Reformatted and repaginated, but not otherwise altered. INTRODUCTION Very little information is available on the non Gilbert and Sullivan curtain raisers and other companion pieces used at the Savoy and by the D’Oyly Carte Opera Company on tour in their early years. Rollins and Witts give a brief list at the back of their compilation, and there are passing references to some of the pieces by Adair-Fitz- gerald and others. This pamphlet is intended to give some more data which may be of use and interest to the G&S fraternity. It is not intended to be the last word on the subject, but rather the first, and it is hoped that it will provoke further investigation. Wonderful Joy, Hope Again, Love and My Soul Alone Story: In Caravanistan beauty is measured in physical bulk, the heavier the better. The Sultan’s eldest daughter, Medorah, is thin, too thin to be an eligible bride. Chancellor Dadoolah suggests she is sent to America for the purposes of putting on weight – a suggestion that delights her because she has fallen in love with Vernon Grant, the man who accompanied the American ambassador and his wife to a reception in the Sultan’s palace. They meet again in Washington, and when she is summoned back to Caravanistan , Vernon secretly follows. Meantime, after various adventures, Vernon is captured and forced to work as a slave in the Sultan’s household. With no hope of marrying his underweight daughter to a prince, the Sultan condemns her to marry his new slave – and thus Medorah and Vernon are happily united. Notes: The original publicity declared that “Medorah” was jointly produced by Mr. Bernard J. Hishin and Sir Oswald Stoll, but within a week of opening, the show was subject to a legal dispute in the Court of Chancery, with Violet Melnotte claiming (and winning) half-ownership in the copyright of the English version of this Dutch original. -
Maurice Farkoa Was Born on 23 April 1864 at Smyrna, Turkey, the Son Of
Maurice Farkoa Maurice Farkoa was born on 23 April 1864 at Smyrna, Turkey, the son of a French father and an English mother, his maternal grandfather being Sir Robert Wilkinson, the local English consul. After varied succes in his youth, including singing at private functions (at which he has always welcome throughout the remainder of his life). Farkoa was selected by George Edwardes to fulfil the part of Carbonnet in An Artist’s Model (Daly’s, London, 2 February 1895 ; transferred to the Lyric, London, 28 May 1895), during the run of which his songs included ‘Le Fou Rire’ (which he first recorded for Berliner in Washington DC in 1896, and again in London in 1898, 1899 and 1905 ; see below) and Leslie Stuart’s ‘Triby Will Be True’. The latter was written in the wake of the craze after the publication of George Du Maurier’s successful novel of that name. Farkoa reprised the part when An Artist’s Model was produced at the Broadway Theatre, New York, on 23 December 1895, following by a short tour. ‘London, February 9 (1895) - … Owen Hall’s new play, An Artist’s Model, was produced on Saturday night last at Daly’s theater. For this production, as already cabled, George Edwardes gathered together the strongest cast ever seen in a similar production, including Marie tempest, Lottie Venne, Lettie Lind, Leonara Braham, the original Patience of Gilbert & Sullivan’s opera of that name ; Marie Studholme, Hayden Coffin, William Blakeley, Eric Lewis and others and the prettiest and most celebrated choristers in London… ‘A capital succes was earned by Maurice Farkoa, a well known society entertainer, but a newcomer on the London stage, who is under a two years’ engagement to Mr Edwardes. -

FOREWORD It must be rare, indeed, for anyone to be asked to provide a foreword to the songs written and sung by his grandfather, great-grandfather and great-great-grandfather. So I count it ‘a privilege and pleasure that I treasure beyond measure’ to do so. The Grossmiths’ delightful songs were written when Britain was a vital, flourishing nation and they reflect the merriment and vitality of their time. The humour and innocence they contain are hard to find today. Some years ago, during a Reception at the Palace of Holyrood House in Edinburgh, Lord Wetherill, a former Speaker of the House of Commons, who often used to have The Speaker's Eye played after one of his formal dinners at Speaker's House in London, asked me what had happened to the Grossmiths and their music? Happily, I was able to reassure him that they live on as their music shows and because his grandson, George Turner, aged over 90, is still composing music for his local church and his great, great grand daughter, Judith Butler, is CEO of British Youth Opera. Leon Berger and Selwyn Tillett are due not only our congratulations but also our thanks for their fine work in bringing the Grossmiths, possibly the lightest-hearted family in England’s history, back to life.
