2.4.6 Population – Stoke-on-Trent

In 2016 Stoke-on-Trent had an estimated population of 253,226 people. Table 2.4.5 details the age profile of this population.

 One in four residents is aged under 20 (25%)  Nearly three fifths of residents are aged between 20 and 64 (58%)  One in six residents is aged 65 or over (17%)

The ONS population projections suggest that the population of Stoke-on-Trent will continue to grow over the next twenty years, increasing by an estimated 5.4% to 267,200 by 2037.

2.4.7 Population Newcastle-under-Lyme

The population in 2015 was 127,000. The estimated population for 2020 is 129,000.

2.4.8 Population Staffordshire Moorlands

In the 2011 census the population of Staffordshire Moorlands was 97,106 and is made up of approximately 51% females and 49% males. The average age of people in Staffordshire Moorlands is 43, while the median age is higher at 45. 95.9% of people living in Staffordshire Moorlands were born in England. Other top answers for country of birth were 0.8% , 0.8% Scotland, 0.2% Northern Ireland, 0.2% Ireland, 0.1% India, 0.1% South Africa, 0.1% United States, 0.1% Australia.

How long, on average, people can expect to live using estimates of the population and the number of deaths.

2.4.9 Life expectancy in Stoke-on-Trent

Life expectancy at birth (average age) in Stoke-on-Trent is 76.4 years for males and 81.0 years for females.

Life expectancy has improved over the last ten years but, for both genders, remains below the national averages of 79.5 years for men and 83.1 years for women. In fact, Stoke-on-Trent is about ten years behind the national average: current life expectancy in Stoke-on-Trent is comparable to life expectancy in England ten years ago.

Although the long-term trend is upwards, there was no improvement in life expectancy at birth for males between 2009-11 and 2013-15.

Life expectancy is profoundly affected by socio-economic conditions. Nationally the difference in life expectancy between the 10% least deprived and the 10% most deprived areas is 9.2 years for males and 7.1 years for females. This difference is almost exactly mirrored within Stoke-on-Trent itself. Life expectancy at birth is far higher for those living in the most affluent areas compared to those living in the most deprived areas: a difference of 9.3 years for males and 7.1 years for females.

2.4.10 Life expectancy in North Staffordshire

Life expectancy is 8.9 years lower for men and 9.6 years lower for women in the most deprived areas of Newcastle-under-Lyme than in the least deprived areas.
