FROM THE DESK OF FATHER ERIC

This weekend we celebrate the glorious feast of All Saints Day. We honor the saints, those who have gone on before us, having lived their lives, endured their sufferings and trusted in God, now Our parish seminarians Ryan Amazeen, Michael Hennessy they enjoy the vision of God face to face. This is what we hope for ourselves. We live our Christian lives, striving for sainthood; Our service men and women in fact, we are called to be saints. It’s hard to be a saint in today’s Angela Averill, Charlie Biron, Roland Boisvert, III, world. We are faced with a multitude of challenges that try to tear Randy Donaldson, Jeffrey Michael Fredette, Travis Gelinas, us away from God, the Devil does not want us to be saints, God Michael Haas, Stefan Kammer, Richard LaSalle, Collin Locker, does, so they compete for our souls and, of course, we want God Matthew Lodge, Monique Martineau, Kyle Pelletier, to win. God usually does, but we have to make every effort to live Christopher Prunier, David Vallauri, Elizabeth Wagner, Richard in holiness of body, mind and soul. We all have a favorite saint, a Wagner, Thomas Wagner, Timothy Wagner, Ryan Williams friend in heaven to whom we pray, offering our prayers and they Our sick intercede for us. We light a candle, offer a novena, carry an image Lucy Barrett, David Bilodeau, Lori Bishop, Merin Blake, or wear a medal bearing their image. Perhaps we have gone on Ed Blais, Ethan Brown, Kevin Brown, Anne Foye Campaiola, pilgrimages to holy sites and we view the relics of a saint. Relics Dominick Ceppetelli, Riley Crowder, Jamie Cucinotta, serve as a bridge between heaven and earth and to remind us that Lucille DeRochers, Paul DesRochers, William Deveau, Kathy the saints are with us and that they are with God. Dion, Roger Drolet, Jaxson Field, Donna Fowler, This day gives us three themes, intercession, the saints’ concern to Norah Lynne Frank, Anet Garneau, Mary Gavin, Richard Groux, help us and the Eucharistic, which leads us to the banquet of Charlie Hunt, Patrick Joyce, Christine Labrecque, Nancy Lorenz, heaven. Like I mentioned before, we pray to the saints who Helene Nya, Judith Maurer, John Meehan, Lee Morin, intercede for us with our concerns, our needs and desires. With Joseph O’Sullivan, Monique Planchet, June Prunier, Roger Prunier, patience, we await God’s response. The saints indeed hear us and Megan Ross, Dolores St. Pierre, Colin Swegart, bring to God our plea, which brings us to our second theme, the Richard Walas, Dan Webb, Abigail Yeomans saints’ concern. They want to help and save us because they have shared in the same human experiences that we endure. They know EXPOSITION OF THE BLESSED SACRAMENT what it is to be in pain, to find themselves in hopeless situations, to pray fervently for the needs of others and to strive for holiness despite sinfulness. Almighty God and Father, By the mystery of the cross, you have made us strong; You have sealed us as your own. Look kindly upon your servants, Now freed from the bonds of mortality, And count them among your saints in heaven. We ask this through Christ our Lord. Amen.

Relics: Remembrances of our Catholic Ancestors

Reserved in the Cathedral reliquaries are 60 known relics gathered from the first century; tiny fabric from the veil of Mary, to as recent as cloth from the habit of 19th Century Saint Elizabeth Ann Seton. When the first marble altars were dedicated (1894) relics of Saints and Martyrs familiar to us were placed in the center stone: Hilary, Boniface and Agatha. These relics consist mostly of a very small quantity of the ashes of these saints, small enough to be held in ordinary powder paper. On this Feast of All Saints and All Souls the relics of the Blessed Virgin Mary, her most Chaste Spouse, Saint Joseph and a sliver of the True Cross will be on display on the Reredos of the Cathedral Sanctuary.
