What strikes us at once is the comprehensive character of the current undertaking. Many contemporary books deal with particular aspects of the inner life, but this one is different in that it deals with an astonishing variety of important topics, much of its freshness of treatment arising from its boldness. The author has undertaken to examine a wide spectrum of experience, from confession to simplicity to joy. Since the finished product is the outcome of wide reading and careful thinking, it is not the sort of book that can be dashed off quickly or cheaply. The sources of insight are varied, the chief ones being the Holy Scriptures, and the recognized classics of devotion, but these are not the only fountains from which the author draws. The careful reader soon recognizes a large indebtedness to secular thinkers as well. In view of the fact that the author is himself a Quaker, it is not surpris- ing that the contributions of the classic Quaker writers are prominent. These include the works of George Fox, John Woolman, Hannah Whitall Smith, Thomas Kelly, and many more. The purpose here is not sectarian but genuinely ecumenical, since important insights ought never to be limited to the group from which they arise. What we are given, accordingly, is an example of the catholicity of sharing. The treatment of simplicity is especially valuable, partly be- ix x / RICHARD J. FOSTER cause it is not simple. Indeed the ten “controlling principles” con- cerning simplicity, which are explained in Chapter 6, are themselves sufficient justification for the appearance of another book on the INTRODUCTION spiritual life.     BOOK REVIEWS THE JEWS IN THE GREEK AGE. By Elias J. Bickerman. Cambridge, Mass.: Harvard University, 1988. Pp. xiii + 338. $30. The late Professor Bickerman (1897-1981) was recognized as a leading authority not only in the study of Hellenism but also in the particular area of Hellenistic Judaism. His most famous books were Der Gott der Makkabàer (1937; English, 1979) and Institutions des Séleucides (1938). His technical articles have been gathered in the three-volume collection Studies in Jewish and Christian History (1976, 1980, 1986). He was widely admired for his mastery of the primary sources pertaining to the Hellenistic era and for his breadth of learning. He was indeed a scholar's scholar. In his latter years he served as professor of ancient history at Columbia University in New York and research fellow at Jewish Theo­ logical Seminary of America. Although B. had completed the first draft of this survey of pre- Maccabean Judaism in 1963, he was revising his manuscript until shortly before his death. His manuscript has been prepared for publication by Shari Friedman, a member of the Jewish Theological Seminary research staff. Albert Baumgarten, professor of Jewish history at Bar-Ilan Uni­ versity, assisted with the final preparation and compiled a 15-page general bibliography.     The medical system is strategic for women’s liberation. It is the guardian of reproductive technology – birth control, abortion, and the means for safe childbirth. But the medical system is also strategic to women’s oppression. Medical science has been one of the most powerful sources of sexist ideology in our culture. Theories of male superiority ultimately rest on biology. Medicine stands between biology and social policy, between the “mysterious” world of the laboratory and everyday life. It makes public interpretations of biological theory; it dispenses the medical fruits of scientifi c advances. Biology discovers hormones; doctors make public judgments on whether “hormonal unbalances” make women unfi t for public offi ce. More generally, biology traces the origins of disease; doctors pass judgment on who is sick and who is well. Medicine’s prime contribution to sexist ideology has been to describe women as sick, and as potentially sickening to men.     Creating Holy People and People Places Holy on theCreating Periphery Creating Holy People and Places on the Periphery A Study of the Emergence of Cults of Native Saints in the Ecclesiastical Provinces of Lund and Uppsala from the Eleventh to the Thirteenth Centuries During the medieval period, the introduction of a new belief system brought profound societal change to Scandinavia. One of the elements of this new religion was the cult of saints. This thesis examines the emergence of new cults of saints native to the region that became the ecclesiastical provinces of Lund and Uppsala in the twelfth century. The study examines theearliest, extant evidence for these cults, in particular that found in liturgical fragments. By analyzing and then comparing the relationship that each native saint’s cult had to the Christianization, the study reveals a mutually beneficial bond between these cults and a newly emerging Christian society.     Joseph summer’s The Shakespeare Concerts Series 2 TheFairOphelia Joseph summer’s The Shakespeare Concerts Series The Fair Ophelia is the second offering in Navona’s THE SHAKESPEARE CONCERTS SERIES, consisting of diverse settings of Ophelia’s mad scene and Gertrude’s reflection on Ophelia’s death from Shakespeare’s The Tragedy of Hamlet, Prince of Denmark by Berlioz, Brahms, Schumann, Saint-Saëns, Strauss, Cage, and Summer. The parallax views of Ophelia experienced by the composers present the listener with an unusual opportunity to hear Ophelia in a three dimensional perspective. Is this tragic Shakespearean maiden mad because she’s angry with those characters who inhabit her world, or should we be angry with those characters who inhibit her predilections, and thus have made mad the hapless heroine? The next offering in Navona’s THE SHAKESPEARE CONCERTS SERIES is GODDESSES, featuring The Tempest’s three goddesses: Juno, Ceres, and Iris in a setting of Honour, Riches, Marriage-Blessing by Joseph Summer.
