The following work consists of the design and development of Oceans of Reflection,​ a​ video game based on introspective and alterbiographical narratives that allows the player to approach their own being through mechanics and environment. More specifically, the aim is to enable the player to construct the narrative jointly with us, the developers, moving away from traditional narratives and adapting the experience for each of the users in such a way that it is completely personalized. The video game could be classified in the First Person Exploration and Puzzle Game genre and it will be developed in Unity 3D for PC using, inter alia, technologies such as Unity Shader Graph and voice recognition.

Although the wilderness was meant to be a safe refuge for when Henry’s life began to unravel, a conspired mystery from years ago begins rapidly and dramatically unfolding, causing both Henry and you to question the events that have happened and make dramatic interpersonal choices. The game places a heavy emphasis on dialogue choices and exploration. Your main, and for a long time, only point of contact with the outside world is Delilah, your supervisor, who is available at all times through a small, handheld radio. Equipt with a compass and map, Firewatch weaves diegetic mechanics, vibrant dialogue choices, and an intriguing, beautiful environment to create a complex, visceral experience of seduction, fear, and escape, and take an intimate look at the human psyche. Characters ● Henry - The main protagonist of Firewatch, Henry is a burly man in his early 40’s ​ from Boulder, Colorado. When his marriage becomes dysfunctional after his wife Julia begins developing early-onset dementia, he takes a job as a fire lookout in the wilderness of the Two Forks Lookout to escape his problems. Henry’s personality is 1 largely defined by the player’s dialogue choices- he can be considerate, shy, crass, sarcastic, and capable of navigating serious conversations.

Campo Santo has people in four cities now: San Francisco, Vancouver, London and Winchester, and the pattern that forms when you plot those disparate locations on a map is probably something to keep !an eye on, for sure. Jake Rodkin, Campo Santo’s co-founder, told me that much of the team’s recent focus has been on putting together a trailer for its first game, Firewatch. When the trailer is shown at the end of August, it’ll be the most that the company has revealed of the game !to date. “I am equal parts excited and anxious,” Mr Rodkin said to me.

Sean Vanaman and Jake Rodkin founded Campo Santo on October 14, 2013 in San Francisco. On that date the Sun was in Libra, and Venus in Sagittarius, in the eastern section of the sky. That part about the Sun isn’t recorded in the California Secretary of State’s official register, so I did what any normal reporter would do and paid a professional astrologer for that information. Firewatch is Campo Santo’s first title, a mystery about a Wyoming fire lookout named Henry and his supervisor Delilah. It will be released “sometime this summer,” according to Vanaman, “but we don’t have a particular date locked down yet.” Whenever it happens, this is the year we will learn whether Firewatch’s success is enough to justify Campo Santo’s ten-person development team; the financial investment of the Portland software company Panic; the insane luxury of a regular Quarterly Review that consults astrologers; and the decision of everyone who left a job for their belief in this game and this company. During the Game Developers Conference earlier this month, Campo Santo handed Firewatch over to the general public—specifically, about 20 playable minutes of the early game, polished to the level envisioned for the final product.

    Making the World of Firewatch Jane Ng Lead Artist, Campo Santo Hello everyone, thank you for coming to this session! My name is Jane Ng and I’m the lead artist at Campo Santo. Today we will be talking about Making the World of Firewatch! We at Campo Santo spent the last 2 years making this game, and we knew from the beginning that it was kind of a crazy idea. We knew that it was going to be tough, workflow wise, for a team of over 10 people to make any open-world-ish game in Unity. Let alone one that features a very stylized forest, with tons of trees. Good luck with that! Size of player That is supposed to be THIS big when we can only realistically probably only draw this much of the game at full res any given time. Now I know all this is crazy ambitious because I have been doing environment art professionally for over 13 years. I worked on Godfather, which was EA’s first open world game. That team had 200+ ppl and a custom engine. When I joined Double Fine Productions, I also worked on yet another open world title, Brutal Legend, this time with only about 60 people but also a custom engine. So I knew when I joined Campo Santo in the fall of 2013 to make Firewatch. I was signing up for a serious challenge. In game screenshots taken by players.
