Mervyn Wegener. President Hume Australian Football League.

DES KENNEDY Des Kennedy was a great supporter of Country Sport and was an outstanding administrator. Des died whilst in office - he was serving in his 31st term as the Hume League Secretary.

Des was a Life Member of the Hume League and a V.C.F.L. Medal Holder - so respected was his contribution and his esteem.

The Hume League has decided to recognise both the memory of Des Kennedy and the excellent service he provided over those many years, by the awarding of a medal to the player judged best afield in the Senior Grand Final. DES KENNEDY This medal - the “Des Kennedy Memorial Medal” - will be awarded by Des’s great friend, Merv Wegener (Pres. of the League, Life Member and dual Kelly Azzi Medallist).

Des Kennedy died suddenly in 1992 whilst serving in his 31st term and Hume League Secretary. His daughter, Dominque was tragically killed in 1988. To honour their memory, Des’ widow Jaquie donated a stained window positioned behind the altar in the recently restored St. Mary’s Catholic Church, Walla Walla.

St. Mary’s was Des’ home place of worship and the gesture is a fitting tribute to a devoted husband and father.

(8) “THE BIG SHED”

Another innovation at Walbundrie is what is simply called " The Big Shed". Erected by the Grounds Committee ( with support from the Hume League ) primarily for the shearing demonstrations/competitions at the Walbundrie Show, the shed is a most welcome appointment for the football finals. Much of the food and beverages supplied by the catering clubs emanates from within the shed itself - allowing for spacious preparation and distribution points assisting caterers and patrons alike. In addition the shed itself provides shelter for both wet and sunny days.

The "Big Shed was christened at the Leagues Family Day celebrating 75 years of the Hume League - and indeed its "head was wet" as the rains arrived - where the shed provided shelter from the elements for the many followers of the League who celebrated that milestone.

(11) HUME LEAGUE TRAINERS ASSOCIATION

PRESIDENT: FRAN JONES SECRETARY: SIMONE ALEXANDER The Hume League Trainers Association would like to congratulate the Hume League on its 75th Anniversary and wish the League continued success for its football and netball competition. The Trainers Association has also had a long history with the League celebrating 25 years as an association. The inaugural meeting in 1983 had the League nominate Mal Geard as President, Ross Krause as Secretary and the Trainers Association elected Max Webb as Vice-President and Chris Scholz as Assistant Treasurer/Secretary. The Assocation has decided to have a jacket designed for all trainers and will incorporate a commemorative 25 years anniversary logo on the jacket. The Association has had a very productive year again with many new trainers signing on, the Rand/Walbundrie team has taken up the challenge and has many new trainers, congratulations to RWT for their commitment to their players. Other League teams have also enlisted a healthy number of new recruits. The Trainers Association would like to welcome the menbers of the Coreen League to our Association and we look forward to your continued involvement. The League has yet again provided the Trainers Association with great support through the provision of trainers passes to qualified trainers and supporting training and education initiatives. The association ran an evening for trainers association members inviting Zane Fraser from the RFL and Barry Pumpa from Murray Magpies, they are both very qualified in their field, they presented a hands on demonstratio regarding the treatment and rehabilitation of injured players. The evening was agreed to be a great success by all with future education sessions to be arranged for 2009. These evenings are a valuable tool for trainers and clubs, since the level 1 course is only a small insight into the knowledge that is required for a trainer to have when dealing with day to day injuries that arise. The Trainers Association would encourage all trainers to come along and be involved in these education sessions. The Association together with the League is developing an education session for the management of infection and infectious diseases, to be run at the beginning of season 2009, these initiatives are vital to the maintenance of a well-informed and progressive League. As a note of interest the Hume League was approached by the RFL and FFL to assist them in setting up their own trainers league, we were only too happy to assist and are pleased to announce that they have their own association and look forward to the same success that the Hume League Trainers Association has enjoyed. To finish, I would like to thank the Trainers Association Secretary Simone Alexander in her first year as Secretary she has done a tremendous job in assembling name and contacts of trainers, to League President Mev Wegener and the committee for their support and to all the trainers that attend our meetings and education sessions your input is invaluable and very necessary. Hume League Trainers Association President, Fran Jones.

c Smart Banking - SPONSORSHIP - The Hume Football League and Netball Association again received generous sponsorship from WAW Credit Union, Sportspower Albury and Springdale Heights Tavern, Lavington. With the "sponsorship dollar" both organiscations were able to continue to actively support both the Trainers and Club Umpires as they strive to update qualifications and maintain their support of their Clubs and players at the highest level. WAW will be conducting a competition again this year and patrons are urged to visit their stand and attempt to win a digital camera. This sponsorship also allowed the League to suitably outfit the representative team which competed in the NSW Country Championships at Wagga. The League and Association acknowledges this continued sponsorship and encourages all concerned to suport these businesses.

(33) Hume Netball Association Notes

This year as you know our competition has grown in size from 11 teams to 15 with the inclusion of the four Coreen clubs, Billabong Crows, CDHBU, Coleambally and Rennie. We would like to thank them for their efforts in meeting the required criteria of the Hume Netball Association in such a short time. They have worked very hard to comply with our Constitution and By-Laws and congratulate them for their efforts and their good sportsmanship throughout the year. Thanks to the Hume Netball Club Delegates and teams for their very positive attitude towards the Coreen clubs this season. Everyone has made a fantastic effort in making them feel welcome in our netball association.

Congratulations to Merv Wegener for his award from the NSW AFL for Life Membership. This achievement is thoroughly deserved as Merv has been totally committed to the betterment of our local football league over many years. He has also strived to work with the Hume Netball Association to make football and netball in our district one of the most envied Leagues in Southern NSW. Congratulations also to Barry Malone for receiving Life Membership for the Hume Football League.

Thank you to Nicola Barrie from the Greater Southern Area Health Service for her tremendous effort in promoting the “Kicking Goals for Rural Mental Health” in our League this season. This has been a very worthwhile cause for our communities and Nicola went well above her work commitments to promote this ongoing problem.

The Hume Netball Association has had another busy, but successful season in 2008 with many grades finishing very close on the ladders, with 12 out of 15 clubs being represented in finals. The C Grade, C Reserve, Intermediates and Junior teams vying for finals were not decided until the last round, so that is fantastic for netball. Well done to the Jindera Netball Club for having 6 teams in the finals this year. Special thanks to Lee Shipard from Albury for organising our umpires for the Finals again this year. Lee has done a terrific job and we appreciate her own volunteer time to organise this.

Thanks again to our major sponsors this year, WAW Credit Union, Sportspower and Springdale Heights. Your continued support of our association is greatly appreciated.

Congratulations to all the Best & Fairest trophy winners at the Hume League Vote Count. Well done also to the Jindera Football and Netball Clubs for winning the combined Club Championship trophy and to Jindera Netball Club for winning the Hume Netball Club Championship Award. Special thanks to Paul Harangozo from Coronet Jewellers for kindly donating $100 vouchers for all Four Senior Grade Netball Best & Fairest winners. Your generous donation is greatly appreciated by the Hume Netball Association.

Congratulations to all the teams who have made the Grand Final today. Thanks to Merv and Barry again for your continued support of the Hume Netball Association. Presentations will take place after each grade is finished today. A trophy for the most valuable player in each Grand Final will also be awarded.
