    Mathematical Models for Cricket Team Selection Hamish Thorburn Dr Michael Forbes The University of Queensland 26/02/2015 1 1 Abstract An attempt was made to try and select the Australian Test Cricket Team for then-upcoming series against India in December-January 2014-2015. Data was collected pertaining to 37 Australian cricket players, relating to both recent form (the 12 months prior to commencement of the project) and career form across multiple formats of the game. The team was selected using a mixed-integer- programming (MIP) model, after processing the statistics collected to create usable parameters for the model. It was found that the team selected by the MIP model shared only 5 of the 11 players with the actual team selected by the Australian Board of Selectors to compete in the series. When altering parameters of the model, it was found that the batting diversity of the team could be doubled while only losing 0.008 of the available talent of selected players. The reduced costs were calculated to determine how close unselected players were to being selected, and what they would have to increase their batting/bowling averages to be considered for selection. Finally, we compared the ICC player ratings to our calculated batting and bowling indices, to try to determine the optimal weighting between the different statistics. It was found that batting average was most important in batting performance (but was more important in test matches than one-day matches) and that bowling average and economy were equally important in bowling performance. 2 Introduction 2.1 The Game of Cricket Cricket is a sport composing of opposing teams of 11 players each side.

    Between the teams – Victoria v Tasmania The first contest between Victoria and Tasmania took place on open ground at the Launceston Racecourse on February 11 and 12, 1851, a site that was later developed as the NTCA Ground. In what is now regarded as the inaugural first-class match in Australia, Tasmania won a low-scoring contest by three wickets. Although the Sheffield Shield competition commenced in 1892/93, Tasmania was not admitted until 1977/78. It initially competed on a restricted basis, meeting each state only once per season, before being granted a full programme of home-and-away matches from 1982/83. Since finishing last in 10 of its first 18 Shield seasons, Tasmania has in recent years been consistently competitive, winning the competition for the first time in 2006/07 and repeating its success in 2010/11 and 2012/13. Visitors and athletes alike feel the build up to the Regatta from early spring as soon as work starts on the course and facilities. Once the event entries are in and the qualifiers over with, the tension begins to mount and at the draw in Henley Town Hall you will see many Leander tracksuits waiting excitedly to see who they have drawn for the first races. This year, spectators were not disappointed as Leander athletes were again involved in some fantastic races and had some well deserved wins. Our success started with Nick Middleton and Jack Hockley who, following their win in the Prince of Wales Challenge Cup last year, Captain Richard Egington teamed up with Alan Sinclair and John Collins leads the way with a win to take the trophy for a second year. Coached in the Stewards’ again by Matt Beechey, this is the first time Challenge Cup. since the event’s conception that it has been won by one club in consecutive years.     Overview Mortlake Rowing Club is the oldest component part if the present-day MAABC. It was established in 1877. Next came Anglian Boat Club, which started in 1878. It merged with Mortlake Rowing Club in 1962 to become Mortlake Anglian Boat Club. Chiswick Rowing Club was the result of the amalgamation of two local clubs, Bedford Park and Bedford Park & District and later merged with Mortlake Anglian Boat Club to become Mortlake Anglian & Chiswick Boat Club. Alpha Women's Rowing Club formed in 1927 and was to merge with Mortlake Anglian & Chiswick Boat Club in 1984, since when we have been: Mortlake Anglian & Alpha Boat Club. The Origins of Mortlake Institute Rowing Club Based on contributions from Mike Williamson, Les Rule (in his late 80s and who joined the club in 1936) and Gordon Hilliker in May, 2003. Unfortunately the official documents dealing with the club history have long since been mislaid, so we will have to rely on our recollections and hearsay. The club was founded in 1877 as Mortlake Institute Rowing Club boating from a shed along side “The Ship” public house. In the early 1900s plans were developed for building the stone river embankment between Watney Brewery and Kew. We presume that the councils of Richmond and Mortlake decided that as all the rowing clubs on the Surrey side of the river were based at Putney they should have one between the two towns. The site chosen was a strip of land between the river and the crematorium, steps were incorporated in the new embankment for easy access to the river and two 1914- 18 army huts were acquired, one for boats the other as a clubhouse and changing room just behind the steps.
