Intoxicating Bio of Elaine Stritch | Newsday 10/28/2019 'Still Here' review: Intoxicating bio of Elaine Stritch | Newsday ENTERTAINMENT / BOOKS 'Still Here' review: Intoxicating bio of Elaine Stritch For company in an early New York apartment, Elaine Stritch maintained a large collection of European dolls. (1950-55) Photo Credit: New York Public Library By Kelly McMasters Special to Newsday Updated October 27, 2019 6:00 AM STILL HERE: The Madcap, Nervy, Singular Life of Elaine Stritch by Alexandra Jacobs (Farrar, Straus & Giroux, 352 pp., $27) Broadway biographies bring with them a certain expectation of bright lights and booze, hard-edged glamour and gossip. When the subject in question is the legendary Elaine Stritch, amp those expectations up tenfold, and add in an armload of cussing. Luckily, under debut author Alexandra Jacobs’ serene and critical hand, "Still Here: The Madcap, Nervy, Singular Life of Elaine Stritch" also offers vulnerability alongside vulgarity and authenticity alongside the expected avarice. Stritch died in 2014 at 89, and spent seven decades under stage lights. Jacobs utilizes the massive cache of information the actress left in her wake, including copious interviews and her archives. This meticulous research allows for the conjuring of a surprising and complex realness that serves as a deep and resounding undercurrent to the public persona so widely known. There is nothing necessarily explosive or sensational here, though there are plenty of big names (Marlon Brando, Warren Beatty, Angela Lansbury among them); it is the way Jacobs tracks the quiet darknesses of Stritch’s private life that gives this book its teeth. Lainey, as she was nicknamed, was born in Detroit in 1925, under the tight hand of Prohibition and the height of the American car craze, the third of three sisters and daughter to a B.F. Goodrich executive. ““When Elaine was born, the chandeliers shook, and they never stopped,” [her sister] Georgene became fond of saying.” The same can be said for this biography, which dashes and darts from scene to scene with dizzying speed at times. Names, places and details are carried forth on the forceful ow of Stritch’s energy. She seems always to be searching for the right boyfriend, acting studio, apartment, nightclub or gig, trading up as quickly as she was able, yet never attaining the recognition she craved. Jacobs captures Stritch’s ambivalent relationship with stardom early on. “Once, shut out on the porch to play and at a loss for how to amuse herself, Elaine fatally swatted enough ies to spell out her name. It was her way of supposing her name in lights,” according to her friend Julie Keyes. “And that’s what billing is about,” Elaine told her. “Dead [expletive] ies.” Doomed to a seemingly endless string of understudy, matinee or summer stock versions of coveted roles, Stritch leaned on her humor and smarts instead of looks, and increasingly used champagne and vodka stingers to self-medicate a debilitating performance anxiety. ADVERTISING In the chapter “From Star Maid to Bar Maid," Jacobs charts what she calls Stritch’s “absolute nadir.” Her drinking — on stage and off — had made Stritch a bad bet on Broadway. She was 43, and though she’d had a string of boyfriends, there was no lasting love and no children; she was in debt, her dog died, and then, “on June 22, 1969, Judy Garland’s fth husband had found Judy dead, at 47, sitting on the toilet in their London home.” The death shook her. Only after Stritch’s friend, Lee Israel, wrote a rousing prole of her (and her fabled alcoholism) in The New York Times, did Hal Prince, “Broadway hitmaker,” call Stritch and invite her to be part of his new musical. "Company," the masterful acidic exploration of New York marriages, brought Stritch together with Sondheim, and propelled her to the next, and most powerful, act of her storied career. https://www.newsday.com/entertainment/books/still-here-elaine-stritch-1.37752100 1/4 10/28/2019 'Still Here' review: Intoxicating bio of Elaine Stritch | Newsday Stritch often joked with her close friend and condant, gossip columnist Dorothy Kilgallen, whether it was better for a woman to be beautiful or funny, as if those were their only options. (“Funny,” Stritch reported to Kilgallen during a 3 a.m. phone call.) The power of Jacobs’ biography is the way she sets Stritch’s story against the canvas of a shifting century, allowing us to watch as the world expands beyond these limiting boxes for female performers, and cheer as Stritch was able to expand herself. After "Company," Jacobs observes, Stritch was nally “free of being a romantic lead, she could be a heroine.” She was all along, of course. It just took the world seven decades to notice. Making her cabaret debut, Malone will salute 14 of her favorite Broadway actresses who have been an influence on her during her musical theatre career. The audience will hear selections made famous by Fanny Brice, Carol Burnett, Betty Buckley, Carol Channing, Judy Holliday, Angela Lansbury, Patti LuPone, Mary Martin, Ethel Merman, Liza Minnelli, Bernadette Peters, Barbra Streisand, Elaine Stritch, and Nancy Walker. On making her cabaret debut: “The idea of putting together an original cabaret act where you’re standing on stage for ninety minutes straight has always sounded daunting to me,” Malone said. “I’ve had the idea for this particular cabaret format for a few years. I felt the time was right to challenge myself, and I couldn’t be more proud to debut this cabaret on the very stage that offered me my first musical theatre experience as a nine-year-old in the Moonlight’s very first musical Oliver! directed by Kathy Brombacher.” Malone can relate to the fact that the leading ladies she has chosen to celebrate are all attached to iconic comedic roles. “I learned at a very young age that getting laughs is golden,” she said.

Without fail, we return from the Festival energized by the films and inspired by the expert advice from filmmakers. So I started thinking about ways to recreate that energy in the class- room, eventually arriving at the concept for this DVD. This DVD is a chance to hear from emerging and seasoned filmmakers as they discuss technical, legal, ethical and busi- ness issues of documentary film. It was created to be watched in brief topical sections, although it can also be watched straight through. We’ve organized the subjects as they might be encoun- tered in creating a film, from finding good stories to getting your film out there. This booklet also contains short discussion ques- tions to be used in class or by aspiring filmmakers to think more about the ideas and insights offered by our interviewees.

More preparation for the Nicolson. Saw the same comic little man (comic to look at, long face like Robertson Hare, big ears), but a dear. Loves birds and motorbikes and has my views on medical things exactly. Said, after looking into my eyes with that light, ‘Thoroughly good healthy eyes’ as he always does, and that my sight had scarcely changed since 1974 when he first examined me. I have now found the bit of paper onto which I copied his, K’s letter to Simon with the first IM tape. Every word is precious, to see him writing to someone else. I expect he would be cross, but I don’t care. Dear Simon Enclosed is the promised tape. As arranged, I shall hire the equipment for the week Saturday 3 August to 10 August, but this time I shall only hire the bare bones of what I need so that we can get right down to the essence of the composition and save money. We can sort out the ‘sound’ at a later date. It was such a pleasure for me to be working creatively with you – all your ideas are slowly but surely (sic) becoming part of me, and I look forward to bodying them forth for you. Love, Kevin Moving to me because there are three phrases straight from me, ‘Bare bones and ‘essence’, ‘Such a pleasure’, ‘Bodying them forth.’ Imagine K five yrs ago saying ‘such a pleasure.’ And Edna told me that his letter to her, that I delivered from Ed’s, finished, ‘I think of you and hope you are well often.

While no one knows what the future may hold, we remain focused on implementing our strategic plan at Point Park University. Over the next year, our Office of Institutional Research will be conducting a study with the purpose of identifying the attributes of our successful students at Point Park and focusing our efforts on seeking out potential students who would also be a good fit for our University. Our goal is to help students thrive and to provide a positive educational experience despite the economic downturn. Quality student experience is one of our guiding principles and to ensure students’ needs are met, we recently launched a new initiative titled STARS or Striving to Achieve Remark- able Service. This initiative was developed by a committee comprised of staff from offices and departments throughout the University. As we strive for continuous improvement in all of our processes, our focus on service will distinguish us with new and prospective students and better position us to meet the challenges of our current economic environment. Photo by Ric Evans Point Park is currently meeting our projections for enrollment and we are paying very close attention to our revenues and expenditures, as well as the financial aid needs of our students.
