No place like home: Australian art history and contemporary art at the start of the 1970s Heather Barker and Charles Green This‖essay‖considers‖an‖emergent‖Australian‖art‖history’s‖dramatically‖changing‖ impact on art criticism in the late 1960s and, in turn, as a key part of a wider perspective on the intersection of contemporary art and art history in Australia from the early 1960s into the 1980s. The change in Australian art history was evident in the development of modes of professional competence modelled on formalism and a tendentious neo-Marxism in transition towards an affectless postmodernism, already strands in international art history as a discipline. So, during the period, seminal Australian art historian Bernard Smith's battle against what he saw as American cultural imperialism was well and truly lost. Young art historians writing on contemporary art from the late 1960s on, including art historians Patrick McCaughey and Terry Smith, were convinced that the centre of world art was now New York. This idea of world art did not, however, diminish the Australian preoccupation with nation, national identity and the position—and therefore the category—of Australian art.‖Rather,‖it‖was‖to‖result‖in‖key‖writings,‖from‖Terry‖Smith’s‖articles‖to‖Paul‖ Taylor’s‖postmodern‖polemics‖in‖Art and Text, all of which above all sought to locate Australian art in relation to international (which largely remained American) art. Heather Barker and Charles Green, Flight from the Object: Donald Brook, Inhibodress and the Emergence of Post-Studio Art in Early 1970s Sydney HEATHER BARKER AND CHARLES GREEN Flight from the Object: Donald Brook, Inhibodress and the Emergence of Post-Studio Art in Early 1970s Sydney ABSTRACT In the early 1970s, within the small art worlds of Melbourne and Sydney, the contributions of art theorist Donald Brook were as crucial to the innovation of Conceptual art as the art itself. He was an important, prescient but ultimately lonely participant in these developments, as were artists Peter Kennedy and Mike Parr, and alternative Sydney galleries Inhibodress and the University of Sydney workshop, Tin Sheds. Brook considered that national identity was irrelevant in art; was resolutely concerned with art but not at all concerned with “Australian art”. He was opposed to a methodology that excluded everything that did not fit into a preconceived and often teleological system, insisting that if a theory could not account for post-object art then the theory was flawed and not the art. While conceding that there may have been a basis for claims that post- object art was ‘simply not art’, he criticised conservatives for resisting post-object art, insisting that the issue was still to be argued. Introduction This essay examines the turn away from defensive nationalism to internationalist autobiography in the art and theories of contemporary art during the early 1970s. It is paradoxical that this turn occurred in the process of young artists’ disillusionment with an art movement that was the most truly globalised and the least tainted by nationalism or provincialism – Conceptual art. -

ART GALLERY OF NEW SOUTH WALES ARCHIVE BALNAVES FOUNDATION AUSTRALIAN SCULPTURE ARCHIVE PROJECT Interview with Donald Brook 23 February 2011 This is an edited transcript of an interview with Donald Brook, and his wife Phyllis Brook, on 23 February 2011 in Adelaide, South Australia, by Deborah Edwards, senior curator of Australian art at the Art Gallery of New South Wales, for the Balnaves Foundation Australian Sculpture Archive Project. The project focuses on significant Australian sculptors and sculptural practice. It was developed with a grant from the Balnaves Foundation in 2010, which supported the recording and transcription of interviews with artists and other figures in Australian art. About Donald Brook Donald Brook (1927–2018) was an art theorist and writer. He was also a practising sculptor and an art critic before moving into academia. Brook played a significant role in the development of conceptual art in Australia and helped found the Tin Sheds workshop at the University of Sydney and the Experimental Art Foundation in Adelaide. This is an edited transcript of a recorded interview. Chapter Four The Heroic Years of Mildura Part 1: 1970 – 1974 To change the nature of art one must first change its institutions.295 Introduction The previous two chapters identified the necessary preconditions for the development of an autonomous field of artistic production in Australia. Specifically, with regard to sculpture in Australia, the 1967 Mildura Sculpture Prize represented a transition period in which new selection criteria with preferences for ‘new art’ emerged, predicated on the use of industrial materials and prefabricated techniques, and the selection of younger artists, many of whom were aligned to the new and expanding education sector. Definitions of ‘professional’ became contested; and the issue of professional development and tests to establish professional status became increasingly important to representative membership organisations such as AGAA (Art Galleries Association of Australia) and ASEA (Australian Society of Education through Art). This chapter covers two key events: the Mildura Sculpture Triennial of 1970 and Sculpturscape 1973. The beginning of the new decade at Mildura heralded the event’s official format change from prize to invitational triennials. In fact, both Mildura triennial events became significant litmus tests for emerging policy support for experimental visual art within the federal government’s restructured Australian Council for the Arts. Volume 08 Experimental Arts Experimental Art Donald Brook Abstract: Attention is drawn to the fact that the inscription “art” is a homonym. Primarily, it names the category of memetic innovation, illustrations of which are encountered in every cultural domain. Thus, art may be—but is not necessarily—encountered in the artworld, where a different word with the same spelling is used to name the class of artefacts recognised as works of art. The expression “memetic innovation” is explained in terms of a theory of cultural evolution, set out in a way that precisely paral- lels the Darwinian account of biological evolution. As a consequence, the expression “experimental art” is shown to be tautological. That is to say, experimental art is not a sort of art but the only sort of art. Because art is always unexpectedly encountered in works of art (as it is in artefacts of every other sort) it follows that such encounters are not and cannot be predictably contrived by an artist. Only familiar memes can be purposefully deployed. Some implications of these fundamental points are briefly sketched; notably the attraction toward science and technology that has been felt by many ambitious artists. My account of art, evolution and cultural history has already appeared in print in several places.1 It is summarized here in order to distinguish the lucid tautology “experimental art” from the barely intelligible locutions “works of experimental art” and “experimental works of art”. NIEA EXPERIMENTAL ARTS CONFERENCE 2011 MAIN CONFERENCE ABSTRACTS & BIOGRAPHIES DAY ONE: FRIDAY 19 AUGUST PLENARY DONALD BROOK Experimental Art I argue in this paper that the word ‘art’ is a homonym. Primarily, it names the category of memetic innovation, illustrations of which are encountered in every cultural domain. Thus, art may be—but is not necessarily—encountered in the artworld, where the makers of works of art use a different word (with the same spelling) to name a class of artefacts. I explain memetic innovation and the potency of variant memes in terms of a theory of cultural evolution that precisely parallels the Darwinian account of biological evolution. BIOGRAPHY Donald Brook is Emeritus Professor of Visual Arts at Flinders University. His academic career overlaps his related careers as a practicing sculptor and as an art critic. He is a former art critic of The Sydney Morning Herald and Nation Review, and was a founder of the Tin Sheds Workshop in Sydney and the Experimental Art Foundation in Adelaide.
