower of Christ unless, first of all, we, ourselves, are persons who are gracious, respectful, loving, and forgiving in the face of anyone who opposes us. Let's start, all of us, from this humble place of admittance: We aren't very much like Jesus in the face of opposition. Then, perhaps most important of all, we need to seek each other's help, akin to the dynamics of an Alcoholics' Anonymous meeting. Alone we haven't the strength to love those who hate us. We need grace and community, God's power and others' support, to retain the most difficult of all sobrieties, that is, to walk within a steady strength that enables us to remain warm, gracious, forgiving, loving, and joyful in the face of misunderstanding, jealousy, opposition, bitterness, threat, and murder. Speaking personally, I consider this to be the greatest challenge of my life, morally and humanly. How to love an enemy: How do I not let a jealous glance freeze my heart? How do I not let a bitter word ruin my day? How do I not demonize others when they oppose me? How do I remain sympathetic when I'm misunderstood? How do I remain warm in the face of bitterness? How do I not give in to paranoia when I feel threatened? How do I forgive someone who doesn't want my forgiveness? How do I stop myself from slamming the door of my heart in the face of coldness and rejection? How do I forgive others when my own heart is bitter in self-pity? How do I really love and forgive as Jesus did? I often wonder how Jesus did it. How did he retain peace of mind, warmth in his heart, graciousness in his speech, joy in his life, resiliency in his efforts, the capacity to be grateful, and a sense of humor in the face of misunderstanding, jealousy, hatred, and death threats? He did it by recognizing that this was, singularly, the most important challenge of his life and mission, and, under the weight of that imperative, by falling on his knees to ask for the help of the One who can do in us what we can't do for ourselves.

Page 10 - 415 April 3, 2011 Fourth Sunday of Lent GraceWorks 5648 Hammock Isles Drive, Naples, Fl 34119 ~ E-mail: [email protected] Fourth Sunday in Lent ~ April 3, 2011 ~ CYCLE A www.graceworkspublishing.com ADJUSTING TO THE LIGHT ~ The Text: John 9:1-41 Yonni Barrios is one of the Chilean miners who survived the 69-day entombment half of a mile below the earth’s surface last year. Their story of survival and rescue riveted the world’s attention throughout the ordeal, and made these 33 ordinary men global celebrities. Can you imagine how difficult it must be for these men to emerge from that isolation and reengage in life above ground, to a world that must seem so different to them now? But after two months in darkness, Yonni reported a week later that one of the most difficult aspects of his recovery was adjusting again to the sunlight, which he said felt like needles being poked in his eyes. Interesting, isn’t it? The light that gives sight, that illuminates and magnifies color, that warms our days, and refuels the photosynthesis process within plants—this very light can also be so uncomfortable that it is easier sometimes to clinch one’s eyes shut rather than face its glare. During the long dark wait, how the Chilean miners must have longed to have again those things they lost so suddenly on that ill-fated day of the mine collapse—the warm embrace of family, the creature comforts of home, a home- cooked meal, and a ray of sunlight! But over the weeks they got used to the darkness, to their meager rations, to the isolation. They had to, or they would have succumbed to madness. And truth is, you can get used to the darkness. Like the nocturnal owl or a deep- sea angler fish, we can adapt to the darkness, and actually become more comfortable in the dark rather than in the light. Some people who work night-shifts report a preference for that odd hour. Some truckers prefer driving at night when roads are less crowded. And of course, thieves prefer the darkness, since it helps mask their treachery. A novel and unexpected example of this preference for darkness is the recent trend in restaurants that serve their guests in complete darkness. Once such restaurant, located in Cologne, Germany, is the Unsicht-bar, the “unsighted bar.” There, patrons order their meal in the light, but it is served and eaten in pitch darkness, which is designed to heighten the other senses while eating. One unusual feature of the Unsicht-bar is that all of the wait staff is blind. So restaurant patrons are ushered into an unfamiliar world, but guided with gentle and insightful care by those who are used to the darkness. It is a surreal reversal, as the visually impaired move gracefully and confidently through the darkness, and the sighted become blind and humbly dependent on those they are normally used to helping. Our gospel story for today is Saint John’s account of Jesus healing of the man born blind. It is a story about light, as you might imagine, but the story is crafted so intricately that we might miss some of the subtle details at first glance. This is a story of healing, to be sure, but it is more a story of coming to faith. Notice the steady progression of the healed man’s faith and courageous witness as he is interrogated by the Pharisees. At first he can only recite his own visceral experience, “I was blind, but now I see.” That was the indisputable and unmovable ground of his experience. No matter what else he did not know, and there was much he did not know, that one thing he knew. His dark world, the only world he had ever known, was now bathed in light and color. But soon he found himself in the middle of a circus of debate over the character and integrity of Jesus. One wonders if this first sight of religious authorities arguing over orthodoxy stung his new eyes like needles? Anyway, the poor man was no match for the poisoned questions hurled by his learned interrogators, and yet in his simple innocence and persistence, he proved to be equal to the occasion. And by the end of the lesson he is lecturing the entire assembly, and he has become the interrogator asking the questions of them. Of course, this was not a welcome change of debate for the Pharisees, and they promptly threw him out of their midst. But in the end Jesus appears to the man again, and his journey to the light is complete as he sees in Jesus the true Light of the World; and having fully seen this insight, he worships Christ. This is a story of emerging from the darkness to the light, if ever there was one. But at the same time this formerly blind man is emerging from his darkness to light, the Pharisees are shown descending from the light into their own self-imposed blindness. It is a story dripping with irony. At first the Pharisees are more curious, then perturbed, by the actions of Jesus. But as they press this healed man, their arguments become more and more shaded, and it becomes clear that they are not seeking truth, but only to protect their version of it. They wanted to keep the debate focused on the detail that Jesus healed the man on the Sabbath, and the man kept the focus on the larger detail that he had been blind, and now he could see. Finally, the Pharisees excommunicated the healed man, hurling one final epitaph at him, “You were born utterly in sin, and yet you would teach us?” These Pharisees thought they were speaking for God, and most people of the day granted that authority, since the Pharisees were educated and committed scholars of the teachings of the Mosaic Law and the Prophets. But recall that this whole story began with the disciples asking Jesus if the blind man had sinned, and thus was born blind. To which Jesus said flatly, “no.” Once again, the final verdict of the Pharisees, attempting to speak for God’s perspective on this healed man, was completely and categorically wrong. How crucial it is for us to learn that disaster is not always tied to deserving, nor suffering to sinfulness. And this from no less authority than Jesus Christ, himself. If anyone should know the real heart and action of God in this world, it would be Christ, don’t you think? As the passage concludes, Jesus says, “I came into this world for judgment, so that those who do not see might see, and those who do not see might become blind.” When the Pharisees heard this statement, they remarked with astonishment, “Surely we are not also blind, are we?” And of course, they had just pronounced their own judgment. Bats, angler fish—and now we can add some Pharisees to the list of animals who prefer the darkness to the light. There is no blindness more stubborn than the person whose eyes are clenched tightly shut. Or as Helen Keller once said, “The only thing worse than being blind, is having sight but no vision.” Lord Jesus, heal us from all of our blindnesses, and bring us fully into the light by your patient and loving grace. Amen.

Page 20 - 415 April 3, 2011 Fourth Sunday of Lent Family Life/Liturgy Team Today is Sunday, April 3, 2011 The Parvey Family will lector at this morning’s Mass Hospitality is being hosted by Family Life Visit the Family Life Website at www.sscmfamilylife.org In today’s gospel we hear about how Jesus cured the blind man. How do you think the man felt when he was finally able to see? The man knew that the man who cured him was no ordinary man. Jesus told His disciples that He “is the light of the world”. He touched the man’s eyes and his heart with the light of His love, so that he could “see” that Jesus was the son of God.

How can we make sure that we are always filled with God’s light? We can pray and talk to God. By talking and listening to God, we will “see” the way we should live our lives.

Dear Jesus, I give you my eyes to see others the way you do. I give you my heart to fill with the light of your love. Let your goodness shine out from me so others may see that you are the light of the world. Amen
