BOOK REVIEWS THE JEWS IN THE GREEK AGE. By Elias J. Bickerman. Cambridge, Mass.: Harvard University, 1988. Pp. xiii + 338. $30. The late Professor Bickerman (1897-1981) was recognized as a leading authority not only in the study of Hellenism but also in the particular area of Hellenistic Judaism. His most famous books were Der Gott der Makkabàer (1937; English, 1979) and Institutions des Séleucides (1938). His technical articles have been gathered in the three-volume collection Studies in Jewish and Christian History (1976, 1980, 1986). He was widely admired for his mastery of the primary sources pertaining to the Hellenistic era and for his breadth of learning. He was indeed a scholar's scholar. In his latter years he served as professor of ancient history at Columbia University in New York and research fellow at Jewish Theo logical Seminary of America. Although B. had completed the first draft of this survey of pre- Maccabean Judaism in 1963, he was revising his manuscript until shortly before his death. His manuscript has been prepared for publication by Shari Friedman, a member of the Jewish Theological Seminary research staff. Albert Baumgarten, professor of Jewish history at Bar-Ilan Uni versity, assisted with the final preparation and compiled a 15-page general bibliography. The theme of the volume is stability and change in Jewish society during the first centuries of the Greek age, from the fourth century B.C. until approximately 175 B.C. The first part ("before and after Alex ander") surveys the evidence for the early encounters between Jews and Greeks in the land of Israel and the Diaspora. -

Each volume has grown in size. Volume One has 150 pages, Volume Two (1966) has 200 pages, and Volume Three (1971), 250 pages. Volume Four (1976) has more than 400 pages. One day, Lord permitting, we shall offer a study in Volume Four of all the references to the Holy Spirit in the Old Testament. At present we want the present material in Volume Four to get into the hands and hearts of those who have waited so patiently for its publication. Please notice the rather complete bibliography in each of the volumes. Such extensive publishing on the subject of the Holy Spirit should give some indication of His importance to many people. In the preparation of Volume Four, we have made ourselves acquainted with several books on each verse we have considered on the Holy Spirit. We want our readers to know of the splendid resources available. We quote from a rather large number of authors. Buy these books and read them. You need not agree with everything you read in a book, but read it. Our estimate of the worth of such books many times accompanies our quotations from them. -

The medical system is strategic for women’s liberation. It is the guardian of reproductive technology – birth control, abortion, and the means for safe childbirth. It holds the promise of Complaints freedom from hundreds of unspoken fears and complaints that have handicapped women throughout history. When we demand AND control over our own bodies, we are making that demand above all to the medical system. It is the keeper of the keys. But the medical system is also strategic to women’s oppression. Medical science has been one of the most powerful sources of sexist ideology in our culture. Justifi cations for sexual Disorders discrimination – in education, in jobs, in public life – ultimately The Sexual Politics of Sickness rest on the one thing that differentiates women from men: their bodies. Theories of male superiority ultimately rest on biology. Medicine stands between biology and social policy, between the “mysterious” world of the laboratory and everyday life. It makes public interpretations of biological theory; it dispenses the medical fruits of scientifi c advances. Biology discovers hormones; doctors make public judgments on whether “hormonal unbalances” make women unfi t for public offi ce. More generally, biology traces the origins of disease; doctors pass judgment on who is sick and who is well. Medicine’s prime contribution to sexist ideology has been to describe women as sick, and as potentially sickening to men. Creating Holy People and People Places Holy on theCreating Periphery Creating Holy People and Places on the Periphery A Study of the Emergence of Cults of Native Saints in the Ecclesiastical Provinces of Lund and Uppsala from the Eleventh to the Thirteenth Centuries During the medieval period, the introduction of a new belief system brought profound societal change to Scandinavia. One of the elements of this new religion was the cult of saints. This thesis examines the emergence of new cults of saints native to the region that became the ecclesiastical provinces of Lund and Uppsala in the twelfth century. The study examines theearliest, extant evidence for these cults, in particular that found in liturgical fragments. By analyzing and then comparing the relationship that each native saint’s cult had to the Christianization, the study reveals a mutually beneficial bond between these cults and a newly emerging Christian society. Joseph summer’s The Shakespeare Concerts Series 2 TheFairOphelia Joseph summer’s The Shakespeare Concerts Series The Fair Ophelia is the second offering in Navona’s THE SHAKESPEARE CONCERTS SERIES, consisting of diverse settings of Ophelia’s mad scene and Gertrude’s reflection on Ophelia’s death from Shakespeare’s The Tragedy of Hamlet, Prince of Denmark by Berlioz, Brahms, Schumann, Saint-Saëns, Strauss, Cage, and Summer. The parallax views of Ophelia experienced by the composers present the listener with an unusual opportunity to hear Ophelia in a three dimensional perspective. Is this tragic Shakespearean maiden mad because she’s angry with those characters who inhabit her world, or should we be angry with those characters who inhibit her predilections, and thus have made mad the hapless heroine? The next offering in Navona’s THE SHAKESPEARE CONCERTS SERIES is GODDESSES, featuring The Tempest’s three goddesses: Juno, Ceres, and Iris in a setting of Honour, Riches, Marriage-Blessing by Joseph Summer. Other highlights are Andrea Chenoweth singing Ariel songs by Thomas Linley accompanied by Massachusetts’ renowned period ensemble, Arcadia Players, under the direction of Ian Watson; mezzo-soprano Kellie Van Horn performing Shall I compare Thee To A Summer’s Day with Jessica Lizak on flute; and In The Old Age Black Was Not Counted Fair with tenor Luke Grooms, baritone Paul Soper, and Clark Matthews on French horn. 2 Program Notes BY JOSEPH SUMMER 3 Introduction There being a myriad of interpretations of the character of Ophelia from Shakespeare’sThe Tragedy of Hamlet, Prince of Den- mark, when it was time for me to create program notes for the 2012 concert, it seemed to me that like the program itself, within which seven composers’ interpretations were realized, the program books should reflect this diversity; ergo, instead of creating a singular template from which every copy would be manufactured, I drew up many different versions. -
