U.S. Energy Information Administration | Annual Coal Report 2019 iii Preface The Annual Coal Report (ACR) provides information about U.S. coal production, number of mines, productive capacity, recoverable reserves, employment, productivity, consumption, stocks, and prices to a wide audience, including Congress, federal and state agencies, the coal industry, and the general public. EIA publishes this report to fulfill data collection and dissemination responsibilities under the Federal Energy Administration Act of 1974 (Public Law 93-275), as amended. Coal production, number of mines, employment, and productivity are based on the U.S. Department of Labor’s Mine Safety and Health Administration’s Form 7000-2, Quarterly Mine Employment and Coal Production Report. Productive capacity, recoverable reserves, and prices are based on EIA’s Form EIA-7A, Annual Survey of Coal Production and Preparation. Consumption and stocks are based on EIA survey forms. This report is EIA’s 44th annual report on the coal industry, and it continues the series formerly included in the Minerals Yearbook, which the U.S. Bureau of Mines previously published. All data for 2019 and previous years are final. The Office of Energy Production, Conversion, & Delivery acknowledges the cooperation of the respondents in supplying the information published in the Annual Coal Report, and we appreciate the valuable assistance of state coal mining agencies and the U.S. Department of Labor, Mine Safety and Health Administration.
