Bicycle Thieves
BICYCLE THIEVES Vittorio De Sica Sub : Film Studies (FE 3) By : Farah Faisal 2018-2021 Vittorio De Sica • Italian director and actor, a leading figure in the neorealistmovement. • Four of the films he directed won Academy Awards: Sciuscià and Bicycle Thieves(honorary), while Yesterday, Today and Tomorrow and Il giardino dei Finzi Contini won the Academy Award for Best Foreign Language Film. • Bicycle Thieves helped establish the permanent Best Foreign Film Award. These two films are considered part of the canon of classic cinema.Bicycle Thieves was cited by Turner Classic Movies as one of the 15 most influential films in cinema history.[ Analysis • The setting of this movie takes place in post-war Rome, where economic struggles are commonplace. • The film clearly contains many elements of the Classical Hollywood Narrative (the ending being an important exception), and it makes excellent use of film form, mise-en-scene, and cinematography to tell the story in a compelling way. • The film follows Antonio Ricci, the main character, during his search for his stolen bicycle. • The film focuses on the main character, Antonio Ricci, and his son, Bruno, throughout. Antonio’s main goal is to get a job, but it quickly changes into the main plot of the movie: to locate his stolen bicycle so that he can return to work. • The film progresses in a logical, linear fashion, having no major lapses in time. In addition, viewers are taken on an emotional journey, feeling the frustration and desperation of Antonio as his search continues. • While the film meets many of the characteristics of the Classical Hollywood Narrative, there was one important difference: There was no happy ending in this film. -

2020 July Newsletter
Newsletter July 2020 Lake Macquarie U3A Inc, PO Box 782, TORONTO NSW 2283 Email: [email protected] Website: lakemacquarie.u3anet.org.au Patron: Greg Piper MP From the President . Hi everyone My Irish forbears would spin in their graves if they knew how much I have recently sympathised with Scott and Gladys’s COVID dilemmas. Your LMU3A committee have looked at our issues every which way to see what we can do to get moving again. While we know most of you accept the uncertainty currently plaguing (couldn’t resist the pun) the globe, your committee is also aware of those pining for the social, physical and intellectual stimuli of U3A. Although the criterion for group gathering is changing for the better, we need notice to get the machinery moving and take into account all the issues. We can’t endanger our members or burden course leaders and clerks with unmanageable risks. We also need to observe our legal obligations. For these reasons Term 3, due to commence on 27 July, WILL NOT GO AHEAD. Term 4 due to start on 12 October SHOULD go ahead, though it’s likely this will be in a reduced capacity. Assessments are currently underway to identify courses which could work in open-air venues or which could be held indoors and still meet the social distancing requirements which we have to assume will continue. WE WILL CONTACT YOU in September to let you know Term 4 status. Make sure your email address is current or, if you don’t have email, your phone number. -

Italian Films (Updated April 2011)
Language Laboratory Film Collection Wagner College: Campus Hall 202 Italian Films (updated April 2011): Agata and the Storm/ Agata e la tempesta (2004) Silvio Soldini. Italy The pleasant life of middle-aged Agata (Licia Maglietta) -- owner of the most popular bookstore in town -- is turned topsy-turvy when she begins an uncertain affair with a man 13 years her junior (Claudio Santamaria). Meanwhile, life is equally turbulent for her brother, Gustavo (Emilio Solfrizzi), who discovers he was adopted and sets off to find his biological brother (Giuseppe Battiston) -- a married traveling salesman with a roving eye. Bicycle Thieves/ Ladri di biciclette (1948) Vittorio De Sica. Italy Widely considered a landmark Italian film, Vittorio De Sica's tale of a man who relies on his bicycle to do his job during Rome's post-World War II depression earned a special Oscar for its devastating power. The same day Antonio (Lamberto Maggiorani) gets his vehicle back from the pawnshop, someone steals it, prompting him to search the city in vain with his young son, Bruno (Enzo Staiola). Increasingly, he confronts a looming desperation. Big Deal on Madonna Street/ I soliti ignoti (1958) Mario Monicelli. Italy Director Mario Monicelli delivers this deft satire of the classic caper film Rififi, introducing a bungling group of amateurs -- including an ex-jockey (Carlo Pisacane), a former boxer (Vittorio Gassman) and an out-of-work photographer (Marcello Mastroianni). The crew plans a seemingly simple heist with a retired burglar (Totó), who serves as a consultant. But this Italian job is doomed from the start. Blow up (1966) Michelangelo Antonioni. -
