As we go to press we hear that Peter Austin has just been notified that he has Art News! again been selected for London’s prestigious Royal Academy Summer Show. His painting "Grey Coast" was chosen from an initial 12,000 entries for this year's exhibition of the work of just over 1000 British and international artists. Peter has recently been exhibiting at the newly refurbished Claydon Gallery in the courtyard of Claydon House and with June now upon us he is putting the finishing touches to his open studio exhibition as part of Bucks Open Studios 2017 (10th to 25th June). His studio at 2 Bennetts Close will be open on Friday afternoons 16th and 23rd June from 2.00 pm until 5.00 pm, and on the Saturdays and Sundays during the fortnight from 11.00 am until 5.00 pm. There will be a lot of new work to be seen in Peter's studio, including paintings made following a recent visit to southern India and a series of paintings and drawings inspired by Chesil Beach and the Fleet lagoon in Dorset, Peter’s home county. For more information about his show and about Bucks Open Studios look out for directories in places such as libraries, the Old Goal and some local shops. You can also go to www.bucksopenstudios.org.uk and www.axisweb.org/p/peteraustin to find out more.

The Vicar writes Vicar: Revd. Ros Roberts 813162. Dear friends I am writing to you to let you know that with, Revd. Kay Peck, the part-time associate priest recently retiring, I am now the sole priest for our four villages. It has, therefore, become necessary to review and change times of the church services across the four benefice churches. These changes have had to be made due to several changes in, and growing needs of, the benefice which includes a new baptism policy. These are explained below. Changes to Church Service Times This will enable:  Revd Ros Roberts (Vicar) to have adequate time to get to services and have a chance to meet and get to know members of the congregation afterwards.  more time for pastoral care  easier planning if an emergency arises due to illness/accident and we need to find another priest or lay minister to take a service  a variety of services to encourage and develop mission in the benefice  more lay people to become involved in the mission and outreach of the church  a coordinated baptism/christening policy for the benefice. (The new times can be seen in the Newsletter, Padbury Pump and church noticeboards) Baptism/Christening Policy

A Christening/Baptism or Thanksgiving Service is held each month at a church in the Benefice after the 10.30 a.m. Sunday

Morning Service on the Second Sunday of the month. (Three times a year at your own local church)

We invite our families coming for Christening/Baptism/Thanksgiving to come to the Family Service, Café Church or appropriate service at the church where their service is to be held before their Baptism service takes place. This is so you can get to know them and they can get to know a few people and therefore be able to see familiar faces on their special day. They will also be asked to come to a service after the Christening/Baptism so that they may be welcomed by you into the church family and we can give them our support.

They will be invited to attend a short preparation session with other families. (approx. one and a half hours, including refreshments). This will explain all about what it means, what will happen, etc. Details will be given to them when they come to book. This will be held on a day and date arranged in advance of the baptism service.

The Changes come into effect from June. I would like to thank you for your understanding

Many thanks Village Voice in the Advertiser I write a piece every week for the Village Voice column in the Buckingham & Winslow Advertiser letting people know what's going on in Padbury. By and large I'm aware of what's happening but obviously I am not on everyone's wavelength so, please, tell me what you or your group, club or society are doing and I will put it in the Village Voice column. Padbury Women’s Institute News

Our members enjoy a craft evening from time to time and our April meeting was no exception - Trevi Smith and her sister - 2 delightful ladies, who enjoy making cards. After a demonstration we were let loose with all the decorations they brought with them, enough for any occasion. A most enjoyable evening and should you need a bespoke card Trevi can be reached in the Post Office in . In May we were entertained by Malcolm Nelson with Part 2 of his fascinating talk on being a Customs Officer at Heathrow Airport. The lengths some people go to smuggle in goods are rarely a match for the Customs officers who often can sense when someone has something to hide. It may be that this edition does not reach you until after 8th June when our meeting had to be cancelled because of the General Election. We will now have a meeting on July 13th in addition to our trip to Hampton Court on July 25th which is open to all. The price is £35 and includes coach travel from Padbury and entry to the Palace. To reserve a place, please contact Angela 01280 814398 or Sue 01296 711626. Before then on June 16th is our cocktail evening - also open to all when Bob Foster will give a demonstration of making cocktails which can be sampled by all, followed by supper. Licenced bar available. Doors open at 6.30 for 7.00 and tickets are £15 each. To reserve a place please call Angela 01280 814398 or Wendy 01280 822742.

Padbury Village Football Club

Though the 2016/17 season ended without any silverware for the Club there was plenty of promise with the development of the Youth section. The Club’s end of season presentations and events are scheduled for the coming weeks when individual Club awards will be announced. Off the pitch the Club enjoyed a Langston & Tasker sponsored Club day at MK Dons with over 50 players, coaches and supporters attending. The Club’s coaching team have continued to develop, gaining further training and FA certification to ensure the best resources are available for the teams. The Club would like to express their gratitude to Padbury Village Cricket Club for their generous donation to the Club as advertised in the April Parish Pump. The funds will be utilised particularly to facilitate the continued development of the Youth section and the Club hopes that more youngsters, boys and girls, from the village and local area will join. Over the summer the Club intends to host fun events to encourage new and broader membership, further details will be advertised in due course. With new kit and equipment required each season, new sponsors are sought for all sides. Sponsorship opportunities can vary from in kind contributions of time and/or resources, professional support based upon people’s backgrounds, to supplying discounted equipment, clothing or medical resources or funds towards required new kit or equipment. The Club tries to support such sponsorship through developing partnerships whether through invitations to Club events, advertising or other mutually beneficial activities. It would be fantastic if local businesses and village supporters could get further involved in supporting the Club, encouraging our ethos of a local community Club. Anybody interested in sponsorship opportunities, coaching or assisting with off the pitch activities is encouraged to contact the Chairman, Peter McHenry, [email protected], 07740930913. Please contact Jason [email protected] for further information on the PVFC Rovers or Mike – Mini Kickers, [email protected] .

Padbury Youth Club

Padbury We have had a fantastic few weeks at the club this half term thanks to the Buckingham University students that we now have joining us each week. We have had students from all over the world coming and telling stories, arranging games and bringing us food. The last week they taught dances from Africa, Armenia and Russia ending with the Macarena! Without the students it would have been quite a dull term as the rota was changed due to my being away and then my operation so we all thank them for brightening up our Friday nights. We did manage to do a Knickerbocker Glory evening which I didn’t Designed by Georgie Harvey aged 8 expect to be so popular. Actually they weren’t as keen on the fruit in the dessert as they were the ice cream and whipped cream – I was amazed nobody was sick! That was also the night of the storms but that didn’t deter the boys from being on the MUGA – they were soaked to the skin so I apologise to all parents who picked them up and had very wet car seats as a result. I am really pleased to report that our numbers are growing week on week. We are now averaging 18/20 each Friday which is fantastic news. See below for my contact details if you would like to join. We offer a free taster session before joining. Much of our equipment is old and falling apart so we would also be interested in purchasing any games/sports equipment or anything that you might think we could make use of. Particularly air hockey, swingball, bar football etc. Again please call me if you have anything like this available. In addition as we now have use of the MUGA each week we would like to sell, either as a pair or individually two large freestanding basketball nets. Contact me for more information or to have a look at these. Please see below the rota for next half term: Date Activity Date Activity June 9th Normal club night July 7th Cocktail night – non-alcoholic naturally! Padbury Table Tennis Club The longest continuing sports club in the village, and probably one of the least known, has just completed its most successful season since the formation of the club. The club was set up in 1980 which at the time was affiliated to the now defunct cricket club and the driving force behind this and who is still currently playing is Padbury stalwart Arthur Cox. Through the years there have been many different players but of the original players there is Arthur, John Osborn and David Lafford still playing. The club was originally set up where we played at the pavilion at the playing field not long after it was built, for the first couple of years it was just playing as a social event, but circa 1983 the team joined the now defunct Buckingham League where we played in that for about 20 years. With the influx of new players we then joined the Milton Keynes league around 1987 whilst continuing to play in the Buckingham league so using the pavilion a couple of nights a week for table tennis. As the club progressed and standards improved it was felt we had outgrown the pavilion and we moved to our current home around the year 2000 Padbury Village Hall. With the demise of the Buckingham league we then entered 2 teams, Padbury Night Owls and Padbury Otters who have been playing in the Milton Keynes League in different divisions ever since. The Night Owls team comprise of John Osborn, and Ian Warner with players playing up from the Otters to complete the trio on match nights, we play in Division 6 and won the division this year comfortably. The Otters team comprising Chris Hill, Arthur Cox, David Lafford, Ryan Lightfoot, Wesley Harrison and Paul Sargent play in Division 7 and had a good season finishing 3rd in the division and just missing out on promotion. At the end of each season the league hold a top 8 tournament comprising the top 8 players from each division in the averages, competing for the divisional trophy and pleased to say that Ian won Division 6 tournament and Ryan won Division 7 tournament which is a good achievement. Through the second half of the season the league run the knockout handicap cup and pleased to report the team of John, Ian, Arthur and Chris, who played once, won the cup the first time ever a Padbury team have won that with the star member of the team, Arthur Cox winning it for the first time in his long playing time. So if you drive past the village hall on a Monday night from September to March after 7pm and the lights are on there is every chance that there will be a league table tennis match taking place. We have four new allotmenteers this year and they have all made excellent and enthusiastic progress in a very short time. St. Mary’s Church Fayre is taking place on Saturday 17th June. If anyone has any fruit, herbs or vegetables that could be sold on the produce stall, they would be appreciated. Please see what you can donate and take to Fred Morris on Friday afternoon or Saturday morning. As usual, I would remind plot holders to be considerate when burning rubbish and to remember to close the gate when driving off the site. I wish you a happy, blight free, growing season. PFA Fun Quiz and Pizza Night A huge thank you to everyone who came to the PFA fun quiz and pizza night on Saturday 20 May. It is fair to say immense fun was had by all, with questions ranging from Disney to politics and bonus rounds including origami and charades. Over 50 people attended and £820 was raised. A special thank you goes to Amit and his team at Dominos Pizza, Buckingham who donated 14 large pizzas to us, to keep all our quizzers going.

Do you need a lift? Do you need help with transport for hospital or any other appointments, or perhaps collecting shopping or prescriptions? If so, we know many people in the village who are happy and willing to help, so please contact initially either John or Sue Wrigley on 01280 814199 and although they may not necessarily be able to help you themselves, they should know a man or woman who can!"

crafty chatter, knit & natter, wood & glue!

Thursday 15th June 7.30pm St Mary’s Church. A convivial evening to share crafts and crafty ideas and have a chat. Tea, coffee and nibbles provided but feel free to bring you own wine or beer. All welcome. (this is not a women’s only group). Or just come for a chatter.

We have two new members of staff in the Office. They are Mrs Donna Dawkes who is our new administrator and Mrs Johnson, our new bursar. Welcome to our community! At the end of last term, “Padbury’s Got Talent”, organised by the School Council, showed just how much we have. There were thirty-five acts and over fifty pupils took part. They gave us dance acts, comedy skits, gymnastics, poetry recitals, instrumentals and singing. They raised £137 for the ‘Hula’ Animal Charity. The PFA have been raising money during the Spring term with Viva Las Vegas, the pre-school’s coffee morning, the Easter cake sale and a very well supported raffle which has raised £1900, an incredible amount. Well done to all! The money they raise for us and the Pre-School is much needed and very welcome; this year we are spending it on additional outdoor equipment for the children. Celebration Assemblies for parents have started again and they are well attended thanks to the increased capacity we have with our lovely new Hall. The school clubs are up and running and it is amazing what a range of choice the children have in front of them. They can do board games, music, multi-skills, yoga and spy-kids and there is also the All-Board Club (wrap around care). There have been a number of events taking place this half-term. Beech Class went to the British Transport Museum in April, and this month Oak Class are going to Rectory Farm. Both Oak and Sycamore Class is taking part in another sporting tournament with other local schools and at the end of May all the Key Stage 2 children will be able to sleep under the stars in a Tented Camp. How much sleep will actually take place is anyone’s guess! After Half-term we are looking forward to our annual Sports Day and family picnic, Sycamore’s Class Performance and the School Fair organised by the PFA. Fingers crossed for continuing good weather. We hope that everyone has a wonderful summer and is raring to go when School re-opens on the 6th of September! Karen Duckworth Head teacher PAGE 18 THE PADBURY PARISH PUMP Volume 17 Issue 3

Dog Walking around the village Everybody has a right to walk their dogs on public footpaths in the village, but they must be kept on a lead when in the vicinity of other dogs. It can be very intimidating to owners with nervous dogs when they are approached by out of control dogs.
